Wave effect of bullet | Fernanda Armenta | TEDxBudapestSalon

thank you well anybody who survived
being shot its lucky to be alive
I’m lucky to be alive so in statistics
says in order to survive a bullet there
are three main factors to be considered
the part of the body you get shot the
number of ones and the time between
being shot and arriving to the hospital
or receiving medical assistance I
believe it’s also loved 8:45 p.m.
January 30 2017 I was inside a car on my
way home there was a robbery two cars
behind and a stray bullet came through
the trunk of the car then hit my back
then went all the way through me
collapsed my lung and came out from my
chest the bullet was 2 centimeters from
my heart and millimeters from the main
arteria so the doctors told me it’s a
miracle I’m alive it’s been more more
than one year and a half and I still
remember the feeling of my own warm
blood just spreading all over me so
people keep asking me how does it feel
to get shot or if the recovery was too
painful or how could I manage to wait
the ambulance 30 minutes and only
breathe him with one lung well as I said
before there are many factors that can
change the answer to these questions but
in my case I can say that yes it’s
really painful but the exact moment of
the shot it was that fast that I didn’t
even have time to realize what was going
on
so I just remember that I felt a really
hard hit on my back and then I was
thinking I just got shot but no why I
mean it’s impossible this is not
happening
is just my mind so I looked down at my
sweater and everything was red and the
scariest part was when I realized how
fast your blood can come out from your
body and of course it was really hard to
breathe because my lung was collapsed
and then I said okay this is see this is
this is how I’m going to die and I was
sure this was my last three minutes so
back in Mexico I was a professional
swimmer I was part of the national team
representing Mexico in the Junior World
Championships
I was national champion Central American
champion I was considered the best
female athlete of the years of the year
during three consecutive years and I was
part of the relay holding the national
record for some years so as a top
athlete I’m really into challenge into
pushing your body to the limit into
discipline sacrifice but also about
dreams and about goals so I don’t know
if we have any athlete in the audience
but I will try to explain a little about
the athletes life we are crazy
I remember one time I was going for a
morning training it was 4 a.m. on a
Friday and I ran with my sister in the
door of her house and she was asking me
and with the face and everything she was
asking me what are you doing awake and
then I said I’m going to Train and she
was just laughing and she told me you’re
crazy because she was coming from a
party so being a professional athlete
it’s a lifestyle choice and in order to
be successful you have to keep your body
in high condition all the time you have
to manage your diet you have to wake up
4 a.m. for trainings
you you need hours of hard work high
tolerance to pain you need ambition and
determination and of course you need to
train and train and train and train
again but where does all this motivation
come from I mean how can you find
motivation each and every day to wake up
and to pursuing it a goal so for me the
answer is really simple for me it’s all
about passion we really have to be
passionate for what we’re doing and we
really have to really want it and to
want it badly so I I love sports all my
life I knew I wanted to be an athlete so
I worked for it and I did it
of course my dream was to become an
Olympic swimmer and even though I have
results as an athlete I never qualified
to the Olympic Games so I was feeling
really frustrated and really mad at
myself and I was thinking that life is
not fair with me because I couldn’t get
into my goal but of course being that
close to death really makes you see the
things with a totally different
perspective or at least for me it did
sometimes it’s really bad that we have
to live this hard experience to make us
realize how lucky we are and not only
value the things we have but the people
we have in our lives and in a way I kind
of feel responsible to share this
message with you this message that I
could understand after the accident so
there is no difference between the fight
of winning or losing a race and between
the fight of living or dying and what
I’m trying to say is that in both cases
you have to stick to something
and you have to hold on and to don’t let
it go so for me perseverance is one of
the most important things and in this
time I stick to my family I stick to my
passion and I stick to life and the same
way it happened in sports when you have
a really hard training set or when you
have a really tough rival to beat and
that’s the moment when you realize that
there’s no easy way out and in order to
succeed
you have to fight so the same thing
happened with me but this time it was a
different fight because I was fighting
for my life so eventually it comes this
feeling when you don’t have energy
anymore or when you have to become
mentally strong because your body is not
responding anymore and you just have to
find a way out you just have to make it
happen and sometimes you have to be your
own motivation so three weeks after the
accident
ie returned to the swimming pools two
months after I was in my first race and
as the doctors told me my recovery
wouldn’t have been that fast if I
wouldn’t have been an athlete so here I
have a question for you how easy is to
blow a balloon I think it’s really easy
shouldn’t be hard so one of you some of
you have balloons so we’re gonna try
so it’s really easy right it was no big
deal
well part of my recovery was blowing
hundred balloons by my own to giving out
strength to my lung and I make you I
make you these because sometimes we
don’t realize these small things or we
don’t value these little things in life
until we are not able to do them anymore
I know that life gave me a second
opportunity and what I’m sure about it
is that I’m not going to waste it so I’m
gonna continue to do my passion I just
join a triathlon team and by the way
yesterday was my first race so if I’m
walking a little strange now you know
why it is and I also was the fastest
woman in Balaton crossing the Balaton
this year and I’m gonna continue doing
it even if my people call me crazy but
one of the lessons the life gave me
after this experience is the importance
of investing time in what makes you
happy and the importance of investing
time in what makes you feel alive so for
me my motivation is being alive I really
believe that one of the keys for success
is perseverance so if you really want
something you have to work hard for it
and you have to keep trying because it’s
not always gonna be that easy so after
all this experience gave me more
positive things that negative things
into my life not only to me but also to
the people around me and the community
around me so today I appreciate life
more than ever I enjoy more than small
things in life and I can say that I live
with more passion so if I knew that all
of these would be the wave effects
believe me I will totally live it again
so stop waiting for life to happen and
just start living thank you very much you
