hi I’m Veronica watchmojo.com and today
our fitness guru and Nick Robinson is
teaching me how to do my first-ever
handstand so today we’re going to learn
some handstand basics we’re going to
learn how to pull up into handstand
using a wall now most people when they
first try are so afraid that their
elbows buckle crashing their head into
the floor so if there’s one thing I
should recommend is whatever you do when
you kick up and kick out of hand Stan
keep your arms energized and straight
don’t bend them so Veronica are you
ready to learn how to do some handstands
well the first thing to remember is that
your handstand is basically you standing
up which is flipped upside down so the
first thing we’re going to look at is
your own posture so let’s start by
taking your hands up to the ceiling and
I want you to press powerfully into your
palm just like you’re in handstand
I want you to take your feet apart a
little bit just it’s this size a little
bit closer because you’re your alignment
of your feet to your hip socket where it
joins is about the size of your own fist
between your feet so you can take them
in just a little bit now I know I have
really good architecture from the heel
to the hip and I’m looking for really
good architecture all the way through
the palm except as you can see Veronica
is not symmetrical in fact most people
aren’t symmetrical so you have to work
on energizing through the palms and the
fingertips drawing down the shoulder
blades and if you can see I’m going to
turn Veronica to the side most women
have a tendency to stand like this with
their bum out and men have a tendency to
do their handstands with their chest out
right is where we have the most muscle
the most weight so important thing the
architecture of the hands down is to be
perfectly stacked so you’re going to
draw in the ribs and you’re going to
pull the pelvis and energize the inner
thigh and I want you to put really
powerful energy all the way from the
the hand and fingertips all the way down
through the heels and are you ready now
to try the handstand now I know there’s
a lot of fear wrapped around doing a
handstand going upside down as scary you
might fall over you start thinking about
all these other scenarios well that’s
why handstand is actually a really good
meditative exercise because it takes you
really into the present moment you stop
thinking and projecting into the future
and creating all these fears and you
develop a sense of fearlessness but
we’re going to take it slow we’re going
to start against the wall the first
thing you need to remember is if your
hands are going to become your feet you
need to use your hands like they would
be feet so just like your toes grip the
floor you’re going to spread your
fingertips powerfully so that you have a
nice flat surface on the ground I’m
going to try to align the risk to the
shoulder a lot of people have a tendency
to do their handstands too wide and they
use that ability to have good
architecture hands right in front open
up the palm open up the fingertips and I
want you to grasp your fingertips into
the floor and use their fingertips to
help you balance front and back ready
so let’s take ourselves against the wall
you’re going to give yourself about one
hand space distance from the wall you’re
going to place your palms right around
here so I’m going to have Veronica kick
up from the ground why because if you
kick up freestanding you’re probably
going to give yourself far too much
momentum so in the beginning this is a
good way to control the powers you come
up so Veronica I want you to kick up and
hit your feet lightly against the wall
behind you but perfect now you see no
fear the wall is there you’re not going
to fall down your head is right distance
to clear look at your hands powerfully
energize the arm just like we spoke
about before I want you to pull in these
ribs and I’m going to put my fist
between your thighs and I want you to
squeeze my fist as hard as you possibly
can and pull your ribs in pull the
ribbon pull the ribbon so now Veronica
is doing a handstand all on her own
the reason she is holding this hands
down you can kick down if you’d like is
because what happens when I have her
energize her inner thighs by squeezing
against my fists is that it
automatically pulls her pelvis into
neutral position ensuring that you can
have a really nice
hand-stamped and then eventually as you
practice by yourself you can take all
that away just energize the thighs by
themselves and there’s your handstand
