thank you for having me my topic is
health is a lifelong investment I
figured if I’m going to speak about
helping Gujarat I should relate to money
right so it was over a decade ago I
walked into the gym which was also my
work and I met a man who changed the
course of my life forever I married him
but come to find out I married the
family too
and that is one of the first lessons you
learn when you marry into an Indian
family it wasn’t long after my marriage
started my father-in-law sat me down and
told me how I needed to go back to
school finish my doctorate practice
medicine and get a real job I told him I
had a real job and I loved it and he
said to me but what am I going to tell
everyone else that you do in the first
year we traveled to India so I could
meet the rest of the family and in that
very first day I went to the club to do
a workout and instead of working out I
ended up teaching a sickness class
instead and it was that day I walked out
of the gym I looked at my husband and
said I am going to help change the
fitness industry in India he told me I
was crazy and I looked at him and said
yes I am crazy
so I spent the next five years traveling
back and forth between America and India
studying the industry here and getting a
really good idea of what trainers knew
and what people thought health and
fitness was and what I discovered very
very quickly was that my profession was
not a highly reputable one but I also
found that people didn’t have a really
good sense of the input and output their
body was capable of this is an amazing
machine we have and people didn’t know
much about it so a few years ago I felt
I was in a really good place where I
understood the industry here I had
learned how to do business here and
packed my life up and move to my body so
I started my life in Gujarat so I am
very very proud and happy that I
actually get to do my talk here today ya
know one of the key things I learned
when talking with the general public
even though they didn’t know a lot about
the input and output one of the biggest
things was most people don’t even know
the definition of fitness yeah so what
I’ve done is I’ve spent a lot of time
going around the country talking about
health fitness and really getting people
to start thinking in a different way now
because my job is not that highly looked
upon still today and while a lot has
changed over the past decade since I
started this mission right
I still get people
say to me so you’re just a trainer are
you yes I am a trainer by definition
right but I am in the profession a
preventative medicine my job is to help
guide and educate you to living a
healthier lifestyle my job is to help
keep you injury and disease free my job
is to help improve the quality of your
life so I am more than just a trainer
and how many people can actually say
they have a job that makes them feel
good about themselves to other people
and affect the people around them
right I have the greatest job in the
world and I don’t feel like I work a
single day of my life
right so my goal today there we go my
goal today is simply to give you a fresh
perspective of how you value your health
okay and while I could talk science
about the most complex amazing machine
we have here today known to man I’m
going to keep it very simple because I
want you to walk out of here really
understanding that you can start
now everywhere I have gone all over this
country I have heard people say trainers
are so expensive where they spent 500 to
800 rupees an hour in smaller cities and
refusing to pay more than 2500 in larger
cities like Mumbai and Delhi yet they’ll
spin the same amount of money drinking
alcohol in eating unhealthy food on a
so the topic of what would you pay for a
trainer got me thinking what have we
changed our perception and looked at our
health as an investment think about it
when we’re children we are taught to
invest in our future to save money
invest in properties businesses
financial market for the security of our
future when we’re older so we’re not
uncomfortable and suffer hardships why
do we not look at our health in that way
so that we can move better
we’re disease-free and pain-free and
have energy when we live out our senior
years improving our quality of life why
do we not look at our health as a
long-term investment rather than use and
abuse it in our younger years leaving it
only something to think about
once disease is set in or the damage is
already done we looked at our health as
an investment think about short and long
term I’ll make it very simple for you
short term investments are riskier right
they can have really big returns but you
can suffer very quick losses now think
about trying to lose weight okay people
turn often to diets diets are like a
short-term investment you can have quick
weight loss but because dieting actually
confuses the body in a way that leads
you onto a path to regain that weight
you lost and possibly even more whereas
long-term investment takes a longer
period of time to make bigger gains
right and are often more secure if we
ate well-balanced meals on a continuous
basis we would be able to sustain our
weight and suffer less damage to the
body now what I want you to do is I want
you to think about a bank account okay
now if you actually took your bank
account and we save and we save our
wealth increases right now if we think
about one day we lose our job and we
have to take and take from our bank
account if we do not do anything about
it right we eventually go broke now take
that same account stop thinking money
okay and let’s start thinking healthy
choices as we fill up that health wealth
and let it blossom and become healthy
and strong and have energy and feel
great
what do you think will happen if you
stop making those healthy choices you
become more and more depleted until one
day you break none of us want to be
just why are we not treating our health
the most valuable thing you are will
ever have from the moment that you are
born to the day that you die the one
thing you go in and out with why are we
not looking at it as something to value
to invest in when we look at what we
value the most we often look at our
families especially in Indian culture
but we often then sacrifice our own
well-being in order to give what we
think
is most important for our children it is
there where the vicious cycle actually
begins it is that transition from
childhood to adulthood where we are
taught that we have to stop investing in
our own health but the problem with that
is if we stop investing with our health
we’re teaching our children does not
invest in their health now how many of
you and I know everyone’s usually really
shy how many of you know someone with
diabetes raise your hand yeah how many
would keep your hands up now how many of
you know someone with heart disease yeah
yeah yeah that’s quite a bit and I’m
sure everyone else with your hands down
you do know someone 85% of children will
live the same life styles that you bring
them up in if you do not invest in your
health you were essentially teaching
your children how to have preventable
diseases and how many of you want to see
your child on the bedside none of you I
know everyone will be like why are you
even saying that I know it’s a terrible
thing right but it’s the truth it’s the
hard truth do you want to know the
secret sauce do you want to know how
simple it is to invest in your health I
am a trainer I have not had owned a gym
membership in 15 years
I eat Indian food breakfast lunch and
dinner every day I am home so I will
argue with anyone who says they cannot
do this I managed to work out every day
and Indian food is one of the most
conscious living now you might wonder
what that even means let me simplify it
for you it’s a beautiful 4 step cycle
every one of you in here can easily do
it start with responsibility that means
there are no excuses no excuses
whatsoever we are responsible for paying
bills we take responsibility for our
jobs we take responsibility for a lot of
things in life but what is more
important than this so you stop making
excuses
get your head out of the sand and the
two major next things are moderation
what I mean by moderation I’m going to
relate it to nutrition we have the
greatest cuisine in the world and I will
tell you I ate Gujarati food for two
years straight and I loved it
ok I love it we do not have to eat like
it is our last meal every day guess what
we get to get up tomorrow and do it
again three more times
sometimes more right so moderation you
get to have it again and again that’s
the great thing so irresponsible
moderation move now I also know here
that a lot of people used to joke with
me well it’s so hard to get out and
exercise and move well let me tell you
our bodies were made to move that’s how
it works so in order for us to be
responsible we need to move you have to
stop be taking excuses and do it you
make that time I guarantee you everyone
in here wastes at least five minutes a
day probably
teen or more every little bit counts and
what happens when you start taking
responsibility and you eat in moderation
and you move you create habits and good
habits and guess what good habits make
it easy for you to be responsible to eat
well move and the cycle continues now
I’ll tell you that a few months ago I
freaked out about turning 40 okay and so
I decided I would take out the largest
health insurance policy India had
because I got worried and I figured at
40 something’s going to be off but you
know what I started investing in my
health wealth at the age of four I
started in sports and I didn’t stop from
there okay and guess what when that 25
page report came back to me every single
reading was in perfect range I’ve spent
my entire life dedicated to being
responsible for this okay but the most
important thing and the most rewarding
thing to me is because of their actions
and responsibilities I have taken in
investing in my own health the lives
that it is touched and changed not just
here in India but I’ve been able to
present and teach all around the world
but the thing is is here we live in a
country that is going down a very
slippery slope very slippery slope being
sick and ill and I would hope that we
can learn from my old country where
everyone got fat for that decade and a
half and got really sick let’s open our
eyes
let’s take responsibility and start
investing in your own health
so now you can start changing the lives
your life but also those around you and
it’s really something that is important
that you have to take responsibility for
now because if our children do not learn
it they are going to be more sick more
disease than what our generations are
experiencing now so I hope that you can
start thinking of your health as an
investment and not a financial burden or
an excuse thank you now I was over here
speaking and I do want to first of all
thank the University and use students
personally for the amazing job you have
done and and all the universities that I
have gone to and spoken at schools
throughout the country I am so excited
to see a school like this
who gives kids and you still are kids I
can say that I’m old enough to be your
mom’s now but I am so excited to see you
guys having an opportunity for an
education to actually follow your heart
and study what you want and it’s a
beautiful beautiful thing so you should
applaud yourselves for the excellent
work you guys did it’s so beautiful to
see and please keep following what you’re doing and you were wonderful
