An Interview with Last Comic Standing Alum, DeAnne Smith

I’d like to talk about the haircut a SKU
parrot I made a poor decision I was
walking by a bike shop they had a sign
in the window that said lesbian haircuts
$15 the bike shop is called revolution
and it’s like a women-owned bike shop so
you could tell that this is this is what
they’re doing in there is lesbian
haircut so I was like okay I’m a lesbian
I could use a haircut but they really
meant like lesbian haircuts like you’re
gonna leave here gayer than when you
came in I got kind of bullied into it to
tell you the truth by like friends or
like by Dan because I was like yeah I
just want my hair like like it was but a
little bit shorter and they’re like like
it was are you sure
really you know like maybe not just do
whatever you want
hi I’m John Hastings and welcome to
watchmojo.com we’re sitting down to a
game of Clue with Last Comic Standing
this be Anne Smith welcome to the show
thank you how are you doing all right so
how did you get into comedy B I went to
an open mic like you’re supposed to do
you go to an open mic you suck you get
scared and then you just decide you like
the abuse and you keep going back what
led you to start doing stand-up was it
like you wanted to get into show
business you wanted to make jokes it was
basically like honestly just to move to
a compensate for a really shitty
childhood laughter out of pain exactly
that’s an amazing story is it oh we’re
being a woman in stand-up which is very
much macmail filled and there seems to
be a lot of stigma around women being
comics I get introduced a lot like the
next comedian is a lady you know I would
have a vagina and also be talking so
that’s the only thing that kind of
drives me crazy why did you choose to
base yourself in Montreal as a comedian
and not say in the States
yeah or somewhere else the real reason
that I came to Montreal is because I was
in love with a mine we lived in Mexico
together and mime school exists only in
Montreal and in California and in Paris
she was like I’m going to mime school
and I was like I’ll go with you and then
so this is where I started my comedy
career okay so I have a I have another
girlfriend and
she’s also going to mime school like our
mimes my type because it sounds like it
won’t like a strong silent type himself
white and stripy t-shirt I like girls
who like are really into pretending it’s
a lot windier than it really is
so you so you recently did the Just for
Laughs festival in Montreal how was that
experience I got to work with Kathleen
Madigan who I love and um she was
hosting the show and I was all nervous
backstage this is my favorite thing that
she said she goes look this is your
career right you’re gonna be doing this
for like thirty years right if you bomb
out there nothing’s gonna happen if you
kill out there nothing’s gonna happen
this is comedy nothing happens that was
it and I have taken that with me and now
like every show I do it’s like oh yeah
it’s just one more night it doesn’t
really matter
