most successful ice hockey franchise of
all time winning 24 Stanley Cup
championships and the team’s more than
100 year history founded on December 4th
1909 the Montreal Canadiens also known
as the Habs hold several distinctions
among both the sport of hockey and all
sports franchises in general they are
the only Club that predates the existing
National Hockey League having in fact
won its first Stanley Cup in 1916 one
year prior to the formation of the NHL
it is also the longest continuously
operating professional ice hockey team
and one of the oldest franchises in
North America alongside the New York
Rangers Boston Bruins Detroit Red Wings
Chicago Blackhawks and the Toronto Maple
Leafs the Montreal Canadiens are one of
the original six teams that have all
been part of the NHL since 1942 the
halves have won a record 24 Stanley Cups
with the most recent one coming in the
1992 1993 season the Canadiens have
played in several arenas over the years
most notably the Montreal Forum which
housed the team for seven decades and
saw 22 of the 24 Stanley Cup winners
1996 the Habs moved operations to the
Molson centre now the Bell Center where
they have yet to experience a league
championship in addition to its 24
Stanley Cup championships the team has
laid claim to some of the most talented
players of all time including the first
player ever to score 50 goals in a
season and 500 in his career Maurice the
Rocket Rashard other famous Habs include
jock Plante
Jean Beliveau guy LeFleur and Patrick
wah who helped lead his team to its last
two championships in 1986 and 1993 the
haves hold numerous records including
five consecutive Stanley Cup rings in
the late 1950s
during the 7677 season the hab set a
record for fewest losses in a regular
season with 60 wins 8 losses and 12 ties
in their home province of Quebec Hockey
is more than just a sport it’s a
religion and the Habs are considered
sacred for example on March 17th 1955
the fans rioted when NHL president
Clarence Campbell was on hand at the
Forum just days after he suspended
Maurice Rashard for hitting a referee in
2008 the fans rioted again after the
club won the first round of the playoffs
against the Boston Bruins the Montreal
Canadiens are indeed among the greatest
sports franchises of all time and will
remain a dominant contender long into
the future
