like an iPhone on wheels the new Lincoln
is all about technology hi I’m Randall
life stone with watchmojo.com and today
we’re getting tech-savvy and
touchy-feely with a brand-new 2011
lincoln MKX the lincoln MKX was first
introduced in 2007 it since then it’s
seen a lot of changes most notably in
the interior is the upgraded technology
Lincoln’s and Ford’s and now equipped
with what’s called my Ford touch or my
lincoln touch basically what that is is
a fully touchscreen touch sensitive
system this whole middle console here is
all touch buttons and a touchscreen
there are no more knobs there’s nothing
to determine the something depressed Oh
looks very cool it all sounds very cool
effect it all sounds very iPhone –is–
when you put it in a car you realize
kind of how impractical it is because
the buttons don’t really stick out you
really have to pay attention to where
you’re putting your finger which means
taking your eyes off the road if I want
a seat on a radio I’ve got to make sure
that I was pressing the right side I’ve
got to make sure I’m giving the right
amount of pressure if I want to change
the climate I have to go up by 0.5
degree increments by brushing my finger
lightly against a button that I may or
may not know where it is because I’m
trying to drive same goes for the
on-board computer system it’s all very
fancy and very huge and there’s a hell
of a lot of information on this screen
right here but to access anything you
have to go through folders and again
that means placing your finger on the
right place on the screen and if you’re
driving that becomes very difficult oh
god I want to go to information I want
to see what traffic is going on add to
this system the fact that you have to
fork point inch LCD screens on either
side of your speedometer and you have
even more information blasting at you
from this car on the left-hand side of
the dash the vehicle information is
slowed so something’s wrong with the
cars your oil levels are low your tire
pressure is off or if the sensor is
blocked or not working correctly it’ll
tell you take for example one day I was
on the highway my front crash warning
system sensor was blocked the car was
dirty so a message popped up to tell me
that said sensor was blocked as I was
trying to read that message
was coming very close to the car in
front of me the warning wasn’t there I
nearly rear-ended the person then to
clear the message I had to press ok but
I needed to make sure that I passed the
right okay because there’s too I pressed
the wrong okay activating radio which
then made me have to turn down the
volume on these fancy little plastic
things here that look like decoration
that aren’t really sliding my finger
slowly along it to turn it down and in
fact I didn’t actually turn it down I
turned it up
deafening myself and really just making
the whole experience horrible what it
really comes down to as a sensory
overload there’s too much going on in
this car driving a lincoln MKX is okay
it’s not bad but it’s not terribly good
either it’s just kind of ho-hum it has a
new engine with 3.7 liter v6 and that
pushes out just over 300 horsepower and
about 280 pound-feet of torque but for a
vehicle this size you don’t really feel
that power now because it’s the Lincoln
it’s supposed to be a luxurious kind of
plush and sophisticated and it is it’s a
nice car to drive it’s not entirely
sporty but then it’s not meant to be now
I know I was pretty negative before
about this middle console technology bit
going on here but an actual fact that my
Lincoln touch system that’s
voice-activated is really ingenious it
has over 10,000 voice commands so you
never really have to touch the buttons
down here if you’re clever enough to
remember all the voice commands please
say a command
radio Radio say a frequency or preset
97.7 tuning to FM 97.7 standard on the
Lincoln MKX is a remote starter so it’s
on the key you click the lock once and
then start twice and the car will start
for you it’s great for cold climates
like the one we live it perfect for the
winters isn’t perfect for the winters
and once again this middle console at
minus 20 degrees not really in the mood
to take my gloves off and they can work
properly so high time that I pull out
the book and learn the 10
in command so I can use a
voice-activated system instead
I fully understand Ford’s need to pack
the slick and full of technological
tidbits but at the same time I think
they’ve kind of done this card
disservice the Lincoln’s made to be
driven it’s meant to be luxurious and
yes it’s meant to be a step up from the
fork but somehow they’ve made it a
little bit worse and for the price I
can’t see anybody really wanting one of
these over the Ford Edge
