Travel for local | Mateusz Giraudo | TEDxYouth@CopernicusNo33

okay so welcome okay folks now I want
you to imagine a dreamed of place where
you’d like to be now maybe it’s
Patagonia see Shelly Egypt Greece or sow
tomé and príncipe it doesn’t really
matter where now tell me have you
already arrived at your destination if
yes then we’re ready today I would like
to share with you my deepest philosophy
of traveling which has haunted me ever
since I started travel the word first of
all I would like to ask you a few
questions so who goes on holidays abroad
I want to see your hands
Oh surprisingly there are quite many of
you and next question will be a bit
trickier how many of you choose a travel
agency to go for holidays or have chosen
in the past raise your hands
okay okay many of you either so I bet
you go to Egypt Tunisia and Turkey and
you’d had a wonderful time swimming in a
pool beautiful weather and look Zoe’s
hotel so to understand my message
properly I want you to feel what really
bothers me and probably a lot of you
while being on holidays and this thing I
called a typical buddy list so first of
all imagine a typical Polish person
let’s call him Janusz he goes on
holidays on lustrum mean a trip and
where could he go like give me some
hints Greece Greece yeah precisely any
others
yeah sure but I would call this place
his home not not the destination so he
goes to Sharm el-sheikh in Egypt and he
alongside his family are having a great
time swimming in a pool with numerous
tourists from Poland where in the
evening the Arabs working as waiters
serve pizza typical Egyptian food and
when they had enough junk food they
enjoy an Egyptian woman doing a belly
dance and having a Binger contest so
after a two-week relaxing stay they fly
back home and soon after Janusz is
greeted by his colleagues
from work he brags about his stand
Redskin the amazing trips he had and the
many pools he swam in but then when his
colleagues asked him how it was young
unfortunately is incapable of naming
anything besides his hangovers his I
don’t know dark swimming in a pool tan
red skin and a new polish guy he met at
the bar so boom though Janusz was in
Egypt a country with such an abundant
cultural legacy he remained in his
conservative and xenophobic views
towards the foreigners so he calls them
terrorists and kebab makers but
sometimes I wonder if there was a better
way to change the unjustified attitude
towards the foreigners and to be honest
I couldn’t find any another concerning
issue that I can believe has worsening
throughout 10 years or even more is the
gap the gap between the enterprises so
to speak international tourist companies
and the local communities so nowadays we
travel to the most remote destination
basically every single one of you can
pick his own destination and hit him
whenever he wants so nowadays the
shortcoming of is of this is that most
of the words hot destination are located
in third-world countries
which means that we are extracting and
exploiting those places like miners
extract a call we take everything and
give nothing in return
so the issue is that the transnational
tourist companies with headquarters in
Western countries arrange the Tuesday
with Western looking hotels resembling
villas employed the locust on
unfavorable terms or what is most
distressing is that they make profits
from the money that should have gone to
the local communities whose daily income
is far below ours so imagine it now make
sure your seatbelts are fastened and all
safety measures are provided because the
iceberg is coming now imagine yourself a
picture where thousands of planes from
each
a landing in JFK Airport in New York and
the Brooks and city employees instead of
operating and working at this million
worth a transaction and signing
contracts are serving the Egyptians so
in a while New York City a cultural
capital of the world turns to be a hotel
paradise with a lot of garbage junction
and ten people laying on the streets or
drinking in caps so the only thing you
need to do now is to reverse it and you
will get the idea what it currently
looks like across the world
so another tendency that I observed is
the local alienation from tourists and
tourists isolation from locals nowadays
tourists includes hotels and resorts
that resemble our Western villas all
inclusive food fancy hotels arm
Guardians and arrange trips and many
many more dull standards so familiarity
is at its peak whereas novelty at a
minimum so there is less and less
competition and more and more
arrangement imagine when you are packed
into a shuttle bus full of homogenic
people which drives you from the airport
in Mumbai to the hotel and you look out
while while driving out the tinted
windows and you see all those miserable
people who live in slums for less than a
dollar a day isn’t it terrifying
another thing that hits me is the local
environment suffering from rising
mastery’s we take advantage of the gold
sandy beaches but at the same time we
drop a lot of garbage there if we look
at the Thailand’s coral reefs which
shrink every year due to the extensive
mass tourism we should really rethink
our actions and think how to preserve
the only place where we can all live the
earth so
this is the currency we used to say
thank you to say thank you to those
places we visit and to say thank you to
those people who serve us living a mass
so if we look at the 21st century
patterns we can easily observe some
uplifting tendencies which is really
great in favor of it in favor of
international trees such as facilitated
traveling or easily obtainable visas or
book income and of course the Internet
which is a really positive trend and if
we look globally we can witness the rise
of a global middle class which means
that more and more people will have more
income for travelling so another pattern
is that people will travel more
especially to those emerging countries
less economically economically developed
ones where the world’s most beautiful
and uncharted places are located so a
concerning trend about is that almost
all meaning 46 out of 50 least developed
countries now rely on tourism as the
primary source of foreign exchange
earnings and are and are also the places
where the tourism is growing the fastest
so taking all the above into
consideration we can come to a
conclusion that Travel link will be an
inherent part of every human being
whether it will be the neighbor country
like Germany or Pacific Asian country
like Thailand consider those rising
seven billion people who will all travel
and in fact it can be only a good thing
that my tinnitus bring us together and
also solve the problems of global
significance on which we depend upon as
long as will travel wisely and
responsibly that is why I’ve been
inspired by a very simple solution
ladies and gentlemen travel followkim
the concept is based on true
irresponsible tourism and it’s designed
for every single one of you you can
easily embrace it and implement the
thinking by traveling due to thousands
of blogs booking comms and many more
other tools arranging the trip yourself
has become only the matter of sitting on
the couch and opening your laptop
so couch potatoes wake up while
traveling with the proper mindset you
can remain independent and spend money
on the attractions like visit little
places hang out with locals and all your
actions which is fantastic will be
either neutral or for the benefit of
local communities the truth is that we
all have the tools to do it
meaning countless languages that we know
enough money and courage we have to
abandon our comfort zone and enter the
media horror stories world we should all
change the way we travel and explore the
world if we all travel for local we will
cultivate the tourism in favor of the
local community not the powerful
tremendous TNCs that’s steal money and
exploit the locals at the same time
narrowing the most precious thing about
travelling which is spontaneity will
square firmly of course I don’t want you
to go right now and Rob all the local
villages and for example it pertains
from someone’s plate but you can ask the
locals through the town village seaside
and should show you the most beautiful
virgin vistas or bring you to the most
primal but the taste local cuisines in
which the local songs travel recently
I’ve been on further Ventura one of the
Canary Island I flew there with my
beloved friends one is sitting over
there and we went for surfing and to be
honest we arrived at the paradise which
was great but the paradise was for the
pensioners and Germans German ones so
believe me around 12 tons of planes
every single day arrived at the small
airport full of these old people and we
arrived a trip ourselves and staying on
our own and during our one-week stay
with each kike the island to travel the
island of Nan and the outcome was that
six out of eight drivers with the
Germans and what we did was that we
shared stories had some appropriate
jokes and what is most important is that
we made a connection a thing that leaves
a memory about another person
who lives in another country so you can
see that even in such an extreme
environment such as the wholly touristic
island of fertile Ventura you can still
remain independent and travel for con so
traveling is a very humbling experience
and the only ingredient that you need to
get like a good bread with is
open-mindedness so while being an
open-minded person you feel closer to
people which means you abandon your
ignorance arrogance and superiority
towards them and you feel that the
differences and the prejudices you’ve
been brainwashed with in media’s and
stuff we’re just an illusion so you
develop the common identity us instead
of them travelling shapes your
perception when you travel especially
locally and you witness the disparities
in wealth material possessions of the
people who live at the destinations and
are able to live happily and humbly you
start appreciating what you have at home
the work you do the school you attend to
such as our glorious one in the daily
and so lamentable alive so what is
what’s more is that by traveling your
perspective broadens you don’t
understand people you learn their
customs and you can get inspired
personally what I’ve been learned from
Thai people was the act of smiling that
I apply on the streets when I pass by
these strangers I simply smile I simply
smile so try to yourself and see the
response to the simplest act you’ll be
astonished how powerful and uplifting it
is so what I want you to do now right
now is to share a smile with each other
I think it will be like a positive
feeling at least for a sec so what is
quite wonderful about travelling it
never ends
is the chance to set your own mind on
various issues cultures caste as many
others so you develop your own opinion
instead of listening those storming
prejudices you’ve heard in media does
you break up the cultural barrier and
you feel that the horror stories in
media was a hug
and you can also feel comfortable if
other people
despite their dark-skinned different
clothing little clothing or no clothing
it turns out that they are not that
scary as they seemed so in fact we are
the ones who pushed the limits beyond
imagination like bus astral did in Toy
Story did you know that a regular
Western tourists American Western
European doesn’t matter consumes more
water at the destination than a regular
local it’s an again a terrifying thing
and nowadays in the era of globalization
although our word tends to become more
and more divided it connected in many
fields we are still divided so we still
build a lot of walls instead of forming
bridges so travelling allows you to do
it yourself to abandon prejudice to
develop your own opinion to make
connections to be amazing inspired and
what I want you to apply after maspeedy
speech whether it will be 10% non 100%
is to is to travel and be open as you
are for the people you know and
instantly you will see how bright the
word will appear to you no matter rain
or shine and benjamin clementine an
extremely talented british musician who
also delivered one of his TED talks in
one who’s one of his song sinks we may
wait we make a living by what we get but
we make a life by what we give and I
think that it suits perfectly what I’ve
been trying to convey throughout my
speech in this very moment very very
place so you cannot travel and give
nothing at the same time and with time
you will understand it so the way you
will travel will not only be for the
benefit of local communities
but for the first time yours as well
so I think that that is how we should
look at it for the benefit of us the humans
