you
[Music]
[Laughter]
thank you
in our world things often seem much more
complex than they really need to and
sometimes it’s really important to strip
away the confounding layers that conceal
the very simple principles about how
things work for me music is a wonderful
analogy for the world around us so I’m
going to actually strip away those
layers I’m going to create some very
simple music from simple components
music is about creation
it’s about connection it’s about
community and we are all musicians we
can all play music but many people have
this belief that they can’t play music
that they aren’t musicians this belief
is not something we were born with of
course it’s something we were taught and
it’s false because we can all sing we
can all play an instrument and we can
all even make our own musical
I’m going to take this piece of a4 paper
I’m going to take a a former just to
wrap this paper around I’m not going to
use this metal tube it’s just to
actually shape the paper and I’m going
to roll this paper into a tube and it’s
not going to be any tube it’s going to
actually become a clarinet I’m going to
make a clarinet here on stage in the
so I’m just going to grab some sticky
so a clarinet or a modern clarinet seems
quite complex it’s got lots of keys it’s
it looks a bit unfathomable for somebody
who hasn’t played one but basically
again the stripping back the layers it’s
all it is is it’s a tube that is what
the important part is the tube which
contains the vibrating air so it needs a
source to cause the vibration yeah I’m
taking the middle tube out now
and so I’ve just got the paper tube and
I’m going to use a pair of scissors to
cut finger holes so with the tube we
want to be able to change the length of
the tube because the different lengths
give us different notes the longer the
tube the lower the note and so the more
fingers we have down covering finger
holes actually I’ll just grab that again
and cut in here so I’ve got six finger
holes and one thumb hole and now I’m
going to cut back the other way and so
these finger holes in it will allow me
to change the pitch so here’s my tube
with the finger holes okay so what I’m
going to do now wait for it I’m going to
use just this it’s just this is my
I’ll just cut actually cut a little bit
just to make it a little bit easier to
force it in now we see whether it’s
[Applause]
[Music]
[Laughter]
[Music]
[Laughter]
[Music]
[Laughter]
[Music]
[Laughter]
thank you I promised them that I would
clean up the mess that I made before the
next speaker because I’ve got all these
little bits of yellow paper here
actually so I just made that simple tube
and turn it into a clarinet now there
are tubes all around us that I guess we
can use maybe we’ll try these hold on
let’s put this one let’s try this
dustpan so the dustpan has got a handle
and I just the alto saxophone mouthpiece
[Music]
I can’t gonna put that down just for a
little bit because I think what I’d like
to do is it’s just get a bit of a groove
and I’ll bring that back in from my
[Music]
okay I talked before about how we are
all musicians we got 18 volunteers from
the audience
and they’ve just had a few minutes out
the back with me and I’m going to please
ask you to welcome them onto the stage
please a big round of applause for our
volunteers they’ve only had just a few
minutes they’ve never played these
instruments before they’re bringing on
little hand pipes made out of irrigation
pipe we’ve got one group here all the
lights one group here in the middle all
blues and one group here the red here so
they’ve got different pictures the white
is Addie they’re just lengths of
irrigation pipe the blue ones are in and
then the red Satine so let’s see what
[Music]
I’ll let them take over now they don’t
need to dr. Phylis it and enjoy it and
[Music]
please give our pan fighters a huge
welcome I’m sorry welcome thank you take
a bow guys take a bow thanks very much everybody
