so this is my first time um yeah I’m
really really excited to be here Tommy
people are from Honda here and if you’re
asked to identify do you think that the
first thing you say I’m Colombian
probably maybe how many of you identify
as Hispanic all my fun so let’s not all
of you but it took a while to get there
the weird thing about being a 99 in the
US who’s been a kind of nothing Aubrey’s
pretty pretty interchangeably is that
it’s like the first thing that people
will know about me even though both my
parents are from Argentina I was born in
New York but almost always the way that
would be identified in the u.s. if you
come from spanish-speaking country is I
thought you know or Hispanic but the
term Hispanic didn’t actually exist
officially in the u.s. until nineteen
productivity and it was actually like an
invention if you look at the the
definition of Hispanic
if literally is in reference to the u.s.
spanish-speaking personally especially
one of Latin American living in the US
and the reason that it was became
official the seventies is it was the
first time that people asked for a house
to be census to identify that way and so
there were all these promotional ads put
out asking people to identify themselves
as they came from spanish-speaking
countries as aesthetic
hola soy Frank Radice angeles rams l

hola so if anywhere they’ll see how the

but the question is why did they be the
white lace field is need to create the
category of Hispanic I mean a lot of
Colombians might not relate so the
experience of an Argentinian saying they
might not really to experience of a
Puerto Rican
so why this need to unite all of the
people from Latin America as a single
group within the Census and the answer
is that there were two groups that Lily
bought me for this one was activists who
wanted to go to the government and say
listen we have so many thousand Spanish
speakers in California
that need help with bilingual education
we need nurses and hospitals that speak
Spanish and we would really like our
numbers to count on the government to
know that these needs have to be met the
second group was people who are looking
to make commercial money off of the that
you know community so in 1960 Univision
BBC on started and they wanted to people
to go to coca-cola or some other big
company and say hey there are this many
million Spanish speakers in the US we
have this huge market that only we have
here you should put your ass on our
station and it works
the US Census started counting how many
Hispanics are in the US and it was an
incredibly powerful tool to show that
there are high numbers of Spanish
speakers within the United States but by
the same token and that that new
identity was created within the US to
empower and to for people to advocate it
was it can also be used in some sort of
problematic
so Donald J Trump claims that he loves
Hispanics this picture is offensive for
so many reasons mainly because I don’t
know if you’ve ever been to Mexico but
like there are no taco bowls that is
another weird American invention but
Trump started his election speaking
along about with happy felt the Hispanic
community acted within the United States
so this video when Mexico sends its
people they’re not sending their best
they’re not sending you they’re not
sending you they’re sending people that
have lots of problems and they’re
bringing those problems with us they’re
bringing drugs they’re bringing crime
they’re rapists and some I assume are
good people so this literally the speech
that he announced that he was running
for president or and in the same speech
he took it upon himself to categorize
all Mexicans as drug dealers rapists and
son for good people and I have to admit
that after he won with this rhetoric I
had sort of a crisis in face so I would
first out with radio so it’s on the it’s
a national show on public radio that’s
called that in USA they tell us the
stories of the teams in the United
States and I always thought about my job
as like elevating the voices of people
in the country who often Horne portrayed
the media but I worried that by focusing
specifically on that female stories or
Hispanic stories I was also making them
an easy target you know when you take an
entire group and you lump them into one
category it’s also a lot easier to
discriminate against them and so I
looked myself even okay that I’m telling
that kino stories and I thought a lot
about it and I think that now more than
ever is the time where we should be
telling that you know
and it’s because the way which they’re
being portrayed around the media by
people like Trump provides zero context
and is such an incomplete narrative of
what it actually means to be the keynote
he’s describing these drug-dealing
rapist immigrants the most recent story
I did a group of people who crossed
illegally into the United States is
about these poor guys this is Kelvin and
Sao Kevin and I’m swinging and they’re
from inside by the Odom and the reading
list was considered these like for
skateboard dudes who just want like ride
their skateboards but they would go out
and all these different games really
wanted to recruit them and they didn’t
feel safe and they want it to be in a
place where they can do their hockey
without any fear for their lives and so
I actually didn’t meet these guys I
worked with a freelancer which is
something I do very often in Mexico who
told me that he was walking down the
street and these like for guys like zoom
down the mountain on their skateboard I
had already finished like five different
countries and in each country they would
make new friends and they create like a
larger to skateboard Network to get to
the border a couple of them are actually
living in the US now but I think that
it’s really important that we tell
stories that show like what you imagined
to be the typical immigrant isn’t
necessarily always true one of the games
that they were escaping from its ms-13 –
I got some job and what a lot of people
don’t know about my brother Jack is that
there was no ms-13 in Central America
until a lot of Central American migrants
who had ended up in the American prison
system in Los Angeles formed the gang in
the prison and then they were deported
back started recruiting people within
Central America I mean ms-13 is an
American like a u.s. born gang and so
one other things that Trump has been
doing is he’s been going to a lot of
different cities and talking about how
ms-13 is corroding cities and ruining
people’s lives and that when in
actuality no one talks about how it’s an
american-born gang similarly the number
one victim of ms-13 within the u.s. is
other migrants who are afraid of
deportation so they don’t go to the
police they don’t
detection they’re terrified and so I
think it’s important to be telling these
stories you have the leaders of the
three worlds talking about a group in
mass he called the people in ms-13
animals I think it is our responsibility
as journalists especially as the theme
of journalists to tell those stories to
give context and the same can be said
not just the venting else was in the US
but of the way that the u.s. speaks
about places in Latin America so I think
the number one thing that people in the
u.s. know Buffalo Mia is probably the
story of the popular spot and there’s a
lot of the main categorization of this
country has been in the country with
drugs and all that but what maybe a lot
of people that you guys don’t know is
that the most famous Colombian right now
is probably this guy you know what
happened to Jake and his cousin so crazy
and J Bhabha bombers who also are not
possible Colombia is refer to these
amazing stories all evening you know we
have people were inventing things for
people with disabilities you know
amazing scientists I come from Colombia
why aren’t those stories being told in
the United States and so that’s why I
find the work that I do so important
because I want to illuminate those
narratives and tell more complete story
of what it means to be let me know if
we’re gonna have this term like in
Spanish that’s very problematic where
you’re looking you know people Mexico is
that HSN people in Argentina and bananas
and they talk very differently and they
don’t really have that much in common if
we’re going to have this entire lung to
prove together then we need to tell as
many stories as possible so that doesn’t
also get used as an excuse to
discriminate against group of people so
I know a lot of people if you’re really
young if you’re at all interested and
telling stories if you love having
people talk to you which is my favorite
part of my job I highly encourage you to
consider becoming a journalist and to
tell the most complete and complex that
you just
you possibly can in today’s political
climate it’s more important than ever
