the young don’t know how to eat and the
mature don’t know how to tweet if you’re
under 40 and you don’t have a robust
social media we think you’re in the
witness protection program if you’re
over 40 and don’t have a robust social
media we think your attack dinosaur and
you didn’t adapt that’s why I have a job
as an etiquette coach when you hear the
word etiquette do you think in your head
fufu she she poopoo you’re not alone
etiquette isn’t just for formal dinners
and confusing forks etiquette is to help
us tame the obstacle course of knowing
how to behave in all social situations
so my freshman year of college I headed
to Europe I followed some of my fancy
friends and I didn’t know that having
only $200 in my pocketbook could be
dangerous
they had like these big backpacks of
money but I said I’m gonna go too
so we ended up on the bus and they this
bus was packed and you it stunk and it
pat it was packed and it stopped a
million times and about the hundredth
time it stopped this little Italian lady
came drilling down there a mature lady
came drilling down in the middle of the
bus and I got out of my seat to give her
my seat and so I’m helping her sit and
all of a sudden I heard an explosion of
sound and as I get back up startled the
whole bus is clapping and going crazy
these disgruntled people are not
disgruntled anymore so I look over and
there’s an Indian grandpa and his little
Indian toothless a little boy smiling
and clapping going crazy and I look over
here and a South African family and
they’re stomping their feet and they’re
clapping and going crazy and then
there’s an Asian couple doing the same
thing and then behind me some French
teenagers that I was just talking to
they were clapping and going crazy so in
three seconds the impact of one kind act
brought all those people together
but that was in the olden days in the
90s so I just always think about how our
brand was just face to face then but now
the whole world is on that bus with us
the little Indian boy would be videoing
and uploading to YouTube
the South African family they would be
putting it on Facebook the Asian folks
they would be instagramming it and the
French people would be snapping and
tweeting so we’re being streamed to
constantly we don’t have a choice
anymore where we’re being streamed so
our new first impression is online and
it’s constant so I was not always good
at Edeka to then I was 10 years old my
mother passed away and the short story
of that is that makes you awkward quirky
and weird I didn’t want to be awkward
working weird so a nice teacher one day
gave me an etiquette book and she said
you might want to read this so i
dog-eared it and i underlined it and I
loved it but what I found out was I had
two more quirks and it’s not my seller
an accent so one of my quirks was
outward I talked too much I talked all
the time and everybody cents sit down be
quiet quit talking and I’d get these big
red gooey X’s on my report card and
every quarter of my whole school career
when the report cards came I would bite
my nails so they bled and I would have
bad dreams so then I suffered with the
inner quark and I had dyslexia so again
y’all already know
lots of red X is on my report card so
letters and numbers would just dance on
a page and it seemed a really upset
adults so I tried to hide it so I held
that beach ball under the water trying
to hide it and them not knowing I got so
exhausted so finally when I let that
beach ball up and I let it out of the
water though I promise y’all it’s crazy
like those letters just went down and
those numbers went down from the paper
and it wasn’t so difficult but even
better than that me sharing my quark
it’s the adults knew how to help me and
get me help and that was just like when
I was on asked to be an etiquette
correspondent for NBC daytime I was so
excited I’d never been I’ve never been
on TV and of course everybody from
preschool to college icon said I’m gonna
be on TV well I get there and I get to
this we shot on location and I step in
this big mansion and there’s lights and
cameras and moving parts and people and
I just stood there like this I was so
carsick I’m like what am i what am I
gonna do for hours that lovely cameraman
shot and shot that we couldn’t get
anything and he told me I’m gonna have
to get back to the station and my heart
dropped and I said wait one second so I
ran outside there are these big oak
doors and I put my head on the door and
I start praying to my mother and I said
you’ve got to help me I want to do this
so bad they’ll never invite me back and
I’m shaking and I’m scared in my
dyslexia has gone gangster so so all of
a sudden again my heart settle down and
I settle down and so as I went to put my
hand back on the door I realized I was
still my mind said that whole crew and
that cameraman and everybody heard me
crying and carrying on it went on a lot
longer than I just did so I thought i’ma
walk home and I thought ooh my real
people clothes we’re back in the house
so I want my real people clothes back so
I went in and when I went in the crew
didn’t look worn out and the cameraman
said come on let’s do it one more time
and we shot five segments in one hour
which in TV is unheard of I mean it’s
just a miracle so once again if you just
tell the truth you know I learned again
quit hiding
tell the truth because we all came
together and now I’ve been lucky enough
to be on to do that for 10 years
so I would like to help you identify
your Clerk and what you know is your
best asset so number one identify it
whatever makes you different is your
quark number two embrace it like a
friend and like treat it like your best
friend
you’re going to say what you’re gonna
say is I’m gonna take up for you and I’m
okay for you
number three treat it as a gift don’t
bury it like I did you want to pull it
up love on it look at it because it will
take you unimaginable places like the
time I went to a park to a party at the
White House my husband’s a concert
promoter and he booked the musician so
honey I busted in that room I was just
the best thing and all these musicians
all these actors all these movie stars
all these famous writers and I went
around and talked to all of them and I
thought I’m not gonna stay in this room
so I beelined for the security guard and
I went up to her and I said can you show
me something fascinating in this White
House and she said ma’am checking
through security you’re the only one
that asked me how my night was going and
her name was Dee and I knew that because
that’s my sister’s name and I did Sadie
can you show me what’s fascinating and
she said you’re the only one that
remember my name so I thought about it I
thought hmm you know what I got in
trouble for when those big red X’s and
height in high school my quirk got me
all over the White House and all those
glitterati people in that room all those
fufu sheshe pupus they didn’t get to go
and do that so the last thing I want to
say is that you’ve got to leverage your
quirk you’ve got to make it work and I
talked on TV I talked to big groups like
this and I talked a book makes me cry
into tenth printing so Mike were talking
ended up being my superpower so you’ve
got it in you gotta accept it
and integrate it and it does it just
makes you so powerful and it’s a it just
takes you everywhere you ever dreamed to
going so from Yale to jail
Wall Street’s just from Yale to jail
Wall Street the street gangs what do we
all want we all want respect and it
starts right here we have to respect
ourselves so there are two things that
I’m very excited about and one is the
old first impression it was industrial
and we all had to conform and you didn’t
dare get out of line and I’ve lived that
and you didn’t dare have an idea number
two now we’re living in the new first
impression ideas original ideas and
being different is celebrated Apple and
Amazon they cherish your degrees and
other corporations but what they cherish
more are your quirky ideas and
innovations so entrepreneur used to be a
cuss word now it’s a buzzword and their
master’s degrees so from Yale to jail
Wall Street to street gangs that’s all
we want is respect but it has to start
here it’s a shortcut to success I
promise you with everything in my whole
heart it’s a shortcut to success and
your introductions will always be
trusted memorable and fascinating and
y’all I’m so happy to tell you look at
my big red X yes now thank you thank you ah thank y’all
mature don’t know how to tweet if you’re
