Guide to Drums – Backbeat and the Bass Drum

so you want to make sure you’re getting
your bass drum properly like with the
sticks you have to make sure that the
bass drum beater that is the felt pad or
felt round thing that hits the drum you
want to make sure that’s bouncing off
the drum we want to avoid burying the
beater into the drum just like we want
to avoid burying our sticks into the
snare drum or symbols okay the one thing
is you can get away with burying the
bass drum beater once in a while whereas
you really shouldn’t do it with the
sticks okay there are two ways of
hitting the bass drum with your right
foot on the bass drum pedal and that is
either with your heel down or with your
heel up with your heel down that is more
for a lighter touch more than you’re
playing in a jazz style or a soft rock
style and you’re really rockin out and
getting into it you’re going to want to
raise your heel so you get more power
and slam it down and get your nice big
kick out of the bass drum some people
have a double bass drum pedal where a
second liter is attached and your left
foot plays a remote pedal and you can
play with two feet just like you play
with two hands while you’re doing that
you can’t control the hi-hat cymbal
being open or closed you might want to
pick another sound source to keep time
on or you can buy a special what they
call a special clutch for your hi-hat
that you can hit with your stick and
that will close the hi-hat for you and
keep it there until you’re ready to use
it again
