Take a break | TEDxYouth@HGS | Ms. Eva Singh | TEDxYouth@HGS

[Applause]
the true sign of intelligence is not
information but imagination this is a
code I read every time I go to the
principal’s office
a black card on the wall something that
Albert Einstein said many years ago but
what our schools are doing today is
filling our minds with information the
moa are able to cram the better student
you are supposed to be the system with a
strict curriculum timelines and cutoff
expectation throttles us they are not
giving us a chance to create innovate
and discover a world which is yet lying
and explode before us by restricting our
thoughts and ideas it is as if
everything known to man is all that
exists and has already been discovered
not true I’m sure picture a child who is
left to ruminate and the wide outdoors
without being told what and how and then
has to come up with an idea project or
anything you won’t believe the enormous
amount of creative ideas he’ll come up
with there must be a scope for this kind
of idea ting in the school schedule and
curriculum we don’t want a generation of
photocopy machines but a generation of
innovators for this to really happen the
policy makers should really work on a
paradigm and curriculum design
generating creativity and imagination
should become the objectives of teaching
and classrooms I’ve heard a Bloom’s
taxonomy that my teacher speak of during
lesson planning does it have a room to
include creativity one must get this
very clear imagination is not just
limited to reading fairy tales or dragon
tales it is something far beyond this
imagination is something that has
created the world we now live in all the
things which we see around us were first
someone’s imagination
they were first bill didn’t minds
and dren and then bought brought to the
real world do you think all that can be
created is over and done with there is
nothing more that can be done now no to
enhance the potential of imagination
co-curricular activities helped a lot
and these should be taken seriously by
every school as they’re a source of
bringing out one’s own thoughts emotions
creativity out life not a bad idea to
give marks not grades for these
activities other good ways could be
nature walks speaking out classes
through which many no.8 have ideas come
out basically all that you have to do is
do nothing don’t give a kid any facts
suggestions just that his/her
imagination flow another thing can you
imagine what are your preparing for
board examination does to a young child
the stress and strain of long boring
facts and figures worksheets mock papers
and parents breathing down your neck
we are tiring our brains on a huge scale
that’s why I feel taking a break over a
year or two after class 10th can be a
great idea let’s call it take a break
and grow course the educational system
should now be shaped in such a way that
of a kid plots to take a year off he or
she should be permitted to have the
option to do so just as the students and
us have the option of going to grammar
school and high school those who don’t
want to pass university go to the high
school and complete the education we in
India must get the option of taking a
year off to pursue an interest like
music dance drama social service or
anything that they wish to do even an
internship and their chosen future plan
think about it
believe me it will be a great thing not
only will they get and out of academic
experience of a career they’ll work with
renewed energy and learn as much as they
can about the realized scenario through
that year gap they would even be able
gained a certain amount of maturity this
is an experience that school counselors
in concurrence with parents should helps
student achieve placements but for this
as I said parents have to remove their
blinkers and think progressive wait a
minute I know what you are thinking
let me put it straight here it doesn’t
make any difference if you take a break
from academics if you are able to learn
something out of it is something
positive is coming out of it and I even
know most people sitting over here won’t
agree with this I with this idea because
we Indians for generations are said to
believe that he must follow a certain
fixed career path and that is first you
need to complete your schooling then
college afterwards job and then
retirement that’s it but that’s not how
it should be learning has no age limits
then and one more thing by taking a
break will only get a fresh per sec
perspective then we’ll have new
discoveries more ideas more
entrepreneurs and more of everything for
any new idea to ferment one must take a
step out of it and look at the things
from the outside any takers
thank you [Applause]
