The Market of Hype | Raj Vora | TEDxWhitneyHigh

a supreme box logo t-shirt the holy
grail a simple white t-shirt with a red
supreme logo can sell for up to $2,000
why a little backstory is supreme when
supreme is first created they don’t want
to be a Walmart or a target these
big-box retailers they want to be
something special so what they decide to
do was implement an economic model call
shorting the supply in order to increase
the demand and what that means is
basically keeping your supply short even
if there’s more demand for your products
leading to exclusivity so what that look
like for supreme each week that release
a set of products a limited amount of
products and they’re constantly sell out
so the years went by and more products
sold out to be more in demand and more
exclusive fast forward to today this is
what we see every single Thursday
outside supreme for corporations who use
this it’s beneficial in two ways one
your supply for growing companies
they’re not bogged down by a large my
supply that’s not being sold constantly
and to the hype each week these
exclusive products have free publicity
all do the fact that are just exclusive
and simple now even though it’s mainly
using Street where it started to expand
Apple one of the largest tech companies
out there is using this model when it
comes to the iPhone 7 on the day of the
release what they do leading up to the
release there are three pictures out of
the iPhone 7 and then quickly deleted to
build up to the hype the day of they
said they cannot supply enough for all
the people who want a phone and when
that day came when the iPhone 7 released
this is what we saw outside multiple
different Apple stores to put this in
perspective these people lining up right
now are buying the phone they aren’t
walking out of store with the phone in
their hand they are pre buying this
phone just because the hype
all these people three weeks later we’re
coming back to go pick up their iPhone
now the tech industry’s been taken by
this model streetwear and even the food
industry McDonald’s one of the largest
franchise in the world released the
Szechuan sauce the Chevron sauce with an
idea on a TV show and McDonald’s side to
make it a reality
McDonald’s being a large franchise
rather than putting it in every single
store they said they’re only releasing
in five different states and within
those states only very few stores so
obviously everyone try this so the day
of the release came and within 30
minutes it’s sold out and 30 minutes
after that this is what happened five
thousand dollars for a free packet of
sauce on eBay this economic model
creates something that nobody could ever
predict a larger market call the
resellers now what is a reseller or
research someone that understands what
the market they are playing in and how
to take advantage of that market
analyzing AIIMS are more valuable on the
after market price and being able to
make a profit off that for me when I got
into reselling it was all about Kanye
West and Yeezys what Easy’s were wears
pair of shoes that would retail for
about two hundred twenty dollars and
often sell for up to a thousand dollars
so if you get your hands on these very
exclusive shoes it automatically meant
profit but a thing were these shoes were
very limited and hard to get your hands
on so for the first time when I bought
my first pair of Yeezy was as easy flip
easy money but as more pair started
releasing you can see that some shoes
are more valuable
while some shoes had more price release
Cosman it’ll be less valuable so that’s
where the skill of a reseller comes in
for yeezy as you to analyse three
different parts of one choosing a bias
shoe one you need to understand what the
market feels about this shoe do they
love the shoe do they hate the shoe
today when they die for this shoe do
people really want this shoe – you need
to understand how many of these shoes
have been created as you can see some
are much less than others and the less
shoes
equals more profit more exclusivity and
finally by far the most important part
how much money am I gonna make off these
shoes I started buying a pair of Yeezys
and reselling and it was really good for
me
I understood the market I was playing in
and now if we go back to the Supreme Box
logo t-shirt it’s not that hard to
understand why we can see it up for
$2,000 even $3,000 all because we feed
into the system of hype companies
understand they can make a profit each
week but why do people like me and other
people line up for these products day in
and day out hoping to get their hands on
a Yeezy supreme any of these limited
products all for one thing money the
fact of the matter is is that money is
what runs our economy and today we were
talking about the market of hype and
where ever hype goes that’s where the
money follows and the thing is we may
think about like not everyone’s audience
wants a $1,500 t-shirt or a pair of
shoes for a thousand dollars but the
fact of the matter is this economic
system is spreading to technology and
even food now and what we need to
understand from this is that we’re
playing an unfair system where we are
we have to fight to get our hands
on these exclusive items but there’s a
way to take advantage of this market
which I understood a while ago we can
use the hype these products have for our
own benefit if we can understand that
people want these products that’s how we
can make money off these products and
simply as this thing continues to grow
all we really need to do to make money
in today’s economy is understand the
market of hype thank you [Applause]
