Interview With Metal Band Derelict

while their style can be considered
schizophrenic this metal band is sure to
incorporate something for everyone hi
I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with eric from derelict who would you
say are some of the band’s most
unexpected influences for myself i would
have to go back to like my punk rock
roots from when i started playing guitar
like sometimes I listen to old offspring
and Greenday albums the raw structure of
that music is is really appealing
because it’s not technical or complex in
any way but they just put together songs
that are fun to listen to Darryl also if
you listen on our album the song
Xenocide has an intro that’s kind of
combines Italian folk music with
neoclassical stuff
we were really surprised when he brought
that to the table so we all kind of
branch off in directions like that how
do you feel about all the sub genres in
metal today and where would you say that
derelict fits in we have a death metal
foundation for sure we throw some
progressive influences in there some
melodic influences there’s a lot of
thrash metal to the music’s definitely
technical but I mean at the core well
the genre tags can be kind of really
helpful if you’re looking for new music
to listen to it can also be divisive
because kids especially our tribe were
almost like I like this kind of music
and if you don’t you suck and it kind of
fractures people personally I got away
from that kind of thing a long time ago
if I hear a band and I like it it
doesn’t matter if it’s hardcore or
Norwegian black metal then like I mean
if you want to understand the music’s
roots look into it and you know find out
what what it is really but as long as
it’s cool
let’s talk about your track machete what
prompted that song well that’s the song
we have a music video for the lyrics of
the song were inspired just by the fact
that there’s clauses written into the
Declaration of Human Rights when that
was signed after World War two the USSR
had a big hand in what the definition of
genocide was and how human rights were
going to be dealt with they got it to be
defined as the extermination of racial
groups they kind of left out political
groups which allowed the USSR to
exterminate just people in their country
who opposed them without breaking
international laws it’s just kind of to
bring to light that like we think we’re
protected by this overarching system but
it’s very politicized there’s my new
details in there that that at any time
things can just be flipped over I was
outraged when I learned about that so
it’s kind of to tell people check this
out and you know know know what your
countries can actually do if they have
to if they want to
do you think it’s musicians role to try
to influence their listeners anyone who
has the stage who has the mic is
responsible for just putting out
positivity if kids especially are going
to listen to what we’re saying then we
should first and foremost consider you
know the impact of our message and i’m
not talking in terms of censorship i’m
talking in terms of if I tell someone
something what is that gonna make them
think what is that going to make them do
like I don’t claim to be a trustworthy
information source and I just hope to be
more of an inspirational information
source not to you know to put a spin on
it one way or another but just to kind
of express anger that certain things are
happening and propose that people find
out more about it
