How to Go Green at Home

going green starts at home hi I’m
Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with environmental writer Adria vessel
about her book e coholic home and to
find out a few easy tips on how to turn
over that green leaf so this may seem
like a simplistic question but why would
you say it’s important to live green at
home well a lot of green crimes actually
happen in our homes everything from
water wastage to energy hogging to bring
in invisible chemicals that end up
lodging themselves in our bodies every
decision you make in the day from the
moment you wake up and you know stretch
and get out of bed and brush your teeth
getting in the shower and flicking on
the lights taking your cell phone with
you all those decisions can be greened
along the way they all have an
environmental impact and they can all be
improved and you know what we have
complete control over weight well mostly
complete control over what happens in
our homes unless you’re a renter then
it’s a little bit more limited but still
we definitely have more control over
those decisions than you do when you go
to work or school what area of home
ownership would you say is the worst in
terms of green crimes the antibacterial
chemicals drive me bananas because we
think we’re killing bacteria in our home
but we’re actually bringing in a
chemical that’s being found now in
breast milk and our blood streams
dolphins in our children just getting
your energy usage down by turn down the
thermostat and not leaving the lights on
the house and even unplugging all your
electronics when you leave the house
will actually reduce your energy bills
by ten percent what areas of home
ownership would you say are most easily
greened there are so many tiny little
easy green changes you can make getting
the low-flow showerhead unplugging your
electronics even things like switching
to a green cleaner if you don’t want to
take the time to make them from scratch
with vinegar and baking soda just go to
the store pick a green cleaner instead
of a regular commercial cleaner where
would you say we should start the
process in our homes a good place to
start especially if you live in a colder
climate would be at this time of year to
make sure that you’re keeping the cold
drafts out because we waste incredible
amount of energy through you know our
windows walls all the sockets that are
in our house and you could just go run
with an incense stick and look for
drafts and you know plug those up first
and foremost most people think that
green living is more expensive can you
argue against this everything
and I think our grandparents did really
ended up saving the environment without
them even knowing it you know they
naturally turned off the lights and they
left the room they naturally turn down
the thermostat at night and these were
all moves that happen to also be better
for the planet but they just thought of
it as a way of saving money instead of
going to the laundromat and spending
three hundred dollars a year to dry your
clothes just bring them home and and
hang them up on racks and you’ll save
that 300 bucks instead or if you have
room for a veggie garden in the summer
you can actually pocket about 600 bucks
a year just from growing your own
vegetables in a small plot of land you
don’t need a big farm to do that so so
many of the changes that i talked about
end up keeping money in your pocket for
a reason because i wanted to kind of
counteract that myth thank you very much
thanks for having me
