Science: Exercise for the Brain

curiosity is to science what a spark is
to a flame hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today that
curiosity is piqued by dr. Joe schwarcz
and his book brain fuel well the title
actually has a double meaning obviously
the best fuel for our brain is
information we have to make decisions
from warning tonight about all kinds of
things you need sound information and
try to provide that but there’s another
aspect to this and that is as we age our
brain ages too unfortunately and it
becomes less adept at handling
information and eventually too many
people end up with the mantilla of
various kinds but we have a lot of
research indicating that if you exercise
your brain you’re less likely to develop
these kind of problems so I hope that by
providing some exercise for the brain we
can indeed allow our brain to work for a
longer time
in this book I’ve tried to address some
aspects of science that are practical
some are just interesting historical bit
some are just curiosities but the
overall theme is to give people an idea
of how science works what scientific
methodology is what scientists are
interested in and perhaps a few
surprising things we say well I didn’t
know that you know this had a scientific
connection
I may pose a question like why are
scientists interested in Harlequin bugs
there’s a reason for asking a question
like that Harlequin bugs are very
interesting little insects that live
mostly on cruciferous vegetables meaning
broccoli cauliflower kale Brussels
sprouts etc and these are kind of
vegetables that researchers are really
interested in because they have
compounds in them that have anti-cancer
properties well it turns out that these
little insects when they dine on these
vegetables concentrate those compounds
in their bodies so of course researchers
are interested to see whether or not
they may actually provide an anti-cancer
nutrient intake so we have a question
that sounds strange but then it leads us
into an answer that reveals something
surprising about the world it’s also
very satisfying when you can take
people’s fears and put them into
perspective I think a certain amount of
comfort that can be derived from
providing sound information as you know
I try to do braids fuel and other venues
as well
