Unlocking the Riches of the Deep Blue | Sturla Henriksen | TEDxOsloSalon

[Applause]
it is paradox isn’t it that we know more
about the surface of the Moon than the
seabed of our own planet now this is
about to change it is about to change
the keys because we need the oceans more
than ever to ensure food health and
prosperity for growing world population
it is about to change because we need
the oceans more than ever to combat
global warming in my life I’ve come to
see these things from two quite
different perspectives as a scuba diver
instructor I’ve seen the urgent need to
better manage and preserve this
fascinating and fragile underwater world
as a maritime executive I’ve seen how
ocean technology and new innovations can
unlock the riches of the deep blue to
the benefit of society at large to the
benefits of coming generations is
butthole is the act carefully and
responsibly tonight I would like to
share with you some of these
perspectives by inviting you all for
diving let’s imagine that we were to get
up put on our dime masks and jump into
the sea for tour to explore the
opportunities or the great ocean space
as we will leave the surface and this
sound into the blue would heal the air
bubbles from a be reading device it
would get dimmer darker and colder we
would feel prayer in our ears increasing
our first stop would be the ocean food
store for global population expected to
grow by 2 billion people over the next
few decades we need to produce more food
healthier food and food with a much
lighter environmental footprint we can
sense the oceans capacity to meet these
needs as well drifting across large
fields of nutritious and vitamin dance
seaweed accompanied by huge schools of
fish and adding big time to this
capacity our new concepts for ocean fish
farming today Chinese and the region
companies are building fish farms the
size of the Olympic Stadium in Beijing
swimming in each of these farms will be
no less than 25 million means a year
safe from Salman that’s 25 million
healthy meals I 25 million meals with a
much lighter environmentally print with
a fraction of the co2 emissions compared
to novice further and these ocean farms
they will be anchored far from coast
they will be submerged in the ocean they
will not claim precious land nor will
they be affected by the heavy rain the
flooding the heat waves and the drought
which is increasingly threatening crops
on live stocks online now leaving the
ocean food store and continuing our die
they’re passing by this large coral reef
and we can see it’s magnificent colors
visibly fading from
ocean acidification and for me and that
is a reminder to us are the consequences
of pollution and climate change even
down here deep down below the ocean
surface a next stop would be what I
think is one of the most fascinating
places down here that is the ocean
pharmacy oceans are home to nutrient
cycles and gene sequences from nowhere
else on this planet simply to survive
down here many species have to adapt to
extreme combinations of darkness
pressure salinity and cold you know
1,000 meters depth these pieces are
enduring an atmospheric pressure
equivalent to that of to grow elephants
standing on the palm of your hand and
it’s exactly this hardness that makes
them so attracted to do scientists
and already today we’re using rare can
rare chemical compounds and unusual gene
sequences to produce medicines for
curing cancer Alzheimer or asthma
leaving the ocean pharmacy and
continuing down we will eventually end
up a toshiba with fields valleys and
mountains but seen it is in the dark
deep down here in the rock structures
that we find the ocean of mines in them
a minerals and metals that we use in
modern devices like your laptops flat
screens and electric vehicles
in your smartphone alone that will
typically be more than 50 different
metals and minerals you know Neil
Diamond for instance is used to make a
phone vibrate when you receive a call
terbium is used to produce colors on
your touchscreen and as millions and
millions people are listed out of
poverty and into the global middle class
demand for such high tech products you
continue to increase and so will a
strain on land-based mining but now we
can tap these resources from the sea
floor and these operations are pretty
advanced stuff so let me give you an
idea for what we are doing already today
in my jail a vessel laying in the middle
of the Pacific Ocean say off the coast
of Hawaii it has no anchoring of fixing
to the seabed strong winds gusting and
high waves breaking is kept firmly in
position but Vance navigation and propel
assistance now imagine this vessel
lowering a thin slim drilling string
deep down through the water until it
hits the seabed from there it continues
through complex geological structures to
make a sharp turn and advanced several
miles horizontally to find a small
pocket in the ground and from this
pocket it can extract platinum or
palladium now this technology is so
advanced that NASA the u.s. space agency
recently ventured into cooperation with
subsea companies
of how to drill on the planet Mars so
outer space meets ocean space that is
quite fascinating isn’t it but more
important is that done being a
responsible and proper way these kind of
activities from siebel money can be
performed with less sidle and
environmental costs then if they were to
be further expanded on shore now leaving
the ocean mines and drifting further
across the sea floor we will soon arrive
at our final destination down here in a
deep blue that would be the ocean power
count now under the seabed a vast
process oil and gas but fossil fuels are
harmful to the environment and they will
be gradually spaced out over time it’s a
much more important for the future and
much more important for society will be
the capacity of the oceans to serve as a
global battery deep down here we can
sense the memos forces or the oceans we
can feel every little movement of the
water and now technology allows us to
try to convert this energy from currents
tidal water from waves and surface winds
and transform them into emission-free
renewable energy to certain needs and
demands of a growing world population in
particular the capacity o offer will
farming has rocketed of a recent year
and today windmill engineering is one of
the fastest growing professions
the world now by now we would have spent
so much time underwater that we would
probably be running low on air so it’s
time to start our sins now as they are
following the air bubbles playful moves
upwards we can feel it getting brighter
it’s getting warmer we can see rays of
Sun piercing through the water and we
can see the shadows of boats in the
distance above us ascending we might
have to negotiate our way through large
feel the waste drifting on the scene it
is a sad fact but if we continue like
this within the next 30 years there will
be more plastic than fish in the oceans
as we surface from my dive we fled our
vest and stay flirt to wait for a dive
boat to pick us up and as we remove our
masks we can see large vessels traveling
the horizon on the ocean highways ninety
percent of all international trader good
is tied by burt ships and these ships
shall have to reduce their emissions
going forward already today there are
full electric battery driven vessels in
operation and going forward we’ll be
seeing more green vessels traveling the
blue oceans going forward we will also
see more ships in regional
transportation because the oceans and
the ocean highways need no construction
work they need no maintenance and they
cause no traffic jams now when I
presented the you here tonight are real
infeasible opportunities they are other
hands
if we are about to unlock reaches of the
deep blue a companies and business is
already moving to take advantage and
that is basically a good thing because
we need industrial competence
investments and innovations to explore
and develop ocean opportunities but
oceans are our most important global
common so the more important a crucial
question is how do we make sure that
these opportunities are developed to the
benefit of the many not just to the
benefit or the money let me conclude by
suggesting two lines of action that I
think would be necessary to chill this
firstly there is an urgent need for
stricter regulation and better
cooperation on the oceans the oceans are
weakly managed and fully going there no
man’s land no one answer no one on sun
and very few seem to care much about
them secondly in order to better manage
and go in the oceans we need to know
more about them today only five percent
of the sea floor is mapped in any detail
ninety-five percent is not a recent
international research project found
that every second specimen collected
from abyssal waters deeper than 3,000
meters was new to science we can only
imagine what is yet to be discovered
down there so
next time you’re going to the beach the
next time you’re enjoying a beautiful
moon mirroring of the ocean surface you
wish you may wish to give a thought to
the products but we still know more
about the surface of the moon and the
seabed of our own planet thank [Applause]
