Secrets For A Healthy Lifestyle: Hydration

fitness guru and Nick Robinson is
sharing her secrets to a healthy
lifestyle hi I’m Veronica watchmojo.com
and today we’re taking a look at the
second step hydration our first tip was
about nutrition and you really can’t
optimize your nutrition which we talked
about or your exercise if you’re not
hydrating correctly so our second most
important thing to look at when getting
healthy is your hydration isn’t
hydration something that should come
naturally to us well not really because
thirst is actually the last symptom of
dehydration and all the symptoms of
dehydration which a lot of people can
recognize our stress hunger food
cravings headaches insomnia crankiness
thirst is the last one by the time
you’re thirsty you’re extremely
dehydrated now there are many liquids
that you can drink does this can as a
form of hydration no we’re the only
animal on the planet that drinks
anything but water from a physiological
standpoint drinking is designed to clean
your body so you wouldn’t use coffee to
do that it also serves to regulate your
body temperature which you do when you
sweat to bring your body temperature
down when you’re exercising so you would
want to do that with some diet soda for
example you want to do that with water
and also helps optimize all of your
organ functions and your brain function
and you wouldn’t want to do that with
beer alcohol you want to do that with
water now there are people who after the
gym take their protein shake to go is
that bad
when you think about it you eat your
nutrition and you drink water for
hydration you shouldn’t be drinking
anything that you’re counting of as
nutrition you shouldn’t be drinking your
food you should be drinking water in
fact I would tell people that are
grabbing that protein shake that you’re
better off having a handful of almonds
and a bottle of water it’s more
delicious anyway to chew your food and
it’s better for your digestion and the
water will feel so good once you’ve
really had a good workout how much water
should someone drink daily on a general
basis for the average person 2 liters a
day I know it sounds like a lot but when
I ask people what they are drinking most
them will tell me they
start off the day with a large cup of
coffee and then they might have a juice
and then they’ll have a shake and then
they’ll have soda and then they’ll have
two three glasses of wine with dinner
when you think about it you’re probably
consuming about two liters of fluids in
your day without actually hydrating your
body and some of the fluids are drinking
could actually be dehydrating you so if
you replace some of those things with a
simple 500 milliliter bottle of water
have one in the morning have one around
your lunchtime I have one in the
afternoon and then one sometimes in the
evening so that will give you two liters
of water during your day and that should
be optimal if you’re exercising
vigorously you actually will lose twice
this amount of water in one hour of
vigorous exercise what about those who
like to start their day off with a big
glass of orange juice in theory it seems
like that would be a really healthy
choice except that if you ever press
your own orange juice you’d realize that
to make a full glass of orange juice
you’d be pressing about 12 oranges if I
ever asked you to eat 12 oranges for
breakfast you’d think I was nuts so
you’re better off skipping the orange
juice having a full orange and a glass
of water you’ll be much more satisfied
from eating the orange anyway and your
vitamin C will be nice and fresh and not
oxidized and lose its value like it
would be in a glass of juice do you want
to leave us with any final thoughts
concerning hydration most people don’t
even realize that they’re dehydrated but
if you’re cranky you’re tired you’re
stressed don’t reach for something to
eat
start by reaching for some water
rehydrate take a deep breath you should
be feeling better a lot sooner thank you
very much thanks Veronica
