The power of influence | Sameer Ahmed | TEDxNUSTKarachi

people that I care through it’s always
an honor to speak at TEDx events
especially TEDx must a University
everyone dreams to get in thank you so
much for attending this conference so
let me start when I was in I when I was
in Qatar in school we had a concept that
anyone who got good grades will be given
an option to choose medical science
anybody who sucked will choose computer
science so people who got good grades
can enter medical science unfortunately
I got good grades and everyone around me
the teachers the professor’s started
calling me dr. semir dr. semir and my
friends chose medical science and I said
alright I am also choosing medical
science and that is how entered into the
world of computer or medical science and
my talk right now is about how people
influence your life decisions it could
be good or bad the people who are
sitting right now the person sitting
next to you is having an influence on
you right now all right so
[Music]
something happened in Qatar I have to be
in tune Pakistan all right and people
told me here that the shortcut in get in
gaining good grades is to choose
computer science I had three months to
try to you know give exams they told me
choose computer science so I chose
computer science and I got and I did my
matrix metric and that is exactly how I
was pushed into the world of computer
science so I was pushed into this field
which I loved because of the pressure of
society
I was lucky the my my advice to you is
know what you want to be know what
excites you so that you can wake up
every morning and be that person again
alright my so be crazy alright be
conduct you know do the plays be the
Tipu Sultan do augmented reality to
virtual reality be a computer scientist
do JavaScript whatever it takes you you
choose that nobody knows what you want
to be I cannot tell you what you are
good at is only you will matter so I’ll
be sharing seven points in this talk my
entire life
journey that have been through second
thought is hack your thoughts alright if
you find all of negativity around you
you can heck your own mind and that’s
the best thing I learned when I came to
Pakistan it was a life-changing moment
alright I learned about life I learned
about sadness relationships parents and
how negativity can affect you I started
writing poems and my poem was different
in the start of the poem I used to write
negativity and all about darkness
alright and at the end I
created a fictional character and that
character told me it will be alright
it’s alright it will pass off so my
poems one of that category and I shade
those poems with the community and they
loved it
that’s how I understood that this is a
gift that I can relate to people around
me and that is what I learned that you
can hack your thoughts to have a great
influence in society my third is my
interest in this start of roller coaster
ride so my dad sold his car so that I
can buy a laptop
I bought a laptop did freelance work and
once I did freelance work I graduated
from crashing university got second
position
I made awesome friends graduate and then
I did freelancing again I started a
software consulting company we made it
run me of six seven months everything
was good I got featured in text you stop
525 until I you know turned 26 that’s
the sad part
I was really sad when I turned 26 but
then I started a startup I worked for
three years on that product I also got
an opportunity to get incubated at lumps
University and I didn’t choose that I
could that product because we were too
late three years I stopped that product
I started a second product Verdun for
eight months and then killed that
product it failed
started my third product gone incubated
at the nest I have in Karachi and we had
investor opportunities but I thought
that you know this is not good for us
and I started another fourth product in
my weekends and that product I shaded
with Guy Kawasaki he loved it and that’s
how I entered my fourth startup now I’m
running my fourth startup and I’m
running software consulting company it’s
not easy but this ride is worth it my
next point is fourth one is make good
friends and compete we always complain
that we do not have we cannot find the
best friends we cannot we do not have a
good team but honestly we never worked
one of our friends all right now
whenever you see a good movie what do
you do
whenever you see a good movie tell it to
the world that
watching Justice League or watching
Wonder Woman you shade on Facebook but
when you learn something new let’s say
designing JavaScript you never share on
Facebook saying learning designing why
because you think that your friends will
find you too boring so the trick is and
the worst part is that you don’t share
it because you think you’re gonna it’s a
secret that once you learn it you’re
gonna surprise the world but I I have
learned designing but to be honest that
day never comes because you lose your
motivation down the road the trick is to
use the power of influence so the trick
is that you download a tutorial give it
to your friend and say that I’m learning
designing your friend will say yeah
right keep on doing do two chapters
share with your friends say that you
know I have made this out of the
tutorials your friend now will be
frustrated he’ll say my god my friend is
learning we only get trouble when our
friends learn so your friends will ask
for that tutorial share the tutorial
chances are you might lose motivation at
the fifth chapter but he might come to
you and say that look I have done eight
chapters this is how teams are built
this is how you know you can win in
competitions in school in nation in
society this is a trick that you should
use use the power of influence and not
only that teaching your class teaching
your universities and this is that is
how we did my co-founders I’m Maya SH
University batchmates
all right Viva chosen by Microsoft and
Nokia to give trainings to different
universities in Pakistan because we’ve
we’ve we thought that it’s a valuable
thing to do right
so my next point is balance your life
before it’s too late
and all the people tell you that you
know you have to work 40 hours in a week
60 hours in a week 70 hours in a week
and keep working keep working my point
is balance your life you know if you
have a cat if you have pets cat parrots
if God bless you if you have a dog you
have to give 30 minutes one hour to that
pet right why is that we cannot give the
same amount of time to our parents why
is that we cannot sit with our parents
putting our smartphones down
now the worst scenario is you go to your
home you go to your home your mom asks
you son daughter how was your day you
reply it was good did you eat yes
there’s something trouble you know the
answers are always yes and no now at
that moment if you get a message from
your beloved how was your day sweetheart
you’re gonna destroy Internet you’re
gonna destroy a facebook Messenger
you’re gonna say everything I had a good
day you know she talked to me and she
didn’t talk to me you know professor
says there’s less this this is a sad
thing your parents have a limited time
you have a limited time always paid time
to your parents before it’s too late
religion parents and work always
balances my six point I stole this slide
from Guy Kawasaki he says that don’t let
the posters grind here over the two
types of losers in this world
well loser is a loser that is obvious if
he’s his bears don’t crawl clothes he
will tell you it come to you give me
money and you cannot do something you
will not listen to that loser stays
second type of loser he’s very dangerous
loser
he looks famous he looks something that
everybody is famous and what happens is
he looks very famous and he wears red
tie black suit has white you know white
hairs and that was and when you come to
that loser all right he will tell you
with an idea he’s gonna tell you that
you cannot do something it the idea is
not worth the while right be afraid of
that loser history has shown some losers
for example Thomas Watson he says is in
this one in this world there’s need for
only five computers all right another
entrepreneur can also and he says
there’s no reason for anybody to have
computers at their home now imagine
Steve Jobs Bill Gates going to these
famous people and telling their idea
about Macintosh right now there would be
no Apple there would be no windows so
this is a picture this is a very famous
university right I was pitching my
second product and I was in a Q&A of
judges one judge stopped me and said me
stop talking this idea will not work
it’s an obsolete go down and period and
that was a moment I have a sitting
with audience full of all my teammates
were backside and I was like if you see
my expressions they’re perfect postman
of Kapoor like I write in English what
have I done to you right and if I was
pitching for the first time in my life
that might be the last time because it
really broke me apart and this type of
losses will always be there in your life
you have to remember you will come
across such people my 7th and the last
point learn to ask for help now the
problem is when we get famous when we
become rock stars when competitions get
a position we never learn we never want
to ask help from our seniors or juniors
we think that if we ask help it will
hurt our pride and ego
what will that person think that I am
asking help now this is the very sad
part if we put our ego and pride before
it when I was a kid I small like 1012
years I used to be I used to pray with
all my heart that when I you know next
morning I become spider-man and my dream
was to become spider-man I used to pray
to God oh god you know when I wake up
next morning I become spider-man and I
used to I had so much faith that I’ve
waited till my mom left the room and I
you know did something like this and
nothing came out and I said damn today’s
not my day I did that and I saw the Spider Man you know
