left me with nothing but good things to
say about the 2011 550 I the five series
truly is the best combination of
everything good BMW has to offer
it has a comfort and luxury of the 7
Series but the performance and handling
of a 3-series both stylish and
performance driven the 5 Series really
is the ideal BMW the interior of the
2011 550 I really didn’t see that many
changes this year they simplify the dash
making it much more streamlined and they
change the position of the iDrive knob
putting it in a much better place for
your hand while you’re driving but
otherwise it pretty much stayed the same
which is great because BMW – is already
so well placed the 550 I is of course
tricked out with all the latest luxury
amenities from a rear entertainment
package that has two screens and their
own controller plus three auxiliary
ports and USB hookup the car also
features a really nifty massaging seat
in the front driver and passenger seats
driving the 550i is pretty fantastic
it’s equipped with a twin turbo v8 that
pushes out 400 horsepower and 450 pound
foot of torque and it’s rear-wheel drive
unless you get the X Drive which then of
course gives you all wheel drive this is
unlike any other automatic I’ve driven
before the power is almost instant and
it could actually get you in a bit of
trouble if you’re not careful you almost
have to look to three moves ahead if
you’re going to stamp on the throttle
because it has such a grunt in such
power it just takes off
the 550i model we’re driving is almost
fully loaded with the lane departure
warning head-up display blind spot
warning system and laser-guided cruise
control that will brake and accelerate
for you what’s nice about the 550i is
you can play around at the chassis and
drivetrain changing it from normal to
comfort to sport or to Sport Plus
depending on how you want to drive the
car for the first time in 2011 BMW now
has a park assistant equipped in its
vehicles what this does is it finds you
a parking spot and then puts you in it
without you touching the steering you
know someone’s a vehicle of stuff and
you found a parking spot it’s going to
tell you to select the reverse gear and
then take your hands off the steering
wheel this is highly unnatural feels a
bit odd when you’re doing it but here
goes you’re in control of the braking
while the car is moving you can watch on
the screen your progress it’s very
strange to not touch the steering wheel
you kind of panic a little bit it also
comes extremely close to the cars that
is parking between the park job that you
could never do on your own and you see
the car it’s going to give it close to
the curb slap it into drive steering a
little adjust
cars to best set it back into reverse
there and you have
see perfect parallel park since designer
Chris Bengal left BMW the cars have been
decidedly deep angled by series in
particular now has a lot more
personality in the front hood the sides
are a lot less angular and the back end
is almost rounded now
