Instant Cult Classic: Repo The Genetic Opera

your time is up repo the genetic opera
has been hailed from the start as an
instant culture clash then welcome to
watchmojo.com i’m your host Laila today
we have the chance to talk to some cast
and creators to find out more about this
production please tell us who you play
in this movie and a bit about your
character I’m Alexa Vega and I played
Shiloh Wallace in repo the genetic opera
my character is kind of the guide to the
film she kind of leads you to all these
crazy people this movie’s a fairy tale
and she would be the equivalent to Alice
and Alice in Wonderland she goes down
the rabbit hole and she’s introduced to
basically this mystical crazy world how
did this cabaret rock style opera come
to your attention it happened about
eight years ago I was given a script by
these two riders Darren and Terence and
I’m a musical fan I mean that’s actually
why I came to Los Angeles that’s a weird
thing to say wasn’t to do horror films
it was to do musicals I pleaded beg and
grovel to let me direct the stage
version of repo and I did we were
supposed to be open like for four nights
and we ended up staying open three weeks
and the further we extended it the more
people would show up to rust as the
characters I knew at that moment if I
ever had the ability I wanted to turn
this into a movie because this could be
an awesome movie the songs were all
pre-recorded how did you approach this
film in terms of script songs
post-production it was a nightmare first
off we had to transcribe the music then
we had to pass the music out in their
vocal lessons then we had to go in and
record the music and do it 50 times each
song then we had to record the band
members playing the music then we had to
mix the music down to play back on set
which they had a lip-sync to we add to
when we were editing sync up everything
it’s so hard because not only when you
shoot a film
you have a couple ways that you want to
do it and you’re able to change it up on
set go with this because it’s
pre-recorded you have to have everything
thought out and no matter what you do on
the day it’s done there is no changing
it music can really heighten the or
experience why do rock and horror go
together I think it’s just because it’s
different and it’s more exciting I think
most people are used to musicals being
all happy and everything I think what
we’re doing here is pumping it up people
are just so used to seeing the same
movie over and over again and sure
that’s kind of what the world is used to
so they like it in their inner team but
we don’t just want to entertain we want
to help advance the way films are and I
think that’s what Rico does it
completely takes it to a whole new level
you can’t look at it as I’m gonna go to
the movies because you can’t really
compare it to a movie it’s an event it’s
a concert basically
