Trust Your Inner Voice | Frank Gollon | TEDxYouth@RHS

how’s our little family gasps nine-time

custody i’m gerry just was fine a bit

your voice is trusting here in her voice

last week we have a mystical ceremony

spots I could ask him classic 2015 but

as I was assuming you’re watching all

these seniors come across the stage I

knew deep in my heart they’re going to

come secular college country there’s

three words that they are all wanna hear

full ride scholarship when it comes to a

college choice there’s three words that

they hate to say I don’t know and it

seems one more we are pushing and

pushing it push it push our kids to grow

up so fast all right middle school kids

if you were to think about what college

of my house you better make your choice

all right Tom entry school what are you

doing when you can do that the type of

look good on your console application

little Johnny he was he was

potty-trained way earlier you were so I

look this idea of economy get people to

really be able to lose the Iowa level

and to be able to you know sort of find

an inspiration to me because you ask any

vinegar you know what do you want to do

is your life and they’ve got already

handsome all right I’m gonna be a flake

later boys that well my dad mom put

that’s creative are you going to be over

in football player well that’s also why

i would put bowl right what do you want

to do I want to work with the animals

because i like my cake here awesome but

then suddenly something starts to happen

is the kids start getting older also

only detractors start jumping in there

saying well something you wouldn’t be

very good either because you heat pipes

time lapse another guy who wants to be

you’re playing with animals well no you

want to do that that’s up competing and

you can never pick up after your dog in

the arts particularly good very good

reviews monastery and those detractors

sort of cheese people away for those

initial inspirations that they have so

then suddenly they’re heading in high

school and now I what is found in a gig

got some of you choice of introducing

bebé choices what’s it going to be and

they have a voice voice and sign that’s

oftentimes having a screen running

conversation you’ve seen some of these

people w grocery store talking away and

you realize well where’s fallen take

blame as you really hasn’t really don’t

all right I’m not talking about those

kind of it I’m talk about the petty

people who inside or saddle questioning

and talking about inner world it was

this friends from right as little kids

we started first are very gay employees

and all the times when we’re about to do

something really bad no don’t I posed by

your parents the cast hail it won’t be

nice but of course we do with any of

these then we get spanked more we

realized okay it refers specifically be

the truth but then suddenly as we go

along and go along for some reason we

stopped trust amendments and now instead

we listen to the detractors and in the

World War II today the unfortunate

reality is that working imparted by

different courses out there they’re

trying to basically you are our

enterprise don’t listen to what your

conscience tells you know you want to

really truly believe what we tell and

suddenly we go from our media to think

for ourselves and really converse by

ourselves and once Ted being sort of

talked to it dictated to politicians

hold that we don’t want you to think

just we tried advertisers want that

don’t think of the amount of just trust

me it’s good tell me more all right so

we’re high school seems

we’re not trying to step in this world

who’ve lost that ability to sort of

listen there in turquoise to trust their

voice they are kind of left at the mercy

of what’s wrong all right a lot of

pressures are put upon you to you know

make that by choice take that right

color Harry but how do you know you

can’t trust with your voices talent is

the right degree or what is the right

choice for you we have built a society

where everyone’s being dictated to you

must go to college will not succeed in

this world but is that true is that

really true when I first started

teaching here all right I was amazed but

all the programs we had in this bill we

had ahead of time auto shop we had a

metal shop we have wood shop they were

building furniture and selling and all

of a sudden there was this whole move to

sleep women we don’t want these kind of

programs we want everyone going to

college instead so you had all these

kids who are like behind really want to

be a carpenter with which was Tom you

should be a carpenter but you know I’m

being told that I dated before your

college to earn a degree in something

couple years back I asked Mike lesson is

that how you you could nice to say your

parents are unhappy with their job and I

would say seventy five or seven is there

even shut up that’s devastating do you

want to over that same calf lillico know

what are you gonna do that well i’m

going to michigan like my parents told

me to and i’m going to be a free man but

my parents Bobi to and then i’m going to

be about is that what you’re not or not

I’m gonna be able spaceship commander my

TV video games are so big now they never

leader with a relative but no we have to

be able to a lot of people to trust that

inner voice once again alright and be

able to have that conversation with

themselves to say

what this is what I really want to do is

wherever it might be or this is where

I’m going to be happy happy oh wait a

minute whether I did that come to the

point are we supposed to be happy in our

lives come on answer my question yes no

yes yes where’s the same we can’t be

happy that’s great the pharmaceutical

companies don’t want us can’t be how

those for taking a daily grill so yes

that’s the problem we face now part of

me will I jump in here just make sure

i’m heading online vital notes all right

yes as we move on we see ourselves sort

of finding all these obstacles that

prevent us from really being able to

sort of listen to this going on here all

right and then suddenly we lose their

that as a result we love enemies like i

say those those high school seniors were

the idols for the most seniors who are

going into college and say yep I know

that code I’m doing I’ve got my total

career path visited occupation I’m gonna

get married to 15 children great

congratulations but the reality of our

overall it is that are you going to end

up where you think you’re going and the

answer is no because I’ll first people

get into college mostly realize whoo

there’s so many more possibilities here

or the temptations are thrown at you

know Bokova that past go down this path

I had the opportunity to go to New York

City and meet up with some former HS the

models it was her agency because there

was once to their but I met up with

who’d gone to MIT for I and he with his

goal he was going to be let me nuclear

physicist he was bidding into the lasers

space tournament all that kind of stuff

but as he was nearing graduation and

also he started getting all these

recruiters coming to him from Wall

straightening that all these huge

financial institutions were saying hey

all

mighty kids with like major brains do

you want to like the working on the app

store or do you want to come and work

for us let us use your brain and we will

pay you seen amounts of money he’s now

working for bending America and that’s

what’s happening is there so many forces

that are causing you to not listen to

your voice and are you going to be happy

if you don’t listen to your voice he’s

not he’s struggled he’s going bad and

really able to find here you know I

think he calls great money I am ready

money but I just don’t feel good about

what I’m doing just doesn’t feel right

all right so when you tell a person like

me can be the donation you throw

something excess money I wave really

much cooler right I snoozing about

theater here the brakes price right but

I said hey Bennett earlier still save

some that money to man go do what you

want to do and you wanted to worry about

money he’s gone anything online I never

looked better well obviously did say

that voice was back there tom you

couldn’t make this work ourselves but he

wasn’t willing to trust wasn’t willing

to trust alright i can tell you my name

when I was heading to college I was one

of those item movie I didn’t know for

sure what I want to do I did was hoping

that I would go into like civil engineer

and since that he we did alright but i

don’t know i had worked on construction

sites didn’t seem all that throwing to

me so i end up at all but ended up

taking all sorts of different classes

and I was drawn to english and

literature right and also theater as

well so as I was bouncing around an open

university I coming

earth when they tell you you must concur

beach hopefully some of you will not

have to go through that experience but

they tell you you have to excited now

okay well which was been good to me it

was the good sober relatives or teachers

perhaps that might get away and I had a

voice telling me to think Pat Frank

think back to your teaching experience

my teaching experience began at the

fourth grade we were an utterly fourth

grade class and one day the teacher went

on thought she was not happy and she

said okay well I think you think you do

this better go ahead give us run so I

did what any normal 43 food would do

when the teachers back was turned I

don’t explain and as soon as you turn

around I tell me snicker snicker snicker

but of course there was a little Suzie

Oh miss Evans Frankie braced his knee

hand so suddenly there was casta brought

the room and told okay smart guy teach

us well I look available resident never

enter a classroom without listen it was

not a good experience but every time

something off with my teeth I don’t know

how but voice was saving my place for

you so I added the education program

finished the education program and

they’re going to send me to Pawnee a

girl in high school for my student

teacher now I came from a being

predominantly white suburb the times

he’ll feel alright and going to open

university alright I didn’t experience a

lot of diversity at the time i was there

so I editor I named Gordon first day of

class teaching as the students standing

up introducing themselves and saying

something interesting about their son

and the first young man stands up he

says I’m going to tell you how I got

shot this up but I thought to myself

whoo this teaching thing perhaps not but

the voice of science saying

just over you can do this so like Rob

Schneider and any depends upon you’d be

a due date alright so as I started

teaching the pond ignore what i found

very quickly was that i was working with

something profitable I had a in vinegars

I you know kids police records and all

that kind of stuff and what i could do

realize was kind of connected in series

because all they were looking for was

for someone to care and when they

realized that I wasn’t just know there

for a page day not when you’re doing

student teaching you paid crazy things

so they realized okay this guy’s been

apartments with us and I was able to

work with them for an entire semester at

the end of the semester my time was done

and the students put together a this is

your life moment for me they call me

down to do you have to put down to the

small theater here there’s something on

and I come in my plastisol stand there

and they all we’re going to do this is

your life and I was like wow it was

pretty interesting you know scenario

because here comes the single big

kitties well 350 plus you know the thing

was to God okay okay and a CD students

playing my family and you know sharing

all these stories they convey some when

we’re pretty entertaining they said this

is a neat and the voice of sanity was

think this is what you need to do ah but

was I ready to listen to that voice no

so I kind of even graduated to something

here there and one day I can walk you to

rochester on the area and at a time all

right they weren’t hiring or anything

they’re saying oh yeah selling for a

while and then I self rew year anything

a position open that either before I

sorry

you know so then I was something in that

next year when something was theatre

director said album event that was the

building here and all the seniors came

running to be saying huh mr. gone he’s

not going to do the reason you gotta do

the municipal police you can’t do it for

us but I looked at that I said I have

never directed a shovel word but there

was a balls you can do these so I had

some theatrical experience or Donnelly

technical but having all these students

run every city must do this I said okay

and I can remember going through the

whole process the cast list having all

these students wanting to be crying

their eyes out though I didn’t I’m

thinking why did I sign up with this the

voice kept saying trust it’s going to be

okay so we went through all the ways

first we got to performances we got the

closing back and it’s kind of nice as I

was standing right and as the curtain

was closing as I was watching all the

students on stage cheering how to find

him stars of her clothes I said he

and it was tears of joy because of that

moment I realized that my inner voice

was right and I had found what I wanted

to do because I trusted my inner voice

and that was 31 years and they still

hadn’t yet read me so was doing second

so we have to learn that yet sometimes

that poison center her head knows what’s

best for us and we have be willing to

trust it even when this was

earlier what is telling us seems

uncomfortable I don’t know what I can do

that I can’t tell you the number of kids

that I had come through each step

through these doors like I can’t

audition and we grab the materials and

we throw them up there literally and

they’re they’re bouncing on the floor

and getting up okay do something and

they try Utley something realized it yes

something what their them but their

every boys does tell me what’s there you

can do it but for some reason the

detractors kept saying no no no you

can’t stay awake don’t either right

inside a to be young people village

people older people there is that voice

right and what we have to learn to do

learn to trust it it’s not enough to

just listen to that voice and have the

running conversations all right really

looking to have that triple bacon

cheeseburger without company should move

this that would mean I don’t know listen

to it it’s not not to diss listen

because if you listen then you tend to

ignore and when you tend to ignore

intended miss all possibilities that do

exist for you and it’s only when you

take the time to really trust that voice

all right and open yourself to the

possibilities of them possibly

uncomfortable that you’ll drill define

what you are truly going to be happiest

with an act and Here I am today it’s

calling that a bad spot over there I had

that moment because I trusted my voice

that was telling me you can do this so r

each and every one of you if you haven’t

found that moment of your life yet light

goes on tears stream down your face the

realization to a founder in place I hope

you find it student and for those of you

are still searching

it’s there let your inner voice guide
