The Power of Film | Meghan Schlageter | TEDxOakKnollSchool

hi I’m doing some quotes and just how
long or raise your hands
roughly everything okay here we go every
feeling you’re not in Kansas anymore
help me obi-wan Kenobi you’re my only
hope
life is like a box of chocolates I think
we’re going to need a bigger boat just
keep something the best we can happen we
really hope you get that one so it looks
like the majority of you rose or hands
or shared sunny vacation of nowhere
these foot stretch and to me that’s
pretty strange I mean sure I have my
family and friends here but with the
majority of you who’ve never had a
conversation yet you’re able to get by
exactly what I’m talking about
without me ever having introduced myself
that’s pretty powerful and to me that is
the power fill sure you may argue that
we all haven’t seen the same television
shows or movies but what about the news
what’s happening the world according to
the American presence to 87% of
Americans receive their news from
television program and according to the
New York Daily ins the African American
watches over 5 hours of television each
day and that increases to 7 hours once
we reach age 65 so with that said I’m
here to talk about all the greatest
things that we have in common you know
other than the desire to be happier I’m
serious I believe it books and movies
and media have a tremendous impact on
our lives but film in a special way film
is one of the most enticing ways to
present a story or an idea to audience
and it takes
ecology develops it’s no wonder that
filters popularized up in fact the 2014
Academy Awards received a total of 44
million viewers from the United States
alone but as phones do develop and more
methods of storytelling become available
the ratings of these movies change slow
I would have served the negative effects
of film if that’s alright so that I can
end on a more positive so the New York
Times found at PG and pg-13 rated movies
have more profanity and sexual content
than even their r-rated counterparts
from a few decades ago
therefore the integration of explicit or
inappropriate themes may be influencing
today’s youth however it’s pretty hard
to conduct experiments on the true
impact of film because no one’s going to
deprive some of the right to experience
it although it may not be the right to
happiness the right to create witness or
experience art is something you can’t
take away from any so you can’t conduct
experiments on the impact of different
films on people take the book take the
cognitive blockbuster hit Wolverine
which you may be hearing a lot about
recently sent a new installment to the
franchise Logan has recently kefir the
movie is depict a mutant of Manovich
Brad McKinley
most abilities and retractable metal
claws and within its knots
according to ion duties parental guide
the film contains sexes male and female
partial nudity gore and stabbings a
total of 21 curse words as well as these
not yet it’s still rated pg-13
therefore the integration of such themes
may truly be impacting today t according
to The Huffington Post the integration
of themes may be influencing you through
the use of over 200,000 screams a big
and small screen violence including more
than 16,000 words before we reach the
age of 18 so this may truly be impacting
today’s youth but you can also influence
you can also see the influence of film
on all people a study conducted by the
National Institute of Health / the
National Library of Medicine found that
influence that the impact of film can on
also influenced our women they took a
total of 45 psychology majors into them
film saw to elicit fear sadness or
neutrality on the same 17-inch pc screen
they chose films such as the blare
scream one in the shining under the pier
category City of Angels Philadelphia New
Jersey
under the sadness category and
television news snippets or clips from
stock market channels under the neutral
category they then monitored how their
inspiring would affect their performance
on the bisection task compared to how
they performed earlier day and the exact
same test the result included that those
who witnessed the fear inducing filter
muscles happy loving content calm and
much more aroused active nervous anxious
and obviously great secondly those who
watch these sad films or much left
lively happy peppy active aroused and
anxious and much more sad gloomy and
well work finally this watch the neutral
films were much less happy content peppy
active and much sadder tired and twelve
theft the sheer act of watching films is
absolutely proven to accept the mental
state personally when I was younger I
remember with my mother and my birthday
teacher telling me that at least in
their remember they were terrified of
the flying monkeys in the woods or box
now me at the time had never seen these
movies couldn’t understand Lowell
sympathetic via two completely separate
people in my life had a trauma that was
entirely created by self and film as I
said before it’s a great common ground
between people but when you don’t share
that commonality it’s completely
straight
how can you hear something you don’t
know exists but helping have some
tremendously positive in taxes level
from the first motion picture created by
every bridge in 1872 to the huge
explosion of film and radio in the 1920s
film really created this level phenom
and the celebrity scene really begs the
question of originality so often do we
compare ourselves to others and
Hollywood although producing many of the
celebrities we aspire to replicate
actually causes us to think the other
way if I were to tell you that I was
going to see a movie in which a girl is
treated like a servant by her unholy
stepmother and stepsisters while looking
for love you would of course think that
I’m talking about Cinderella and if it
was not a direct inspiration from
Cinderella you would refer to it as a
propulsive Hollywood inspires and
practically requires original plot lines
as well as original names when entering
the unions for actors a profession that
exploded becomes a film union such a
piece Screen Actors Guild will require
actors to create a stage name because
then they may already be chosen in the
DAX they do this to enhance originality
and to
playful computer but this also comes
with books after its musicians models
that have you have to be comfortable
with their unique or unusual features
because that’s what’s going to get cast
no one’s going to hire someone who looks
just like and the stone makes higher
step if you leave this is a good time to
reference or it’s like bingo or Picasa
when you go to the museum you can pick
their artwork out of crowd because they
aren’t like other artists sure they can
be inspired by people but they listen to
their own voice and that’s what makes
them unique and that’s why we know they
are additionally films can highlight the
entire originality of time and us wrap
all the other single upset to be in
yourself in a world that’s mostly trying
to make you something else is the
greatest accomplishment in films such as
The Hunger Games or divergent we see
more female heroines as women today
struggle to challenge gender roles or as
you become more aware or accepting for
gender as you see sounds like the Danish
girl starring Eddie Redmayne and appears
even in simple Disney moves movies like
Zootopia which recently won an Academy
Award for Best Animated picture they
hold in the message of
as we need a society struggle to do the
same this is really powerful especially
in influencing of your minds because
when you show a child something that is
age-appropriate it can be a great tool
to teach languages lessons or even life
skills finally film can influence our
expression to break methods of the high
school student I’m constantly told don’t
use eyes and papers and personally I
find this is very dangerous when
imitating or sighting let’s say attacks
we’re always told to use credible
information derived from the author
themselves and if we do thought read
have an original thought we have to
state it as no information or saving me
reader is aware of X Y Z but film allows
you to think the other way it allows you
to tell your story just like all other
articles real quick I would like you all
to imagine that you were space film what
would it be about who would you cast
where would you film anything is
possible
but what if I were to tell you they
actually have to make itself how many of
your aspirations have changed so often
with we come up with an idea we imagine
all the possibilities but when it
actually comes time to make it we lower
our expectations and beast up I remember
a few months ago I was watching a
feature at automating of wall island and
I remember director Damien Chazelle said
something along the lines of he was
making the movie it was very important
to him to tell the story he wanted to
make the wife you want to take it he
said it was key for him to not change
any of his plans until the problem
actually presented itself even if that
meant shutting down an entire Los
Angeles freeway on the hottest day of
summer
it’s visions like this that drove the 32
year old to be the youngest director in
history to win an Academy Award for
directing and you can headstrong people
like this combine their counts of truly
amazing causes that I want math out
there even websites such as films for
action that’s been their goal is to
provide citizens with the information
and perspectives essential to creating
more just sustainable and democratic
side the website houses more than two
thousand films dedicated to variety of
topics whether it’s just–it’s or simply
to make you smile including this one
entitled stressed out this weird
relaxing like affirming
you need yes I mean watch it and I can
attest that it is good but all around
the world people are recognizing the
immense power of film and using it to
persuade politicians to change their
vote
inspire consumers to be more conscious
of what they buy or encourage people to
donate and support charities as director
Martin Scorsese Loeb set films awaken
our vision they open doors not I would
like to leave you with imagining a world
cup I know that this world existed at
some point but everything from the way
the idealized celebrities or view the
world through the news would change in
an instant
the world would self of change in an
instant I’ve heard of quote and forgive
me for not knowing where it’s from but
because something along the line to
impart makes you feel and any way shape
or form it has done its job film can
inspire fear and status but it can also
make you feel love and creativity and
expression and ultimately make the world
place so although film they have its
downsides but I think all things do I
believe with the powerful it’s the power
to change the world
