Terry Fox: A Single Dream, A World Of Hope

every year people around the world take
part in the Terry Fox Run hi I’m
Veronica watchmojo.com and today we’re
learning more about this Canadian legacy
Terry Fox was a university student when
he was diagnosed with bone cancer and
after they amputated his leg he did some
research and he found that there wasn’t
enough money being spent on cancer
research in Canada so he said well I’m
gonna change that and so for a year and
a half he ran every day he ran over five
thousand kilometers and training just to
get ready for the marathon a halt on
April 12 1980 he dipped his artificial
leg in the Atlantic Ocean in st. John’s
Newfoundland and he started the marathon
I hope he ran a marathon every day for
143 days until the cancer actually
returned and he couldn’t run anymore and
so after that Terry Fox passed away from
cancer but before he passed away his
friends made a promise to him they said
Terry once a year we’re gonna hold the
Terry Fox run to raise money for a cure
for cancer and we’re gonna do this every
single year until we’ve cured every
cancer on the planet and that promise
actually it really touched Terry Fox
because he knew that no matter what
happened to him even if he passed away
but he started would only end with one
thing and that’s a cure for cancer what
would a typical day be like at a Terry
boxer well I mean a typical days is
people go out to the Terry Fox Run and
they check in and they bring their
donations you know some people donate
just on-site out of their pocket a lot
of people raise money with pledges and
then they they do whatever distance they
want
now most Terry Fox runs our 5k 10k but
you could even walk one meter that’s a
Terry Fox Run you don’t have to run you
could walk it the first Terry Fox turn
in 1981 raised three point five million
dollars what kind of money I was seeing
being raised today well last year the
Terry Fox foundation raised twenty five
million dollars around the world for
cancer research so we’ve come a long way
since those days since the very first
Terry Fox run over four hundred million
dollars
in Raceland Terry’s name and you know
the Terry Fox Run it’s not just in
Canada it’s around the world this year
there’s over 30 countries holding the
Terry Fox Run Terry knew that cancer had
no borders and neither does Terry Fox
Run
