the art of etiquette in the gym is to
make sure that the people who are around
you in sharing space with you are not
made uncomfortable by whatever it is
that you are doing almost every gym has
a list of rules to follow but most
certainly every gym has a list of
unspoken rules hi I’m Veronica with
watchmojo.com and today I Nick Robinson
shares the do’s and don’ts of gym
etiquette as a trainer these things may
be obvious to you but is there anything
that you wish everyone knew don’t give
other people advice it won’t be
appreciated and the truth is if someone
is doing something incorrectly you
should let a personal trainer interfere
the other thing is you know it’s not a
weightlifting competition keep your ego
at the door and come here to do your own
work without turning it into how many
you know how much weight the other
person is lifting and how much weight
you’re lifting it’s the best way to get
injured isn’t trying to show off the
other thing that’s important is you know
grunting and sweating and exclaiming
over things is okay but swearing and
punching the wall and getting really
hyped up on your testosterone is not
okay it’ll make people uncomfortable the
other thing people need to realize you
should always leave your machines reset
to the most neutral position possible
because if someone is able to lift 280
pounds it’s wonderful but if I have a 67
year old lady coming in to use the
machine afterwards she’s not going to be
able to reset that machine so that she
can use it is it okay to socialize at
the gym if some people are you know
between sets and there’s the water
fountain and they’re open and smiling
and ready for conversation that’s
terrific in fact we hope that people
make friends in the gym because it makes
them more likely to come back but if you
see somebody who’s on the Stairmaster
and they’ve got their earphones in their
towel around and they’re very focused
then you know their body language is
telling you they do not want you to talk
to them is it okay for guys and girls to
hit on one another at a gym you know
there can be romance in the gym a lot of
couples meet on the gym floor and that’s
great but it’s not a bar you can’t stare
and stare at a pretty girl so it has to
be a healing healthy atmosphere they
can’t feel threatened or feel like
they’re going to be you know open to
conversation that’s unwelcome so you can
do it but do it
actually is there a dress code at the
gym if you are dressed to sexy to go to
the grocery store it’s probably too sexy
for the gym too and guys you shouldn’t
wear short shorts especially if you’re
not wearing underwear underneath them
what about cell phones are they okay to
bring to the gym you cannot bring your
cell phone on to the gym floor it’s
completely inappropriate and even more
so in the locker room you’re there to
get your work done and you don’t want to
be listening to other people’s very loud
and obnoxious conversations even if
you’re just text messaging when people
are doing for example a fitness
assessment and we’re trying to read
their heart rate if your cell phone is
on and it’s receiving messages it will
interfere with our heart monitors now in
the locker room you should actually turn
your cell phone off close the door and
leave it locked in your locker all cell
phones now have cameras in them the last
thing you want to be worried about is if
someone’s taking your picture is nudity
okay in the changing room when you’re
changing and you’re taking a shower and
you’re doing a sauna or a thermal
circuit it’s absolutely okay in fact
probably better to be doing it naked but
the truth is if you’re walking around
between spaces between the showers or
the thermal circuit or from your locker
to the Beauty area then you probably
should towel up if you’re working out
and you see your trainer can you ask
them questions if you see your trainer
on the gym floor and he’s with or he or
she is with another client you should
respect that clients time and not
interrupt if you see your trainer is
between clients on the floor absolutely
in fact I think all trainers would say
they would prefer you come and ask those
questions and go and do something that
could injure yourself but if you’re
taking those questions deeper and you’ve
been asking your trainer questions for
more than 10 minutes you’re picking
their brain for free and it would be
really kind of you if you would book
some time with them for a professional
consultation now everyone’s sharing
these weights what’s the proper
guideline to sharing don’t squat on
equipment
don’t leave your towel draped over a
piece of equipment because you’re using
it in alternates with another piece of
equipment don’t stay on a piece of
equipment too long there’s other people
waiting and be generous well thank you
very much that really helps thanks for
coming Veronica
