Common Sports Injury: The ACL

time Veronica watchmojo.com and today
the expectation in juries and telling us
how to prevent them first off what is
your ACL ACL stands for anterior
cruciate ligament there’s two major
ligaments in the four major ligaments in
the knee but two in the center there’s
an ACL and a pcl and they crisscross in
the center of a neat and pretty much
stabilizes the knee and it connects the
upper bone the long bone of the thigh to
the shin bone why is this a common
injury among athletes and these are
somewhat vulnerable because the way
that’s shaped the knee is too flat
surfaces that are held together by a few
ligaments it doesn’t have as much other
bone surrounding it really encapsulated
a bit like the hip the hip is a socket
and the bone one ball fits really well
into the other also like in the elbow
that’s in general in sports there’s lots
of her often lots of force speed and
also there’s a chaotic component if it’s
a contact sport and you’re getting
hitter if there’s a lot of pivoting
these elements are found in quite a lot
of sports and so you might be a little
more susceptible to an ACL injury who’s
that highest risk some sports for
example rugby or football we have a high
incidence of collision so it’s a high
impact and the need can be vulnerable
their soccer as well can probably call
it fall into that category something
like skiing if you think of just
grabbing your toes and pulling on the
end of them that’s going to create a lot
of torsion but if you’ve got the end of
a ski and pull the end of that that’s
really going to create a lot of torsion
so there’s been a higher incidence
engender towards females some reasonings
being that the hips are a little wider
and the angle of the bones at the knee
is a little more acute and renders them
a little a little more unstable or a
risk and as well some elements of a lack
of strength and some of the leg or thigh
muscles and that may also lead to an
adequate strength to be able to repel
against the ceiling
is there something that you can do in
your workout to help avoid tearing your
ACL strengthening the ligament per se is
kind of questionable but you can
definitely strengthen the muscles around
and create more balance and coordination
and stability so those are the things we
try to work on how do you know if you’ve
torn your ACL what symptoms will you see
foot that’s planted and then the body
that turns turns the other way so you
will have that type of a mechanical I
guess feeling of your body turning while
your foot remaining in place is usually
a big impact and then there’s a pop or
crack some sort and your knee just
really feels painful for one and
unstable as another can be quite swollen
as well pretty quickly now before
practicing a sport what else is
important to remember concerning your
ACL the weekend warrior is kind of a guy
who gets injured probably most of them
because they’re just gonna go out on the
weekend and try to play at full speed at
one hundred percent somebody who’s
practicing a sport and practicing
regularly is going to be a little bit
more adept and able to endure the full
game if you’re returning after an injury
then you’re going to have to have a plan
for returning slowly just one-on-one
with the coach and then returning to
practice and then eventually returning
to half a game and maybe a full game
thank you very much guys very welcome
