we also learn from Susan Pinker that in
the u.s. boys are three times as likely
to be placed in special education
classes and twice as likely to fail a
grade I talked a great deal in the book
about how males can be more extreme and
there are certain fragilities that are
more common among men so language
related disabilities or four times as
common among boys than among girls so
attention deficit disorders twice as
common among boys as girls at least
twice as common and Asperger’s syndrome
which is a high-functioning form of
autism is ten times as common so I look
at sex differences through those boys
either boys who have and men you have
attention deficit disorder or Asperger’s
syndrome or language problems such as
dyslexia and the paradox is that those
bright disciplined highly motivated
little girls who SAT beside those boys
in grade 3 the very gifted women are not
necessarily in the jobs that we thought
they would be by now and so I went to
look at these women to interview these
high-achieving women to find out what
was going on and why they made the
choices that they did yeah and I look at
the science that explains some of these
choices how have sort of earlier
feminists failed to take biology into
account well I would say that you know
we can’t really with our rearview mirror
we can’t really say that because the
science that we have access to now
wasn’t available then but seeing men and
women as identical and only shaped by
culture was necessary many decades ago
because it was a necessary tactic to
gain access to the kinds of education
zand jobs that women were barred from
but I think now we’re a few decades down
the line and we have the benefit of the
mapping of the human genome we have the
benefit of Mr is that tell us some very
amazing and interesting science about
the very subtle differences in wiring
between men and women that elucidates
some of the observations that everybody
sees around them and so it’s more a
question of intellectual interest as
opposed to trying to redesign the world
how has it
ben of disservice to men discounting
biological information well i think that
there’s been a tremendous emphasis on
moving girls and women ahead and i think
that’s been a great thing but right now
what we need to look at is these fragile
males because what we see on university
campuses and this is something you might
have remarked upon is that there’s so
many fewer male university students our
prisons are filled with men then the
ratio of male to female prisoners is 10
to 1 school shootings which everybody is
familiar with from the from the news
these are always young men who are
disenfranchised to have social disorders
of some type there are lots of men whose
literacy skills are compromised because
of poor language they’re their
vulnerabilities in it from the point of
view of language so you know from my
perspective I think it’s time to apply
what we’ve learned from giving women and
girls a leg up in the educational sphere
and apply what we’ve learned from
neuroscience to looking at these fragile
males to see if we can perhaps make sure
that more boys stay in school that they
learn how to read and that they stay
connected to society in a way that is
not dangerous to them or to other people
thank you very much for your time and
I’ll hear a background information we
really appreciate it ok my question
