Interview with Of Monsters and Men

[Music]
this Icelandic band went straight to the
Billboard top ten with their first album
they had a pie dragonfly hi my name is
Stephanie welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’re speaking with the Monsters
and Men we came back with the story to
say so we like to start with the origin
stories of the band so if you could just
give me a brief summary of how you guys
got together it started out with Nana
she was playing alone and she was
feeling kind of lonely so she asked me
to join her and and play a few shows
with her and after that we asked rocky
to join us with backup vocals and
playing the glockenspiel and little now
he is taking over but now he’s taking
over like few months after that we asked
art enough the MAL drummer to join us
and a few months after that we asked get
the end of the joiners to form a proper
big band
hello from dirty parts and Lucretia
Sasha
you guys come from Iceland Iceland can
be sometimes an isolated country so how
do you think that translates to your
music I think it has a lot of lot to do
with how our music came out when you’re
isolated you’re you know you have
nothing else to do and try to find music
and you create music and a lot of times
like in Iceland is a very you know
isolated country and then you have a lot
of creativity I’ve actually never
thought about the inspiration from the
country but as we keep getting these
questions I think that we you’re always
wrong like if you’re surrounded by
something you will get inspired just
naturally
[Music]
they were scared down in their homes do
you guys often get compared to other
acts that are from Iceland you know York
sigur rós know that we actually do
sometimes I’ve seen like yeah they’re
not like similar in the music though no
not at all yeah we have a mystique
Icelandic mystique around us
[Music]
because like you’re consumed or started
to fake bands that have come out of
Iceland so it’s very natural people to
put us next they’re like oh yes there’s
a another band from Iceland like you’re
consumers but I think we are very
different from from those fans you know
their consumers are fantastic but we
like them and they may have influenced
us
[Music]
so how would you describe your music for
someone who’s never heard it like
chocolate or yours yes
[Music]
you wouldn’t use any of the traditional
labels or you’re not fans of those
labels for music what are you talking
about like in people yeah I never
understood it it’s really hard to like
say if someone asks you it’s very hard
to call it our you know at least for us
we didn’t start out thinking like we’re
gonna create folk music or something
like that which is creative whatever
sounded right from us you know and and
so it’s just the beauty that we create
classify something that you just made
[Music]
so can you describe your live show for
someone who’s never seen it animal-like
behaviors most of all we just try to
really have fun with it
and we try to get the crowd to be
interacting on our website and the one
big team we just want to have fun yeah
it’s really strange that our name the
name of the band isn’t just fun but
somebody talked to
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
I wanted to ask you guys what you love
most about making music I love the
feeling when one moment you’re sitting
at home and you’re you know you pick up
your tire you’re just writing something
and there’s come out and there’s this
idea coming and then a few months later
you’re standing on stage and there’s
this crowd singing along it’s like one
of the most like epic weird feelings
that you could have just like that how
did you go from there
you know yeah that and I I would say
like in the studio when you’re like when
you have that idea like you’ve played it
and you’re adding strange stuff maybe to
it it’s a lot of fun here the end result
and you’re like okay how did it go from
an acoustic guitar to that thank you so
much guys thank you
