Test Drive: 2011 MINI Countryman S All4

for anyone who thought the mini wasn’t a
winter car think again hi I’m Miranda
light stone with watchmojo.com and today
we’re checking out minis brand new
countryman S all4
well the country might be all new for
many of the Interior definitely isn’t
the moment you get inside this
countryman you’ll instantly recognize
the look it has the retro round gauges
as the seats that look very much like
the Cooper and the Clubman basically
this is a mini just a lot bigger now of
course the allure of the countryman is
the fact that it has four doors as two
captain seats in the back so you can
only fit two adults there’s not a third
seat in the back what you do get is this
very cool rail feature but you can
attach cupholders sunglasses cases and
probably other accessories and then you
will offer and you can move them around
to your leisure there’s also the mood
lighting that tracks through that which
is super cool you can change it to all
different colors depending on your mood
for the day you get the mini connected
you can pick up your iPod your Bluetooth
phone it has everything right here on
the screen in the middle and the climate
control and window buttons have pretty
much stayed the same on the country room
you just get two additional window
buttons here for the rear doors which
you never have to worry about before and
the sport and fog light buttons have
also been moved to the middle whereas
before they’re by the shift knob so in
essence you’re in a mini however where
it does differ is in the exterior look
now for anybody who’s a die-hard mini
cooper fan you may have a problem with
the countryman it does look different
now why because it has four doors it’s
all-wheel drive it sits higher it has
more Headroom it’s a beefier vehicle so
for anybody who complains it doesn’t
look like a Cooper well it’s not a
Cooper it’s a countryman
anybody driving a regular mini may be a
bit intimidated by today’s weather
it’s slushy it’s sloppy it’s snowy and
it’s below zero which means everything
is freezing but if you’ve got a mini
countryman like we do this week then I
say this is the perfect day to play this
new Mini is equipped with all four
all-wheel-drive
basically means is the front wheel drive
bias system until it feels that it needs
to send power to the back at which point
it’ll take half of the torque and throw
it back there so that you even out and
you stick to the road and you can handle
any surface it’s a really good system
actually after testing it out today I
realized that well it does sport a bit
of understeer meaning you’ll lose
traction on the front when it realizes
the front of losing traction and it
sends power to the back you really do
get the grip and it snaps you back and
you get a proper all-wheel drive vehicle
now in extreme cases it’ll send a
hundred percent of the torque to the
rear wheels that doesn’t happen very
often but if you find yourself in that
kind of situation and it’s amazing that
the mini can actually do that now
because this is the countryman S it’s
cooked with the same engine that’s in
the Cooper S which is a 1.6 litre
4-cylinder that pushes at about 180
horsepower and 177 pounds foot of torque
not a great deal of power because it is
a smaller vehicle you do still feel it
unfortunately because the countryman is
larger than the Cooper which of course
it has to be because it has all-wheel
drive and it has four doors it does feel
a bit sluggish to me it still drives
like a mini that’s what they branded us
and that’s actually what it does it
still handles corners very well has a
little bit of roll because of the
extended ride height and yet it still
has room for four full-size adults which
is unheard of and any other mini and you
have a larger trunk so really what more
could you ask for
this one we thought mini couldn’t get
any cooler the countryman hit the road
equipped with all-wheel drive and four
seats that actually fit for adults the
countryman really does answer what the
Cooper and Clubman couldn’t
