hi I’m PGA member Jay golden and welcome
to watchmojo.com today I’m going to talk
about the fairway bunker shot this was
taught to me by a professional named
Bill nari who Ben Hogan called the
greatest sand player on tour in that era
and basically he told me a tricky way to
do it he said it is the only shot in
golf where your hands come up or scoop
the ball every shot in golf either they
release this way or they hold on but
this is like the beginner scoop that’s
number one number two when you hit the
ball the club head actually skulls the
ball on the way up you hit almost zero
sand you have to have a very good lie
for this shot the ball has to be sitting
up and if it is you scoop the ball and
scull it on the upswing very little or
no sand is taken so you address the ball
of course with the club head off the
ground and when you come into that ball
you scull it on the upswing you don’t
take any sand at all your hands might be
a hair behind the ball at address and
you scull it a lot of people have
trouble out of fairway bunkers if you
start with your hands either even with
the ball or slightly behind the ball and
when you come into the ball your wrists
are coming up they’re scooping and you
scull the ball on the upswing without
hitting any sand you will hit some of
the greatest fairway bunker shots of
your life just the way Bill Neri did and
that’s why Ben Hogan called him the
greatest sand player on tour
