when I was at shot like stop
well I guess I’ll just go when I was a
child I’d often play many video games
from bloons tower defense minecraft I
played them all then often I would dream
about these video games I think what
would it be like to be actually inside
the video game inside the reality of the
video game being their first person
experiencing what an avatar the video
game would feel and now I know that’s
possible that’s what the virtual reality
virtual reality by no means is the new
technology was first invented in 1968
and but it has made recent breakthroughs
has allowed it to become a very powerful
new medium for conveying ideas and more
recently the partially because of
virtuality breakthroughs technology has
advanced at a rapid pace in the past few
decades in virtual reality as a result
has become an extremely powerful tool
for connecting to mobile technology that
we have today and with these
technological advancements and in
virtual reality
we’ve have this revolution of connected
mobile technology we have our phones we
have our laptops we have our personal
computers and all these come together to
form the powerful advent of a mobile
connected technology that connects the
user on a very personal level now as a
result I use my phone and my laptop for
a multitude of hours per day I’ve become
connected to it I have all my personal
data stored on them and as a result
these mediums are a very powerful way
for educators to communicate their own
ideas through mobile technology may it
be on social media platforms maybe on
social media platforms such as Instagram
and YouTube and the Mayo and as a result
virtual reality has become integrated
with many of these platforms and empathy
is becoming conveyed through these
platforms and virtual reality is
becoming very powerful as empathy
provides a really good experience for
integrating into schools and educational
curriculums today imagine this empathy
in the past few years has been conveyed
solely through educational platforms and
media that we have so
chicer phones and only provides a single
window into someone else’s life
imagine this a 360 window with virtual
reality where you can stand on the same
ground that other people are standing on
you can hear what they are hearing you
can live their lives as they would live
their lives now as a result empathy has
been very interconnected virtual reality
has become powerful medium for empathy
to be integrated through an empathy in
education is becoming a very real thing
and could be coming as soon as 2020 just
within a few years this is because
virtuality is becoming extremely cheap
to Ford and with headsets like the
Google cardboard that costs around $10
each is becoming a very affordable thing
for schools to have and virtual reality
has reached a global penetration two to
five percent in schools across the world
so it’s coming really fast and schools
are embracing it and probably the
biggest component of integrating virtual
reality into empathy simulations in
schools is the educational material
itself the curriculum and they’re
currently a multitude of organizations
in schools across the world developing
virtual reality empathy simulations
pause the most famous one that many of
you may have heard of are the New York
Times 360 daily videos and what they do
is they simulate virtual reality across
the world they create empathy
simulations from different places for
example you see here they most recently
simulated empathy simulation of a rubble
airstrike in Yemen and they may simulate
people in different countries maybe in
cities like Tokyo even locally they
recently simulated virtuality
of policemen and Flint Michigan and
these all come together to create your
comprehensive a complete way of
simulating empathy and connecting with
it for people around the world
these videos are garnishing tens of
thousands of views every single day and
has proved to be extremely accessible
for getting a taste of what empathy
through virtual reality is like and more
specifically for education a group
called the global.nomads group is
currently developing a VR empathy
curriculum for schools to use and is
become extremely easy to integrate into
curriculums and the curriculum is called
one world many stories the premise
behind their curriculum is very similar
to what the New York Times is doing that
or they’re solely simulating the empathy
lives of other students around the world
so when the end user K through 12
students use these simulations in school
they establish a very tight and
close-knit connection to the empathy and
the students inside the virtual reality
simulations and this really allows them
to gain nuanced understanding of what
exactly their lives were like compared
to their own and virtual reality is
being proven to be extremely effective
in education studies currently being
shown by the Stanford virtual humans
interactions lab and they’re mainly
studying how virtual reality actually
impacts the lives of students when it’s
used to simulate empathy and one case
study showed was that they simulated
students in avatars people of other
races and after they went to the
simulation they scored much better on
some control ratios bias bias tests
another case study use where they put
students through simulations of 70 to 80
year-old people and after the
simulations they’re much more likely to
invest in the retirement fund that
before and my own educational a tech
startup realism is also looking to
incorporate element of empathy into our
solutions even though we currently only
develop which reality science labs
they’re more subtle ways that we can
integrate virtual reality and empathy
into our solutions in one way that we’ve
done this is provide a story background
behind every one of our science
education labs and what happens here is
that we can enter
great stories and very many case Pacific
stories of different people maybe a
homeless man or someone participating in
a crime scene students can gain a very
specific understanding of these specific
case solutions for empathy and as a
result virtual reality has experienced
explosive growth in the past three to
four years it’s proven to be a
game-changing medium for different
industries this novel form of media is
ready affecting the countless lives the
people across the world is proven to be
a real game-changer in education the
theis close-knit connection it’s built
with empathy will make empathy and
change the ways conveyed for the years
to come thank you
