Как волонтеры создают открытую карту мира | Юрий Мельничек | TEDxNiamiha

Translator: Kristina Ionauskaite Editor: Olga Mansurova
Eight years ago, I first discovered on her smartphone e-cards.
And how do you think the first thing I began to look for there?
Of course, your house.
And I was just annoyed by the fact that not only do I not find my house,
and all my homeland of Belarus was represented by two road maps:
Ring around the capital and the main highway.
According to this map do not get there even from the capital of the second largest city in the country.
In fact, there were already excellent detailed maps of Belarus
and many other countries.
And around that time I met with OpenStreetMap community.
This community, which makes a free map of the world.
Free, first, because these data
It is completely free – free – use even for commercial purposes.
Free and also because in some countries
amateur cartography, unlicensed,
It is a criminal offense.
And it does not stop volunteers community
from being able to develop the project.
As well as free, because you are also free
join the OpenStreetMap and add something to the card.
But you ask, well, if anyone can go to the map
and add anything, then how to deal with vandalism,
with jokers, which are added to the map that is unknown?
Is there such? And how can we trust this map?
Here we have the support of Linus’s Law, formulated
more in the development of the Linux operating system:
“When a sufficient number of eyes watching,
all the bugs come to light. “
This means that when a lot of people look at a map,
all the errors there are, sooner or later, and can be corrected.
And very often, in the same way as in “Wikipedia”
OpenStreetMap maps information becomes
more relevant and more reliable due to the fact that all Community
checks the available information there.
Oh well.
The maps were excellent, but I was immediately faced with another problem.
They were not very comfortable to use, because the card Well, it is usually necessary
traveling, for example, and very often there is no Internet.
Accordingly, you can not access the site and see the map.
And I thought, but it would be nice to be able to
map download directly to your mobile and even if there is no Internet,
In order to build the route by car or on foot,
look for GPS, where you are and what’s around you.
I’m a programmer myself, I decided: I will gather friends, programmers,
and we will write an interface to make these excellent data
accessible to ordinary people.
And so there was MAPS.ME.
We initially started to do the project for themselves,
then for our compatriots, but we were surprised to find,
that the cards are becoming popular all over the world:
in South America, Africa, Australia and Asia.
People everywhere are starting to use them.
We are even surprised to learn at some point,
that we have the most user where you would think?
From the Philippines!
A country that our globe is on the back of our hand,
where one of us was not, and perhaps even never will be,
and we do not know the local culture and customs.
We thought: why did this happen?
Why is our country was represented on a map two roads?
Well, it is clear why.
Because to make a global map – it is very expensive.
Because companies have to be from pieces of different countries,
purchase data, to the global map.
And our country is on the priority list
It was somewhere low.
And it turned out that those countries in the list of priorities more
than developed countries, and lived there more people.
And OpenStreetMap community literally helps
people from developing countries to put their country on the world map.
And yet it is important to understand that for many people,
it is not easy to have tourists do not get lost there.
This is an opportunity emergency or rescue services to drive.
This is an opportunity to begin the work of taxi service or delivery services,
who also need maps.
And yet there are a curious cases.
Once a user has sent us our photos.
He went on a tourist trip to a desert island.
So he landed on the island, opens the card.
And what do you think he saw?
He saw a marked-card perfect desert island.
And, despite the fact that there are people of no one lives,
there live a lot of animals, and they have worn trails.
And these trails are also marked on the map,
because someone else, volunteer OpenStreetMap community,
I came to this island long before they struck and all data on the card.
That is, there he is, when he arrived there, took care of all those people,
who would go to the desert island then.
And I want you to also take care of all those people,
which then will be where you spend time.
And no need to go to a desert island for this.
Enough when you go to the parents put their house on the map.
Or to map your cottage, your holiday village and pond nearby,
to your same friends can quickly the next time you find your way to the party,
and not, as it was last time.
And sometimes it is even so that even the presence of the card itself
It can save lives.
I recently saw a video where Syrian refugees tell
they literally walk from Syria go to Europe.
And it is very important for them to have a working card,
to get dangerous for them to congregate, to find accommodation,
to even find where to get the border undetected.
Say thank you MAPS.ME, that thanks to you we can
to get to Europe, and to save their lives.
But I want to say that, yes, maps.me role in this was significant,
but much larger role in this community OpenStreetMap
and the volunteers who have made a huge work,
to add all the data on the card.
And this card to help in any situation where it is needed,
We need to do even more gigantic task.
And so we began to think, and all that can be done,
that this work was done.
Well, first of all, of course, we have done our maps free of charge.
Secondly, we turned to the owner of the rights to our product,
in Mail.Ru Group, and they agreed,
despite the fact that they have their own money bought us a project
They laid out the project, its source code publicly available,
under the same license as the OpenStreetMap maps,
that anyone can use the code MAPS.ME
for commercial and non-commercial use.
And we believe that, even if there have MAPS.ME competitor
All OpenStreetMap community on this move only forward.
And yet we think that’s what. See.
Here there are some tasks that are very, very expensive and very complicated
even for the richest companies in the world.
And they may decide to community volunteers.
But there is even more extensive and ambitious goals,
that even community volunteers can not solve.
And we think that’s the problem can solve community volunteers
plus all users of cards put together.
And we’ve added OpenStreetMap map editor directly in MAPS.ME application
so if you do not have cartographic skills,
If you do not like to put something on the map,
so it was very, very simple – to add to the map your favorite cafe.
And you thereby make service cafe owner,
because more tourists will come and leave more money there.
Or you can add to the map, such as a pharmacy.
And then someone who will need medication, be able to find it.
And if the pharmacy is already on the map is, you can add a time of the pharmacy,
that a person can understand it all open now or not,
or phone number so he could call and find out,
and whether there is the necessary medication in the pharmacy.
A friend of mine be mapped just for fun.
It deals transformer rooms all over the world is at stake.
(Laugh)
And maybe it’s not very useful, but it’s a lot of fun,
like collecting something,
just not something physical in the real world,
and collecting something on the map.
So please, right after this speech
open the OpenStreetMap website, or even just MAPS.ME
and put on the map of your favorite places.
And then you take care of someone in the future and make someone’s life a little bit easier.
And someone will take care of you and make a little easier your life.
(Applause)
