whether it happens in the schoolyard or
online bullying can have devastating
effects for a child and for parents
struggling to help stop it hi I’m Pamela
from watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking to dr. Loula I morali a
psychiatrist at the Montreal Children’s
Hospital about recognizing the signs of
bullying in children and what can be
done to help overcome it are there are
some key signs that parents can look out
for if they suspect that their child is
being bullied some of the most common
characteristics would be a child that
will start expressing have diminished
interest or something that they liked
before a child that will become more
withdrawn that will start becoming
anxious about going to school or
frequenting a certain environment
because sometimes it may not be in the
school environment when asked sometimes
by the parents or even their peers or
their siblings as to the reason
initially they may not divulge that
information because I don’t feel well
about themselves or they want to hide it
for different reasons so yes parents
should be alerted to the fact that it is
very common today that it does exist and
they should be persistent in trying to
find out what is going on what can
parents do if they suspect that their
child is being bullied they should with
their attitude and approach try to come
back again and again and try to observe
and bring up their observations and at
the same time without any kind of
judgmental attitude if the approach
should be with warmth and understanding
and as much as possible exploratory
rather than just rental in any kind of
sense what are some of the long-term
effects of being bullied most often we
have internalizing problems for example
anxiety even depression unfortunately
very often self-harm and even suicide
attempt some weights have been quite
widely publicized even psychotic
symptoms that seem to be associated with
bullying so it is
the consequences and long-term
consequences and that of course leaves
out the low self-esteem that has other
kind of consequences but the most
immediate ones are quite important for
the mental health of a person if a child
confirms that they are being bullied
what are the best courses of action to
take the actual should be immediate they
let’s say the child confirms to a parent
that they are being bullied more often
than not that I would say and especially
in the younger children just the
involvement of a parent for example
depending in which environment it
happens and the fact that the parent may
alert the other adult who is supervising
that particular environment that may
have a positive effect right away if the
teacher or the teachers are not
responsive the parent would should go to
the principal and if the principal and
the school are not responsible or they
are not sufficient to contain that all
school boards have services and there is
always a way to go higher and higher
especially if there is any evidence of
it let’s say cyber bullying something
that can be documented is a criminal act
so somebody could go as far as no
actually calling the police if the
problem is cyberbullying what can
parents do to make sure that their child
isn’t being targeted online they have to
be aware of all the different forms of
cyber bullying they should believe their
child right away because many parents
are not as familiar with how significant
the problem can be for their child if
something is posted in a facebook it can
be disseminated right away to at least
hundreds of people thousands of people
and it stays sort of forever children
are very aware of these realities and
the experience we haven’t lived through
that reality at that age and the damage
is not sometimes
clearly understood what doesn’t work is
telling the child to stop using the type
of technology because you could bind the
computer at home but there’s computer
access everywhere you could take away
the cell phone but everybody else has a
cell phone so if that is not something
that can work how can parents encourage
their children not to be an accomplice
10 any of this type of behavior we
should discourage them from you know
being involved in type of relationships
that assume control and power over nanny
individual role modeling within the
family in the golden rule if you do not
want something down to hear you don’t do
it to others and if you wouldn’t do
something in real life in direct contact
you don’t do it so any other means thank
you very much thank you
