in costa rica we just passed the
national elections where we choose to
our president number 48
but it was a long election
complex
even distressing some would say that
it was a deranged choice
but beyond the result is very
important that we reflect on what
what happened during the process
the news of the elections in our
small country went around the world
because it was a positive example of a
new policy that is emerging
the new policy is one where the
power is distributed and it is possible
thanks to the technologies of
digital communication that nowadays
turn into an action tool
policy and allow us to each and every
one of us make a difference
real
never before in the history of the
humanity had had so much power the
civil society through tools
as concrete as social networks
politics is all that has to do
with the decisions that are made about the
common good and about our rules of
coexistence
but above all it has to do with who
make those decisions
and throughout history the beings
humans we have debated in struggles of
power to decide who takes those
decisions
and from ancient Greece
citizens could choose their
representatives in the government
but it turns out that being a citizen was something
very exclusive because for example the
women, people with disabilities or
the slaves were not considered
citizens with the ability to choose
its rulers
today after centuries of struggles
the citizens in the republics
democratic we can choose our
government but we are still far away
to be able to have a real
representativeness this means that no
There is enough diversity in politics
around the world we see the struggles of
who believe in democracy
participatory versus demagoguery
populist
but we also have examples of this
new policy that are very positive
some years ago we could see in the
newspapers about the so-called spring in
Middle East
what we saw was like hundreds of
young people were summoned by means of
social networks and took to the streets to
protest against electoral fraud at
unemployment to the lack of respect for
human rights in yemen
these movements had an effect
dominated in the rest of the Arab countries
contributing and influencing even the
dismissal of some rulers in
those countries and helping a revolution
democratic in that region
more recently we saw in Guatemala a
neighboring country as well as a movement
of youth emerged to do action
civic politics and what we saw were
peaceful marches in the streets that
they even influenced the resignation of
now former president of that country
everything happened through marches that
they were convened through networks
social, which shows us the change
of paradigm that we are living
in costa rica in the recent election
we also have an example of action
politics
a political movement of
youths that also determined the
result of the presidential election
without a doubt of name coalition
Costa Rica
overnight a group of
young people decided to join and organize a
Massive call through networks
social
this and the other examples that
I mentioned they were also so successful and
so effective precisely because
they managed to have an impact beyond the
digital sphere
of course there are still huge
political challenges in Central America and in
middle east and around the entire
world but it is also true that we are
seeing the emergence of conditions for
a new political era
it’s a new era that allows me to be
here today
and a person like me a woman
relatively young psychologist
enterprising
and I can tell you that in the past
campaign I participated as a candidate to the
vice president of the republic
and even though my party lost in
first round the truth is that the
politics is not only to win but to
help build a better society in
our country
and participating in the campaign allowed me
raise your voice on topics that seem to me
very important in our country as per
example think about economic development and
social on the basis of respect for
human rights
required of me much commitment
but above all believe me as we say the
Boys
and above all I learned that to be in
policy what is needed is to have
clear and coherent ideas and principles
everything else has to be built
from that
the other thing my participation allowed me
in the campaign was to reaffirm my
conviction that more are needed
women in the politics of the country and of
world
[Music]
we are very necessary in those spaces
where decisions are made more
important for all and all
however these images that
circulated some time ago on the internet
they show us how still around the
world
we still have very few women in
those chairs where you take those
important decisions here we see by
example emma watson
hillary clinton
angela merkel
and a parliamentary democracy group
representative does not work if it does not embrace
inclusion and diversity all was the
geographical diversity of ethnic
gender and so on
the women themselves are pretty
different from each other
the new politics of power
distributed
It means that power is no longer
concentrated in the hands of a few
and this represents a huge
responsibility for citizenship
because with great power comes great
responsibility
we had never seen so much before
capacity in civil society to
influence the fate of their countries and
that is exactly a democratic state
the expression of our will and
collective action
we must understand that a
new leadership
the leadership that is within each one
of us
It’s time to participate and I’ll leave you
an example of that possible participation
after the elections the
initiative adopt deputy which is a
project that allows us all
understand a little better how the
legislative assembly and what tools
exist to continue to evaluate and disseminate
the work of the deputies
these efforts invite us to be
most active citizens
vigilantes of our government
responsible for our destiny
do not let us not fail to be at the
height of our time work
it just starts
and since political power is in you
and in voice
and in voice
and in voice
what are you going to do for your country
