I decided to host a family gathering and
we had little six-year-old girl with us
she didn’t really have anyone to play
with so she went looking for something
to do and she found this telephone
I had cartoon characters all over so she
decided to play with it she was
pretending to call her friends and bite
them over and she was having a great
time until she got some props 9-1-1 what
is your emergency
this is 911 emergency yes yes there are
Tigers here big scary meaning Tigers and
I am lady and she must have had pretty
convincing partners but it’s not like
the conversations she realized that she
was in trouble
so she came downstairs and she told us
what she had done and a father took her
aside and explained to her that I 1 1 is
nothing to be playing that this is a
very serious thing but we were standing
off to the side giggling hysterically
Tigers where did she go
she was having a great time of her
imagination that day and she hadn’t been
pretty convincing because we got a
surprise
now when one call up wanted to make sure
that she was safe and sound
and they followed it up with a knock on
our door
think I need to see her I need to see
that she is Satan’s down and she was she
was no longer bored she had a huge
imagination she did not do good
gentlemen so she used a lot of
imagination we’ve had a tendency to as
soon as we feel just a moment of boredom
we reach for something to do by her fall
for the internet for television we don’t
allow ourselves to do that mind
wandering the letter itself just go on
and think a little bit to ponder to to
reflect the imaginative be creative and
that’s a shame because in that time that
your danger that’s actually what your
brain flex to do when you leave your
brain alone and let them do whatever it
once it starts majoring they cause the
default though and if you let your brain
go there you’ll find some great things
that’s where your creativity is that’s
where innovation is that’s when you
solve problems all the things that you
will get around us are here because
someone have created idea an innovative
idea and they use that to share it it’s
the connections that you start to make
you see creativity really is nice trying
to define and think about what
creativity actually is it’s what you
make those can
between two things you put them together
when when you did the masses they even
went together think of like a compound
or example you have cheese and cake you
put it together and you have completely
to work cheesecake or Sun and shine
sunshine
oh no she likes to have these
connections these dots think of the dots
being connected and the more dots that
you have the better chance for brain
estimating you need connection the more
units work with and you at this age you
can’t give you brain lots of dots to
work with and the more you do those dots
at once stay with you for life done
you’ll be reaching that and to be
grabbing ahold of that guy
you see we actually have things like
that the fonts of our computers because
and by the name of Steve Jobs who
created at the computers with the iPhone
took a calligraphy class at Reed College
the bargain scanners that you step up to
every time you buy something those are
there because man by the name of Norman
Joseph woodland was sitting there in the
sand one day making clothes Morse code
that he learned in the army and use that
technology and put it together with what
the Morse code linking up with something
completely new and different so the more
you give your brain to work with the
better always going to be
we also are actually doing something
really healthy for our brains when we
are dangerous about you didn’t take back
so you go through your entire day with
people your parents for example same pay
attention are you paying attention to
teachers pay attention even when you go
to after-school activities
coaches and you have instructors saying
pay attention this is the one time of
day that you’re not supposed to pay
attention
in fact that’s kind of the point let
your mind wander when you do that your
brains are actually stopping fouls and
you’re growing their brain you’re
developing your brain because creativity
problem-solving are very closely related
and when you do that you let your brain
develop new skills that you’re going to
come back into the classroom and
learning a nice work to learn more mates
are developing critical thinking skills
and those are going to be really helpful
for you there is a group of researchers
that decide that they wanted to know
what the relationship is between boredom
and creativity so they went up through
the volunteers and they said here are
two plastic cups
what can you think of to do with these
two cups I could store markers or candy
or these there’s one of the answers but
then the researchers decided to
intentionally make all these volunteers
for now how do you go about doing it
when you want to make someone more how
do you do it
well experiment with a bunch of these
things and what they found the most
effective way of making people more was
to ask them to read from the Tahoma
names and phone numbers alphabetically
on and on for 20 minutes
but researchers came back and said to
posit does
what can you think of to do of these two
plastic cups I have to turn them upside
down take the marker and draw faces on
them with hair and notices the guys and
I when I come back show with my friends
or I can type between the two of them
you can hear will be tough though they
came up with such better answers try
this many times and that what they know
is that when you were born
first that’s when you come up with some
let’s take a look at a picture where
some of you will look up here and you
will see the image of a young woman
young beautiful she has a shoulder you
can speak better coming out of the top
of her head over hat yes I mean you can
see that image yeah okay now how many of
you look up there and you see the image
of an older woman yeah you see that
she’s looking down just kind of sad when
each in the shawl the top of her head
those see that everyone see that
okay so here the old one that’s our
mouth right there that is an eye other
eye
[Music]
[Applause]
[Applause]
see oh oh yeah very good
yeah that’s very good but see there’s
nothing you cannot look up there at that
image and see both simultaneously at the
same box you can either see the yellow
minutes or you can see the old woman
or you can switch back and forth very
rapidly to get that image of both of
them in here at the same time now after
looking at this I noticed that many of
you oh I get it
I see right that is called it happens
when you make that connection and all of
a sudden you go ah I get it
it’s the ball going off it’s that moment
you can’t unsee it it seems obvious to
you that that existed that was already
there it seems really obvious it seems
to happen most frequently when we are
about to fall asleep
or taking a shower or walk in the woods
those are the times of those aha moments
take place the most often or relax
yeah there is another group of
researchers just here at Rush University
that wanted to know what does the brain
look like inside when someone has hahaha
so they have this machine is full of
functional MRI machine and they hook
people up and it could have inside this
volunteers again and this time the
problem was how we make them have at aha
moment ready
so the researchers gave them a problem
to solve this is the problem that they
asked them to solve on date
word it creates a compound word and I’ll
never a compound word it’s like cheese
and cake he puts together a new word a
compound word cheesecake so fine a
polymer that creates a compound word
with each of these pine crab to sauce
and what they found was that as they
were watching those brains go to work on
that they could tell who was going to
have an aha moment by as much as eight
seven seemed like a long time
Mississippi’s eight minutes and they
could almost read someone’s mind
well that next thought was going to be
if they determine it and it was based on
something fall out the words
now I’m not scientists but I know that
when you have a lot of them that
indicate that’s what you have it’s
making those connections anytime you
have those connections available to you
and you can join them together
that’s where creativity is that’s what
you can have
but sometimes we find that it kind of it
can be kind of difficult to get started
to have that first thought the leather
brain start danger I’ll bet you’ve had
that moment but you had some great ideas
so when I think of that I think of pop
helped me get started
so my brain is saying I so you can do
its key its oh and it’s beep these bands
were playing you can ask yourself things
like all right
I think I will wear next year for my
birthday party I like to do this that’s
plan another question you can ask
yourself
it’s observe you can ask the
breakthrough service is what I see what
do I see that I haven’t noticed yet who
isn’t a color and get people watching
different or people watching
yeah can be really interesting to think
of the stories that might be associated
with someone’s life and thirdly it’s
ponder to think how does what if oh why
does something happen those are great
starting points to get your brain
working and another thing that you can
do after you you whatever frame of
danger you want other activities until
you can do they keep you rolling and
keep your imagination going that your
creativity and you have some great ideas
one of the things that you might want to
do is you go into the summer months
there’s a come up with a list of great
things to do you might have on that list
a lot of the things that you already
have you might add to that create a cold
or have a photo shoot with lots of great
costumes for make a video alright play
story scavenger hunt make an obstacle
course there are tons of great things
that you can do that are creative and
will add lots and lots of dots into your
brain that you can make those creative
combinations those creative connections
when you use those you’ll find that you
are going to be able to embrace boredom
that’s where I’m really asking all of
you to do today the next time you feel
overboard going on I want you to shift
you think
just a little bit find lot of pictures
that we were looking at earlier so you
may see when you shift your thinking you
may see the other city young woman you
may see a picture poco standing on the
side of the lake or in that same picture
you may see an infant lying on its back
[Applause]
you might see a boy
[Applause]
the profile of a man we’re in that same
picture couples standing underneath an
archway
[Applause]
when we shift your brain just a little
bit and let your brain see something
that’s unique and new I’m going to
challenge each and every one of you here
today all of you my challenge you I
challenge you all the next time you feel
this word starting to come out in your
mouth I’m bored I want you to stop shift
your thinking just a little bit and let
your brain go out and play go find your
own kind of tiger and have some fun
thank you so very much
[Applause]
