Halo Reach Interview: The Appeal of The Franchise


the most recent installment of the Halo
franchise is also one of the most highly
anticipated
hi I’m Rebecca Braden and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with the studio creative director of
Microsoft Studios 343 industries josh
holmes about Halo Reach Halo Reach is
the culmination of bungees 10 years
working on the Halo universe it’s the
biggest and most amazing halo experience
today it tells one of the most important
moments in the human covenant war which
is the invasion of reach which is
humanity’s most important outpost other
than Earth it really centers on the
story of noble team and their heroic
actions and sacrifices to try and keep
hope alive for Humanity
how would you say that reach compares to
the other games in the franchise it’s
the biggest halo experience today when
you take both the campaign and the
multiplayer side and then add into that
all the work that bungees put in to
forge and forge world it’s just a
massive game it’s incredibly epic in
terms of scale it’s the first Halo game
to really deliver planetary scale
battles but also do that from the
perspective and campaign of a really
intimate story and the story of noble
team
there’s apparently a level in the game
that features ship-to-ship combat can
you tell us more about that level this
is from a campaign standpoint that the
types of experiences that you have in
reach are unlike anything that you’ve
experienced before in Halo and it really
speaks to that epic scale that bungees
managed to deliver on it so there is a
mission in long night of Solace where
you fight to a saber launch facility and
you sir strapped into a saber and you
launch into space and you have this
colossal space battle are there any
other gameplay features that kind of up
the ante for the game definitely the
armor abilities are new for reach and
they really change the entirety of the
gameplay sandbox these sort of take the
equipment that we’ve had in past halos
and really expand upon that and make
strategic elements that you can use
throughout the game and they’re
rechargeable abilities that really
change up gameplay things like the
jetpack and armor lock would make a huge
addition to the halo sandbox what do you
think it is about the halo story
mythology that makes it so appealing I
think the universe of halo is so deep
and rich and multi-layered and there’s
so much mystery that sort of permeates
everything whether it’s in the games or
in the other elements like the comics
and the novels I think fans really
appreciate the painstaking detail that
has gone into crafting that and I think
that it really touches on some sort of
deep human elements these ideals of
heroism and that humanity is something
worth fighting for
