[Music]
from hungry outsiders to the new
mainstream to the reluctant voice of a
reluctant generation today we’re talking
about a band that seemingly came from
nowhere it was actually Aberdeen
Washington State to release a gold
multi-platinum and eventually diamond
album unleash a musical revolution and
completely reshaped the course and sound
of popular music that followed for at
least a decade
this is WatchMojo as the story in the
songs I’m your curator Rebecca Brayton
and I’m going to take you on the musical
journey of Nirvana
[Music]
now before we board this arrow Zeppelin
I want you to know that we love hearing
from you so if a Cobain story or a
Nirvana lyric or memory or even a
factoid pops into your head don’t think
you’re dumb maybe you’re just happy and

that’s enough of verse chorus verse
here’s part one the story I would like
to think that we there’s some there’s
some purity in us here naive purposely
by either alternative rock band Nirvana
formed in Aberdeen Washington in 1987
the original lineup consisted of Kurt
Cobain on vocals and guitar along with
Chris Noah Selleck on bass in the early
days the pair went through a number of
different drummers but initially weren’t
in 1988 the Seattle independent record
label Sub Pop released Nirvana’s first
single love buzz their debut album
bleach would follow the next year though
the critically acclaimed record did not
sell well at first it did get much
exposure on college radio following the
release of the Blu EP and several tour
dates that included shows with Sonic
Youth Nirvana started recording their
sophomore album in the midst of the
sessions they found drummer Dave Grohl
and in 1990 signed with major label
David Geffen company otherwise known as
DGC records Kurt Cobain Krist Novoselic
and Dave Grohl are the names you think
of when you think of Nirvana but the
lineup actually included many
lesser-known drummers like Dale Crowe
ver of The Melvins and additional
guitarists like Pat smear and Jason
their second studio effort 1991’s
nevermind was an unexpected success this
was due to the ever-increasing
popularity of the hit single smells like
teen spirit and its accompanying music
video the favorably reviewed nevermind
would eventually be credited with
bringing grunge and alternative rock to
the mainstream commenter Bret red says I
love this band I still am puzzled by
Kurt’s melody and lyrics how did he do
it
these guys are just too good hearing
their music it’s such a young age set
the standard too high
[Music]
[Applause]
by 1992 Nirvana’s members were growing
increasingly uncomfortable with their
success rumors began to spread that Kurt
Cobain along with his wife Courtney Love
were heavy heroin users and this was
affecting his health
since progress on a follow-up album was
slow the outtake compilation incest
aside was released instead
[Music]
when the nevermind money came in Kurtz
celebrated by buying guitars including a
mid-60s fender electric 12 which he
decided to store in his bathtub to fool
would-be burglars the guitar was later
damaged when sewage backed up into the
tub the trio did not support never mind
with a full tour though they did make
several memorable performances for
instance Nirvana headlined England’s
Reading Festival with a gig that was
deemed one of the best of their career
they also opened the MTV Video Music
Awards with the performance that ended
in a destruction of their instruments
which was something for which the band
was becoming famous
they also trashed the stage after
playing territorial pissing on a
television show Saturday Night Live
their third album in utero came out in
despite the fact that it contrasted
sharply from the Polish never mind the
record was highly praised and debuted on
[Music]
[Applause]
one of Cobain’s last televised
performances was captured on the TV
program MTV Unplugged Nirvana played an
acoustic set of songs that would later
be released as MTV Unplugged
in New York the Grammy award-winning
album would be Nirvana’s first release
after the death of Cobain and would once
again be a number-one record for the
group
although MTV Unplugged was one of their
most well known performances Cobain
wasn’t actually unplugged aside from his
usual effects pedals
he played through an amp which was
disguised as a stage monitor and buried
[Music]
all become
the early months of 1994 were fraught
with mounting psychological problems for
Cobain and several suicide attempts that
caused the cancellation of numerous tour
dates following an escape from rehab the
singer was found dead on April 8 1994 of
a shotgun blast the death was ruled a
suicide though conspiracy theorists
maintain otherwise commenters saintly mo
says what upstairs to my 13 year old
son’s bedroom the other day he had his
headphones on playing minecraft singing
of the top of his voice
territorial pissing job done a few weeks
after MTV Unplugged in New York’s
release the video album live tonight
sold out came out
[Music]
two years later the live album from the
muddy banks of the whish qey debuted
once again number one on the Billboard
charts in 2002 the compilation Nirvana
was released after a legal dispute
between Krist Novoselic Dave Grohl and
the album entered at number three on the
Billboard album chart it included the
song you know you’re right which had
since then other posthumous releases
have seen the light of day such as the
2004 box set with the lights out the
2005 compilation sliver the best of the
box and the 2010 greatest hits
collection icon the band’s two surviving
members continued on with musical
endeavors outside of Nirvana after
Cobain’s death
Novoselic played in bands such as sweet
75 and eyes adrift and while Grohl has
been involved in several music projects
he is most well known for being the
creative force behind the Grammy winning
band Foo Fighters
[Applause]
by incorporating vast influences in
their music
Nirvana helped to expose their fans to
artists they may never have listened to
in turn
Nirvana’s original and emotional sound
along with their intense live shows gave
a voice to a generation that wanted to
be heard and subsequently changed the
face of rock music I think the future
looks good for good bands with integrity
to be exposed to at least have the
it’s always a deeply difficult and hard
to accept reality when a celebrity a
figure we feel we know and who speaks
directly to us leaves us far too soon
[Music]
and you have to wonder what he could
have created had Kirk been able to find
that happiness he felt he was missing
but as it is he left us with a host of
well-crafted tracks and multiple classic
albums so with that here’s part 2 the
songs
[Music]
number ten rape me
[Music]
with a title like that is it any wonder
in utero second single raised a few
eyebrows though Nirvana was no stranger
to controversy rape me was still a
daring choice following the public’s
reaction to heart-shaped boxes strange
music video
written by Kurt Cobain on an acoustic
guitar the four and a half minute grunge
numbers still managed to chart in Europe
[Music]
thanks to its simple but memorable rift
Cobain’s and passion vocals and a
powerful climax
[Applause]
[Music]
if we ignore the secret track it’s
actually this moody piece that closes
Nirvana’s second album it’s okay
centered around Cobain singing and
guitar this song’s slow timing is quite
a change of pace from the band’s
typically heavier sound
[Music]
but it also expertly shows their softer
side though the story that he wrote it
while sleeping under a bridge might not
be true that doesn’t take anything away
from something in the ways impact
[Music]
after first being released as the b-side
to the smells like teen spirit single
aneurysm was released and recorded for
[Music]
featuring lyrics about Cobain’s
aneurism is a fast-paced trap that
[Music]
with its hard-hitting lyrics thumping
drums blasting bass and guitar it’s not
surprising that it quickly became a live
staple
number seven in bloom the poppier
version of in bloom found on nevermind
couldn’t be more different than the punk
rock original recorded the year before
fortunately it still had its grunge edge
[Applause]
[Music]
in fact Cobain’s vocals and it’s
contrasting song dynamics were so
well-received
that the song landed on the British
charts and American rock radio
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
let’s not forget its memorable music
video that poke fun at old TV variety
shows
[Applause]
Cobain put his grunge rocker rep on the
line by including this poppier sounding
track on Nirvana’s debut
[Music]
while the ballot stood out among the
album’s harder songs it showcased
Cobain’s varied songwriting talents
[Music]
five years later the live acoustic
version off MTV Unplugged in New York
gave it a new lease on life
[Music]
about a girl topped Billboard’s Modern
Rock Tracks chart and continues to be
highly regarded among fans
Nirvana’s debut album bleach costs six
hundred and six dollars and seventeen
cents to record that bill was paid by
Jason Everman who briefly served as the
band’s second guitarist in 1989 while he
doesn’t play on the album he does appear
on the cover number five all apologies
[Music]
in utero second single was another
modern rock chart topper for nirvana
[Music]
with its thoughtful lyrics and Cobain’s
plaintiff but poignant vocals the grunge
number really knows how to take you on
but it’s the stripped-back version from
the band’s MTV Unplugged in New York
performance that became a rock radio
commenter the real Jake Jonathan says
anyone else sad because they weren’t
[Music]
featuring the quiet versus and loud
choruses technique that they were
quickly becoming known for never minds
third single is classic nirvana all the
with Cobain’s growling vocals distorted
electric guitars
Krist Novoselic is steady bass and dave
girls pounding drums
[Music]
lithium found a home on the Billboard
Hot 100 and strengthened the band’s
number three heart-shaped box
[Music]
the first single off in utero starts off
slowly but surely but it’s the loud and
intense chorus that really makes
heart-shaped box so unforgettable
adding some haunting lyrics and you’ve
got a modern Rock Tracks chart topper
[Music]
the tunes music video also caused quite
a stir with its wierd imagery which
included influences from The Wizard of
Oz a shot of an old man being crucified
and a little girl in Ku Klux Klan
[Music]
number two come as you are thanks to its
stand out guitar riff nvm second single
became nirvana second top 40 smash on
the Billboard Hot 100 starting off the
Moody and restraint come-as-you-are
really gets loud during the chorus
[Music]
and is filled with lyrical
contradictions which in turns reflect
the contradictory nature of human beings
[Music]
the song wasn’t only a radio hit but
also contain one of Cobain’s lengthiest
[Music]
perhaps the most well-known left-handed
guitarist since Jimi Hendrix Kurt Cobain
was actually right-handed at least when
it came to handwriting and drumming
before we unveil our number one pick
[Music]
Polly wants a cracker think I should get
number one smells like teen spirit
commenter Jimmy Dean says it’s funny
Kurt didn’t even like smells like teen
spirit
alternative rock and music in general
were never the same after Nirvana burst
onto the scene with this anthem of
adolescents indifference thanks to its
Pixies inspired loud quiet loud formula
and angst-filled vocals smells like teen
spirit introduced to the mainstream to
the Seattle sound and its blend of heavy
music with POC tendencies
[Music]
no other musicians spoke to a generation
quite like Nirvana
nevermind sales and musical legacy which
are inextricable from this top-ten smash
prove it
[Music]
well how’d we do teen spirits a tricky
one on the one hand it’s the obvious
number one on the other hand it’s the
obvious number one but I’m sure you guys
might have a different ranking or maybe
a different list altogether and all is
not lost
weave it in the comments below and I’m
sure some other Nirvana fans will share
their opinions as well if you need a bit
more Krist Novoselic in your life and
let’s be honest don’t we all need more
Krist Novoselic in our lives we have a
lot more Nirvana content there’s top 10
short-lived bands memorable performances
from the MTV VMAs musicians who died too
soon
musicians who died at 27 controversial
music videos we even have a video on
Kurt’s fashion style and an interview
but before we go let me ask you this
what’s your favorite Kirk guitar is it
the Fender Jaguar or one of the Mustangs
is quoted favorite model or maybe
something else like one of the universes
so many choices all right
we’ll see you next time until then I’m
