hi my name is Stephanie zing if you know
me well hi nice to meet or if you know
me well it’s great seeing you here and
if you don’t know me well hi it’s nice
to meet you now I want you to forget
everything I just said and everything
you know about me see for this talk I
want you to think of it like this I’m
just a person a conduit of my ideas I’m
just a person who has a story to share
so please take a couple of seconds to
forget everything about that you know
about me and let me take you on a
journey journey not about me but about
my words my ideas okay so let’s take a
step back to ancient Greece forget about
Paxton you’re wearing the trendiest
outfit on the block okay so so white JP
off their shoulder robes a laurel wreath
and a leather gladiator sandal okay so
good so you’re walking around Plato’s
Academy of Athens when Aristotle comes
up to you and asks hey loving a new
wreath oak or evergreen no I’m just
kidding he’s actually working on his
Ricci theory in the Nick and McKean
ethics he asks you what a success how is
it achieved see there’s this one big
idea success is a byproduct instead of
focusing on the goal itself we should
focus on the process undergone to
achieve the goal and success will come
by itself naturally build habits that
will constantly improve yourself because
if you’re making an effort to do the
best that you can regularly the results
will be what they should be the set
success is a byproduct of these other
things not the end itself and with that
you’ll be able to gain the self
satisfaction of knowing that you have
done everything that you can do to be
the best person that you can be success
is a continuous journey and is achieved
through building the right mindsets and
habits if you think about it this is
quite obvious in our daily lives
habits the right ones have positive
results because certain laws in human
nature are reciprocal being trustworthy
builds trust keeping promises spells
integrity selflessness build service
kindness builds decency okay so why is
all this important well what it comes
down to is how to live a purposeful life
so all this meaning and happiness
Aristotle calls us eudaimonia and a life
of your ammonia is a life of striving
it’s a life of pushing yourself to
limits and finding success it’s the
happiness you get from achieving
something really difficult instead of
just having it handed to you but all I
figured I’ve ammonia also means that
you’re never done improving and you’re
constantly setting new goals and
developing new muscles it also means
that you’re bound to have
disappointments and failures seoi 59
Monia is in cupcakes and rainbows but it
is a self satisfaction of knowing that
you have done everything you can it’s a
sweet pleasure of singing into the bed
at the end of it very absolutely
exhausting day knowing that you have
accomplished a lot so this is morality
for Aristotle it’s being the best person
you can be
honing your strings while working on
your weaknesses and as Aristotle himself
said we are what we P did what we
repeatedly do excellence then is not an
act but a habit okay so let’s get out of
engine grease we’re back in town 17
urban California I think we can apply
Aristotle’s concepts to our own
definitions of academic success okay so
let me break it to you I don’t care
about college now before you freak out
let me explain so it’s not that I don’t
care about college but rather I believe
in maximizing your potential and doing
the best that you can to be the best
person you can be if you’re continuously
building the right mindset and habits
success should be a byproduct so college
is thus a check point and not an
endpoint and instead of seeing college
as this ultimate goal we should see it
as a nitrile byproduct of our tremendous
growth in hardwork in high school
colleges should admit you based on who
you are not who you think that they want
you to be so my goal has never been to
get into a good college
my focus is greater than that I want to
change the world and we can all leave a
positive impact where we go becoming the
leaders and the innovators of the 21st
century because guess what after we get
into college it’s not a mystical place
where all your problems are solved we
need a stop and pressing colleges
because maybe we’re just afraid that we
won’t have a future that we can brag
about to our friends and have the
stickers on the back of our cars or a
status update on Facebook instead we
need them mindsets the habits the
perspectives building our character to
see who we are and what we can
contribute to this world our world
because ultimately these qualities don’t
just go for high school and college but
it goes for the rest of your life who
you are your destiny and so I think your
character centers around a lot of your
core values so I’m just going to talk
about some of mine
so my first is everything I do must be
purposeful so coming into high school
when you like you although probably
older than me I had this mindset where I
was just going to study and work hard
all the time and get into a good college
and be everyone right but I found myself
often feeling really isolated because I
didn’t I made sure that I did not have
too much fun I had this entire master
plan for college that I was going to
carry out after the first semester I
realized that you do need a balance and
you can have fun you can relax play
games but it has to be purposeful and
intentional and through this you will
learn that success is a byproduct
because we’re just doing what’s right
for us next I learned that everybody
knows what they need to do but not
everybody does what they need to do I
know it sounds really confusing at first
like what am I saying but what I mean is
that there’s three
success and I call this thirds model so
first is planning psychic which is a
conscious decision to decide to change
something
second is execution so taking your plan
and putting into actual steps
third is sustainment which is what I
want to bring attention to today so
sustainment means taking your execution
your steps and instilling them into your
daily life and I think what ultimately
separates successful people from
unsuccessful people is this third factor
that anyone can come up with a plan and
do it for a couple of days but doing it
for the for the rest of high school with
unwavering focus and discipline that’s
the hard part which is what I want to
bring attention to because since I
believe suspects success is a byproduct
we should all focus on building the
habits the sustainment in order to reach
your goals finally I learned to focus on
yourself so when I say this I don’t mean
being excessively egocentric but rather
of just continuously improving yourself
and not comparing yourself to others in
a detrimental way that would hurt
yourself or your own well-being so
forget about that kid who’s taking like
12 AP classes and a perfect SAT score
because ultimately no one knows the
future you can only create it because
you create your reality as you go along
and everything is a choice and in
focusing on yourself we can all learn to
be our own leaders of our own life
because we our life is the only one that
we can control so yes my name is
Stephanie Zeng and I don’t care about
college but at least in the sense that
no I am NOT taking that AP class because
colleges like it and no I’m not doing
that extracurricular because it looks
good on my college application but yes I
do want to change the world and that is
my main focus right now this goal is for
me this goal is for you this goal is for
the world so even if I get into a
prestigious college it’s not because I
made my four years of high school an
audition for college
I never aimed to get into a good college
so just a byproduct of my hard work and
my mindset my habits and even if I don’t
get into a quote/unquote good college I
will still have the self-satisfaction to
knowing that I worked hard and growing
tremendously in high school so again we
have to focus on the mindsets and habits
and success will be a byproduct as
Aristotle described through ammonia this
is a request this is a plea that you yes
you listening in the audience right now
adopted philosophy and change your
approach to high school and college
because ultimately do what you love do
what you like doing your passion be
happy work hard and success will come as
a byproduct not they’re trying to
impress colleges but impressing yourself
in finding who you are and what we want
to contribute to this world because
people are capable at any time in their
lives of doing whatever they dream of as
Carl Marx said so offers philosophers
until now have only interpreted the
world in various ways the point is
however is to change it join me in my
journey to change the world for you and
me we are the world changers of the 21st
century thank you
[Applause]
