How To Be a Street Smart Kid

it’s a parent’s worst fear that his or
her child will be attacked kidnapped or
molested hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’ll
be teaching kids how to be street smart
a street smart kid is basically aware of
his surroundings and certainly aware of
some of the options he or she has in
attracting attention to themselves when
you get attacked we all have tendency to
freeze it’s what we do after we freeze
that separates if you want the men from
the boys what happens is after we go
through the prevention part etc when we
start the abduction simulations the kids
quickly realize that it’s not as easy as
it looks in the movies what is the best
way to teach children you can’t
introduce concepts that are way beyond
them so you need to go down to their
level you need to make it fun and you
need to make it interactive you need to
do little hands-on simulations with them
where you empower them and in your
classes do you address the issue of
authority figures that they may already
trust we do incorporate in our
scenario-based training a section on mom
and dad left us with uncle George who’s
babysitting on so we get the kids to
stand up and say no I don’t like this
game or no I don’t want to play this or
I just don’t feel right and you know to
move away the other important point we
try to emphasize is you’re not gonna
have a million chances to react so
whatever chance you’re gonna have you
have to make sure that the door is open
or the windows open so that if you do do
something that you have a way out do you
find that classes like this we may run
the risk of making kids paranoid I don’t
think so I mean with the amount of kids
that we work with it gives them the
experience that they can at least do
something and know that they have the
option of doing something and what are
some of the basic ideas that you try to
impart to them various concepts of when
people approach that it’s not normal for
example for an adult to ask a child for
assistance we try to explain to them
certain concepts when they’re out and
about what to look out for where can I
get help what about public phones and
it’s very nice that we talk about being
taken away but what do you do if you get
taken
many parents make the mistake of telling
their children don’t talk to strangers
well I’m sorry to say if i kidnap your
child who do you think is gonna help
your child it’s going to be a stranger
it’s not gonna be somebody they know so
we got to go through okay a police
officer what are they what kind of car
do they drive is it the same thing as a
taxi so we try to incorporate different
themes and get them to be aware of some
of their options if God forbid push
comes to shove thank you very much my
pleasure
