when I was seven I wanted to become a
nurse because I wanted to help save
lives
by age 18 I had no idea what I wanted to
do I definitely did not want to become a
nurse because I was scared of needles
I was also shy and insecure when I was
23 two major things happened to me I
graduated from my master’s degree and at
the same time I got fired from my first
job the one I had managed to keep in
parallel to find my to finance my
studies now I was very confused I did
not particularly like my job I was doing
okay I did not dislike it however I have
to admit that I was not putting in my
best so I made a decision I decided that
from then on I was going to put my best
in everything I was going to do even the
little things when I was 26 I figured
that I was a good communicator in fact I
got a major promotion and became the
youngest senior manager in the
institution I was working for and I was
told that my communication skills had
played a major role in that decision so
I started exploring it I did not have a
clear vision yet but I got involved into
teaching a little bit of coaching and
from then on many unexpected doors
opened that helped me shape my vision
now let me make one thing clear the shy
and insecure girl I used to be she’s
still here buried deep inside she
resurfaces every now and then generally
when I’m sad or when I feel down and
generally when I feel down it helps a
lot
to think about my vision it also helps
to think about the people that inspire
me among the people Diane’s
there’s a young little man a young man
called Giovanni Giovanni is 18 years old
this is Giovanni Giovanni used to sell
me tissues by the roadside at a major
junction in Kinshasa one morning
Giovanni came to me saying he wanted me
to help him with his school fees I did
not know Giovanni well however I liked
his attitude so I decided to help him
and finance his school he’s now two
years down the line
Giovanni graduated he got his a-levels
and he came to me saying I want to
become a doctor not knowing how much
longer I was going to be able to support
him financially I decided to try and
coach him so we sat down for the first
time and for the first time I got to
know him we designed together two step
plan
she won his first going to learn how to
become an electrician so that he can
find a job so that he can take care of
himself and save to go to med school now
Giovanni I’m 100% sure that he will make
it he will become a doctor one day he
had some sort of a plan he knew what he
wanted to become however he did not know
exactly how to get there and now he’s
trying and he is very very focused focus
is something something extremely
important when you’re trying to make a
vision what about you do you have a
vision yet having a vision one guarantee
that you succeed in life but not having
a vision that means that you might not
even stand a chance to be in the
driver’s seat in the journey of your
life so how do we start where do we
start
let’s start with who you are now let’s
say you’re 18 years old you are
crossroads you just finished secondary
school and you need to figure out what
to study just
Giovanni or maybe you do not want to
study at all or let’s say you 23 you
have a job you all care with your job
but what you really want is become an
entrepreneur are you taking steps
towards it or let me guess you are
between 35 and 45 just like me and
you’re going through the famous midlife
crisis
so you’re questioning everything you
have it achieved so far even though
everybody around you says you’re doing
great
you’re questioning everything you have
achieved so far again it’s about vision
you might feel confused now and if you
feel confused then it definitely helps
to know where you’re going to have a
vision it takes passion it takes hard
work it takes time remember that we all
feel confused at some point in time
in fact it even happens many times what
a lifetime so let’s talk about setting a
vision here’s my guide have a vision
that projects into the future it’s about
who you want to be what you want to do
how you want to do it and how you’re
going to get there if you try to set up
a vision for your life you could start
with introspecting step back and analyze
think about your strengths your
weaknesses think about what makes you
strong think about what makes you cry
what makes you grow think about what
makes you sad think about what makes you
thrive own it
second step
you need to focus on your talent you
know we all gifted with some sort of
talent there might be this one thing you
seem to be doing much better than
everyone else around you this is the one
skill you need to focus on you need to
start imagining what you could be doing
with that skill if you would really
really master it so explore it and grow
it
third step visualize project yourself
into the future and think about what you
could be doing if you manage to bring
that skill to the level you want to it’s
about how you impact yourself and the
people around you it’s really important
that you think about how you could be
impacting people around you if it’s just
about you and your skill then it’s not a
vision might be a desire or something
else but it’s not a vision so focus on
that one skill visualize and project
yourself into the future hold on a
second you need to make sure it’s legal
though the last step is about
remembering we need to be flexible with
our vision there are changes in life
things don’t always go out as expected
Giovanni will probably be an electrician
before he can be a doctor and that’s
okay even though it was not part of his
original plan as changes come
opportunities pop up even though they
don’t always look like opportunities at
first but it’s important to see those
opportunities for what they are and take
advantage of them in any case here is
one advice dream big and never ever let
anyone tell you it’s impossible Nelson
Mandela used to say it always seems
impossible until it’s done it always
