We Need to Do Better | Dr. Paul Miller | TEDxAlbany

[Applause]
my name is dr. Paul Miller I am the
current CEO and principal of Green Tech
High we are charter school in Albany New
York today I’m gonna discuss my topic
that I frequently discuss on how we all
need to do better we need to make a
conscious effort to do better we need to
work to change the mindset of children
and we can do that through family
community and education you see a man in
a suit it looks like I made it
sometimes I even feel safe sometimes I
feel elated
just because I’m dressed to impress
doesn’t mean that I can’t be depressed
depressed because my brother next to me
in the Tim’s and the fitted often feels
like his life was omitted we live in
this country that’s the land of the free
with all the riches and so many
opportunities yet many of my brothers
feel like they can’t get ahead yeah we
create our own misery with our thoughts
and our actions you might even say what
about affirmative action you throw us
crumbs like we’re homeless bums
and don’t acknowledge but still expect
us to go to college we can commit the
same crimes and get four times the time
you might say don’t commit the crime I
say you’re right but it’s a privilege to
be white you understand the rules to the
game however poverty and slavery a lot
to blame
I’m so angry because you’re all up here
judging me I’m so angry because I’m sad
because I grew up without a dad I didn’t
have what I know what I wanted nor what
I needed I had to go without or hustle
to figure it out yeah I did some dirt
I’ve been through a lot of pain and a
lot of hurt my pain runs deep but I was
taught not to be weak say weakness in my
hood will make you unsafe did any of
your kids have to sleep next to the trap
gate so when I remove this shirt and tie
do you still think I’m such a good guy
what about the tattoos in the branch or
how about when I look like this in the
summer time and I’m driving my $80,000
car do you turn and tap your wife and
say look how far he overcame or do you
just shake your head and pull me over
because I look like I’m carrying cane
excuse me sir you failed to change lanes
you’re driving in the passing lane oh
you’re the CEO I’m gonna let you go see
I earn that title blood sweat and tears
and years of facing all my fears if I
can do it so can you
I do what I do so our kids can too
see we are not statistics anymore
we are graduates and bosses but that
takes a mindset that takes a mindset a
mindset of elev Frederick Douglas once
said that knowledge makes a man unfit to
be a slave so yes we don’t have physical
slavery here in the United States
anymore however we have mental slavery
so as I explained to you
I run a charter high school the charter
high school that I run clicker the
charter school the charter high school
that I run is comprised of 97%
african-american males we have over 87
percent poverty we are in all-boys
school and yet we have a 95 percent
graduation rate we have a hundred
percent acceptance to college and we’ve
had that every year since existence
we’ve been open 10 years and we had last
year we had over 6 million almost 7
million dollars in scholarship money so
why is that what makes us different what
makes us special well what makes us
special is that we build the young men
from inside out and it’s the systems
that we have and then it’s the people
that help pull these systems off so we
couldn’t do it without the good people
but we couldn’t do it without the
systems either our people have to be
resilient and understand the good fight
and understand that there is a history
of mental slavery for our boys and we
have to break that those chains those
psychological trains and we work on it
day in and day out and sometimes it
takes four years to break that mental
slavery however we do it through
building relationships that’s key that’s
first and foremost next it’s our
teaching and learning process third what
it is is that we must use data to inform
our instructional decisions and last but
not least we must hold young men
accountable but we must hold ourselves
accountable so what I’m going to ask
you to do is to hold yourselves
accountable also and think about how you
can continue to build your mindset and
build your muscles so that if you help
yourself you then can help someone else
so this is part of what we teach our
young men we need to help them learn
their identity they need to learn who
they are so they can help someone else
so they have to be able to take their
setbacks and turn them into their setups
they have to take all their excuses and
turn them into their reasons however
until they learn how to do that it is a
difficult process one of the most
important things is that they need to
learn that what they think is how they
act and what they act is how they
attract so your thoughts are things has
anyone in this room ever had the ability
to wake up without using an alarm clock
show of hands anybody so you tell
yourself you know what I need to be up
at 7:00 and you wake up at 655 and you
didn’t set your alarm clock why is that
that’s because your mind is a powerful
thing it’s the biggest muscle that you
have it’s the strongest muscle and we
don’t exercise it enough and we have to
work to change our mindset so if you can
wake up with an alarm clock even though
you worked 16-hour day the day before
and you have to get up and do it again
why can’t you program your mind to do
other things and that’s the same thing
with our young men we have to reprogram
their thoughts but before we can
reprogram their thoughts we have to
understand the mindset that they have
and so you look back into the 1700s when
slave makers especially Willie Lynch
decided to make slaves their goal was to
break the mind and keep the body they
wanted the man to be the worker they
wanted to pull them out of the house to
destroy the family structure and when
you look at it right now I believe one
in every three households and the black
families are two single parents that’s
interesting because the man was pulled
out of the household and people say Oh
slavery doesn’t have anything to do with
that I would say that’s an absolute lie
look at the systemic
affects what also happened was our
differences were used against us our age
our sex our height our color
light-skinned versus dark skin we were
separated we were there was a mistrust
created once this mistrust was created
and we couldn’t trust ourselves who
could we trust the person who was
enslaving us that mindset carried on and
so the woman became frozen ly
independent where she felt like she
didn’t need the black man anymore
because he wasn’t there so she had to do
it on her own and when she did it on her
own which he ended up doing was raising
her daughters and loving her sons what
does that mean so she would raise her
daughter to be a strong independent
woman and she would raise her son to be
nurtured and mentally weak because if he
was mentally weak he was easily broken
there she had less chance of losing him
if he was strong physically he would be
able to survive in the fields or
wherever else so you go up to a young
black man and almost any young black man
learns this from an early age if someone
hits you you hit them back almost any
man learns that at an early age some man
goes to you it comes into your face and
hits you what are you going to do their
reaction is always I’m gonna hit them
back but then you ask them what happens
when life hits you and mentally they’re
not able to prepare or be able to handle
that and so it’s about trying to improve
that mindset and make it stronger by
first identifying where they’re at and
where they need to be but this has
caused learned helplessness this is
called a situation where they feel like
anything that’s in front of them and
that’s their small world that they can’t
do anything about it and obstacle
happens and they say they’re succumb to
that obstacle they don’t aren’t mentally
capable at least they don’t think that
they are to go over it around it or
through it and it beats them so we have
to take this learn helplessness and we
have to identify it and we have to know
that it creates a fixed mindset so what
does a fixed mindset a fixed mindset is
when you don’t see beyond what’s in
front of you
when is it limited to where you are that
you see failure as permanent when you
can’t overcome and you need immediate
gratification I would argue that this is
the softest generation because it’s just
over time and through technology and
everything just is handed to them where
they haven’t had to work on top of the
mindset that they have that they are
soft mentally not necessarily physically
but they are entitled so we have to work
to change that
we have to reverse the curse how do we
do that by identifying the negative
self-talk so if you identify the
negative self-talk permanence that has
to do with time I failed because I’m not
smart pervasiveness has to do with space
so they might say to themselves I failed
because I’m not smart in math and
personalization has to do with character
I’m just stupid now
whether you’re black white or any color
any race we all have this negative
self-talk this happens to all of us but
it’s how you’re programmed and with the
way you’re programmed to be able to
overcome it and nine times out of ten
it’s not your ability it’s your effort
are you willing to do the work are you
willing to put it in and do what it
takes to help you improve if you’ve
studied harder you would probably be
better in math did you know that if you
spend one more hour a day doing
something it will equal to nine forty
hour weeks in a year you mean to tell me
that you can’t be great at something
with nine 40-hour weeks by just giving
up one more hour turn your Excuse into
your reason but that takes your effort
and so to do that we have to start
thinking like a champion we have to
think like winners we have to change our
mindset
you have to be able to see endless
possibilities you have to be able to
take a a deadline for a six thousand
dollar website and you only have six
hundred dollars and you have to say how
do I create this six thousand dollar
website and make sure that it’s as good
if not better without giving up you have
to lean into your fears because running
from it won’t save you and it’s about
progress over perfection it’s about the
process it’s about growing and you know
if you have a championship mindset you
see life as a marathon you don’t see it
as a sprint you’re looking for the long
haul but how do you do that well that’s
why I’m here right so the waggle rule so
I kind of adapted this here you need to
welcome all challenges bring them on you
got something for me let’s go let’s do
it I’m not running from it you have to
anticipate that there will be obstacles
it’s not going everything’s not going to
go smooth your greatness comes from your
effort you have to appreciate criticism
you know sometimes it’s hard to hear but
you need to learn from others and let
others inspire you others inspire you
when you see someone grinding and
working hard you know what instead of
falling back or hating the hey tourism
leave it alone what you need to do they
say you know what I can do that and I’m
gonna do that as good if not better but
I’m gonna do it for myself and I’m gonna
celebrate you along the way so as I
think about this I’m gonna give you all
an exercise to do so this exercise is
going to help build your new habits
rituals and routines because this
doesn’t happen overnight they say it
takes 21 days to build a new habit so it
yeah dr. Miller this sounds good sounds
good the proof is in the pudding because
we’re doing it over four years were able
to rebuild young men’s minds
I believe graduation rates in New York
State has published last four black
males was 37 percent we graduate 95
percent of our young men because we’re
rebuilding their mindset it’s not a
perfect process but we’re always going
to fight because we have a championship
mindset and I’m going to give you some
tidbits on how to improve your mindset
so that you can help someone else so
something we all do you and think about
it you don’t have to answer me but how
many times have you complained today
about something can I get on your
fingers to hold all the hands of if
you’ve complained about something can I
get a thumbs up if anyone’s complaining
about something today okay now that I
have now that I have your honesty and
those of you who don’t want to put your
thumbs up because we’re being recorded a
book called the no complaining rule by
John Gordon it’s it’s helping you to
change your mindset and so this is a
good way to establish new habits rituals
and routines and make your mind stronger
so what I’m gonna ask you to do for 24
hours quit cold-turkey yes it’s hard
it’s difficult see the deep breaths for
24 hours I’m gonna ask you to quit
cold-turkey
like like you were an alcoholic and you
can’t have another drink you may not
complain for the 24 hours if you are
going to agree with me can I get another
thumbs up if you’re willing to try it
everyone thank you see I wasn’t sure
about you in the back there but thank
you I appreciate it
alright so 24 hours no complaining
however when that 24 hours is done
you’re going to want to complain again
it will take a and you need to think
about it’s a process so you want to
think about it in 24 hours and then you
want to look for a week and then a month
and then a year but complaining is
natural and normal so when you want to
complain here’s what I’m going to tell
you to do use the word but okay when you
use the word but we usually think of it
as a negative conjunction or you’re
explaining yourself but in this
situation start to think about things
positively so think about these guys in
the audience so your your wife or
significant other made you wait late oh
honey you made us late again what you
look beautiful today and so I just
thought about it and positive I just
relished the fact that she looks
beautiful today and you know what yeah
we’re a little late but she looks good
all right
so I’m starting to think about it in a
positive manner and a positive
perspective complaining is normal but it
doesn’t have to be your normal so I get
all that yeah yeah yeah where you going
with this so the next thing that I will
tell you is we need to be more
appreciative and this is a mindset you
need to walk around with stop saying I
have to do this and think about it as I
get to do this instead of I have to I
get to so all I have to go to this TED
talk today I really didn’t want to be
here instead of I get to go to this TED
talk today I get to hear all this new
information and people’s brain trust and
wow that was amazing
but you could apply that to almost
anything because we’re all privileged
there’s people who don’t have food
there’s people who can’t walk who can’t
talk who can’t hear who can’t see and
they’re still living life so start
taking your setbacks and turning them
into your setups and if and anytime
there is a complaint because complaining
is still going to happen and we always
have that friend that complains about
everything goodness gracious
they’re probably not going to stop
complaining but if you can get them to
start training their brain to think
about things differently and you can
start with yourself you need to turn
your
plates into solutions so when you take
something that you need to do you need
to turn it into your solution okay so
think about it I’ll run through this so
I started off and I use that example cuz
I’m not I’m not good at math and and so
and I never was really good at math
however but if I studied more I would be
more successful at it and I get to do
math because I want to be able to be
rich one day and I’m gonna need to be
able to count my money you know what but
I need a solution how am I gonna get
there and if I do an extra two hours of
studying a day and I set a block of time
from five to seven that is my solution
I’m gonna put that effort in and I’m
going to work hard and I am going to be
successful successful at this my mindset
will not allow me to fail and if I fail
I’m gonna fall still fighting then get
up and do it again because failure
there’s nothing wrong with failure it’s
very temporary you know what you get up
and you try again but it’s when you
don’t get up and so the process of what
I’m trying to get you to do is improve
your mindset as community members as
parents as educators so that we can then
in turn help others with their mindset I
just so happen to be in a place where I
can help improve young men’s mindset and
so I challenge you to do whatever you
can improve mindsets and it starts with
positive affirmations you know what
positive self-talk let’s reverse the
curse let’s reverse the permanence and
let’s start putting more effort to also
increase your ability thank you
