welcome to show 13 of hip mojo on your
host ash can cover solution and I’m CT
more and this week we’re going to be
talking about a whole bunch of things
women in tech or the lack thereof the
lack thereof some new laws pertaining to
content and distribution online let’s
get started all right so uh last week we
did this thing we were talking about you
know the the talismans attack who might
replace steve jobs as the people that as
the person that everyone looks to for
envisioning the future you got a little
bit of feedback around it specifically
why weren’t there any women on the list
so so tell us what happened well
basically i think that the reason the
article wasn’t so much like you know
great woman a great people in tech or
insightful people in tech it was really
who the media is going to look to as the
next sort of leader or voice the guiding
light and i actually think that you know
let’s not kid ourselves society is both
racist and sexist and the media captures
that actually quite well i think there’s
a double standard both for and against
women sometimes a conference planner or
a magazine publisher will put a woman on
the cover even if it’s like a business
publishing company just because it suits
their interest and then other times you
know if a woman does something she will
never be forgiven whereas a man will
just be given the carte blanche to go on
and you know there’s plenty of examples
carol bartz unfairly vilified Carly
Fiorina Meg Whitman I’m not saying these
people have not made mistakes but the
kind of mistakes they did if they were a
man it would be like forgotten but
because they’re woman it’s like oh my
god this crazy-ass person should never
you know be given the keys to a board
room again and I think that that there’s
a double standard I was actually very
open about that and the point of my
article was let’s be candid it’s like
the affirmative action thing either you
know we should realize that woman’s
accomplishments should be amplified
tenfold to account for that sexism which
i think is wrong or we should measure
everyone’s accomplishments evenly and
you know not give preferential treatment
so the point was I don’t think that any
member
the media is going to really think that
a woman would be the next talisman
because there might be a woman number
you know 50s to but there would be
probably 50 ml before her which I know
it’s not what you want to hear but but
it’s the truth right so so you were just
simply you know highlighting the fact
that them you don’t think it’s likely
that a media would grab on to any woman
because you can’t think of one in a role
that the media would find sexy unless
they wanted to say look yours a woman
Marissa Meyer at Google Sheryl Sandberg
at Facebook these are all great smart
accomplished people but it’s like
somebody said well why is in Sheryl
Sandberg on the list I said well Eric
Schmidt is so Sheryl Sandberg coo of
facebook former VP at Google I said well
Eric Schmidt isn’t on the list like are
you going to tell me that Cheryl is more
deserving than Eric unless you want to
put a woman and that’s the objective
which and goes back to your point in
which case the media is like yeah
reverse sexism yeah reverses um you know
it’s weird though when you when you see
all these startups come along that are
supposed to disrupt that space or
disrupt whatever space and granted most
of them like fall out of the limelight
after a year the the funny thing is is
all the founders at the head of these
startups they tend to be men for the
most part why do you think that is why
do you think women aren’t pushing
themselves to be you know tech
entrepreneurs okay well that’s a great
question I think the bigger this is
something that one of them you know a
lot of people on Twitter initially a lot
of lady readers were like what the hell
you know ash is basically saying we’re
not worthy and I said no one I explained
them and then a lot of them came around
they even did a follow up explaining i
think most of them were like okay you
know this is he’s he’s not a sexist pig
basically but one of the critiques uh I
think hit it hit the nail on the head
and she said you know she actually took
the time to deconstruct the initial list
and she said most of the guys on this
list are inventors or you know
programmers or whatever and what she
realized was that sorry what she
realized was that there was a lack of
women entrepreneurs there was a lack of
women sort of founders that there’s a
lot of and I understand this too
sometimes you want to bring in a woman
caretaker because there’s less ego
involved and sometimes there’s more ego
but sometimes it’s just about you know
getting a company from point A to point
B whereas there’s a lack now yesterday
we heard that who was at Sheryl Sandberg
as
well as someone else who I’m forgetting
which is a shame and i’ll mention it but
they basically back this new sort of on
you know this new organization that
helps women become entrepreneurs i think
that is the critical missing path i
think that initial risk taking is very
hard I i personally also think the
generations have changed like 10 years
ago and I got into new media you know
what there wasn’t that many women you
know especially in text side in
marketing that’s why I go to marketing
conferences or so many women it’s very
varied you get different perspectives
and all that but I think within the next
generation it won’t even really be felt
they’ll still be some lingering sexism
and bias and prejudice but it’s really
changing fast but my point the point of
this critique was that that’s the last
sort of mile that women have to address
you do need more entrepreneurs and part
of that I think is you know only in San
Francisco is risk-taking really really
valued and more and more in New York to
most places people think you’re crazy to
start a company and let’s face it women
have this general personal development
path that means that they eventually
need to get married and have kids which
I know it is whether its nature or
nurture yeah for the most part women
tend to be more risk adverse than men in
Western societies also because women
eventually I think are you know
conditioned to think I have to get
married I have to have kids and you know
what like I started watch module six
years ago well if three years ago my
wife sort of start the company with me
she had the opportunity to leave and go
start having kids and even though she’s
still involved and sometimes too much
for my lucky i’m joking the company I
just think yeah I just think it’s
impossible for a man and a woman to have
the same expectation and this is you
know I threw in all these Gloria Steinem
quotes to sort of not as a token you
know to disarm the audience is it yeah
that’s a little cheesy but I was like
here you don’t like get out of jail for
free card but the point is you don’t
want women to start being men there’s
it’s great to be different women are
different than men and and some aspects
are better some aspects are worse but I
just think that if women do want to have
kids I Got News for You having the
company is going to disrupt that plan is
it sexist to say that is it realistic to
say that I don’t know but if any woman
goes out there saying I’m going to start
a company and in two and a half years
i’m going to take time off to start a
family it ain’t going to happen and
somebody should tell you maybe not your
feminism teacher but i’ll tell you it’s
funny you you bring
the family aspect into it because I
wonder how many male tech entrepreneurs
actually have families I don’t know that
Steve job had Steve Jobs yes Steve Jobs
had a kid that he basically disowned and
then he had a couple more kids with his
you know and the last thing he wanted to
do was actually get closer to them and
be a better father but overall he
actually led a pretty balanced life even
though it was a workaholic like he
didn’t want to become one of those
bizarro tech billionaires you know he
lived in a fairly normal nice home but
fairly normal home listen at the end of
the day there’s 24 you know hours in a
day 7 days you do have to pick and
choose your battles the the line i would
like to sort of close out and then we go
to next segment is a lot of people
sacrifice their health and health
includes happiness and family and
balance for wealth and then once they
accumulate well they spend it on trying
to regain their exactly right so i want
to say finish it on this point being an
entrepreneur it’s not a you know 925
kind of gig it’s a full-on you know
total war crazy thing women can do it
sometimes better than men some men are
suck at it but i have two daughters and
i’m at a point where I’m like you know
what I would never trade off being a
father for being a better entrepreneur
it sort of I have to learn to balance
both and there’s virtues and what I do
what I would not like to see as a father
of two girls is for society to get to
the point where we all all of a sudden
start devaluing just having a family and
raising kids you know and then we sort
of get all these women who are crazy
driven to be entrepreneurs and and at
the end you know they live they live a
more hollow existence so this is
probably gonna sound very sexist a lot
of feminine already did it are you did
but I just think like there is merit and
virtue into just having a kid and
raising that kid and being a good parent
and as much as I try to be there at home
and do all that stuff you know I Got
News for You babies they prefer their
mother it’s just there’s our connection
so I just think like we need to put this
discussion of technology and startups
and the sort of you know bad sense of
objectives and moral compass we need to
put this back into the greater context
of life and family well I think it’s
also important to say that women making
these lists it’s it’s more of a symptom
rather than a cause you know people are
less likely to take women seriously p
women for whatever reason are less
likely to take the risk to become
entrepreneurs and that’s why they don’t
end up on the list
as much as yeah my personal take all
right so Laura the truth will set you
free but it first will piss you off I
said anything all right I’ve like a
short break we’ll come back and round
two and what we’re going to say in round
2 my piss you off even more than round
one
