Interview with Billy Talent

this Canadian punk rock quartet started
off with underground success added a
dash of mainstream popularity and today
they remain a force on the scene
hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Billy Talent
let’s take it down race upstairs
today something we always like to start
with is the origin stories of the bands
that we introduce to tell us how Billy
Talent first got together grade 9
Catholic school in our in our Catholic
school uniforms we were all in school
together Mian was in one band me John
and Ben were in another band and we kind
of played shows together here and there
like talent shows at the school and then
both those bands kind of diffused and
then we created has and that was in 1993
we were called peasant Patel in 1999
same four members that we have now and
we change a name in Philly to Billy
Talent in 1999 because the name has
sucked we added an extra set at the end
just so we didn’t get sued by the candy
company Pez and Billy Talent is really
spelled talents with two L’s so we
thought we’ve taken L off just so he
wouldn’t get sued by the guy who wrote
the movie yeah and in the movies this
talent is spelled t22 old
can you brought something up that it was
the same for members and that was
something I want to talk about I mean so
many times when I’m researching bands
you see like former members and the list
is like longer than the current members
how have you guys managed to avoid that
I think it’s a love for music and we’d
really love each other and what we do
together and there’s this chemistry that
we we just know works I think another
reason would be maybe we it took us a
long time to get success and once we got
the success we were really we’ve really
really didn’t take it for granted at all
and just we all just stuck together and
tried to get to where we wanted to be
besides just us playing in a band in the
early days we all hung out in the same
kind of group of friends so we’re all
like really good friends so it didn’t
feel like okay look we’re gonna put this
band together and let’s see if that guys
it you know it’s not like we put an ad
in the paper to find a member or
anything like that
if you could pick one idol or icon from
your specific instruments would you pick
bridge against the machine brad wilk I
loved the way he played drums I love the
style of drums he played kind of a
hip-hop vibe overtop of rock music with
one of the best front men in rock and
roll so that was my favorite
I’d say Jimmy Page for me like his
guitar playing in the 70s was was a far
ahead of a lot of his contemporaries and
I end up learning guitar playing a lot
of Led Zeppelin records so and he’s an
amazing producer I look up to him that
regard as well
well how do you think that your music
has kind of evolved from album to album
since the beginning what do you think
more focus I think if you listen to our
first CD we put out some of those songs
could be like taken apart and made into
about four different songs you know like
17 different songs yeah I think as you
get older and you become better
songwriters you learn to focus musical
parts into one thing what that makes the
song work together as a whole rather
than just a bunch of parts
down on your knees you tell luck so Tom
open your eyes
