Shifting Gears from Survival to Significance | TEDxYouth@HGS | Mr. Anil Thomas | TEDxYouth@HGS

[Applause]
how many of you sitting here if ever to
ask you a question that you think you
could have achieved far more than what
you have achieved so far if I can see
your hands if I were to ask you how many
of you have had this frustration of
seeing somebody less talented than you
somebody less intelligent than you but I
have achieved far more than what you
have achieved and how many of you have
worked for organisations which started
with great promise but never live to see
their own potential maybe not so that’s
good
but you know I have been the 90/10 guy
or the 1090 guy and I have always been
passionate about understanding why is it
that you know it is the 10% people
working in any organization that tend to
attract over 90% opportunities and why
is it that the 90% people working in the
same organization are fighting for the
left over 10% opportunities I see some
students here and I want to ask us why
is it that just a 10% of the class
thinks to get 90% opportunities and why
is it that the 90 percent of the class
wonders why I am NOT able to make it and
that’s why I want to use shifting gears
as a metaphor and help us to decode what
is it that 10% people do differently
what is it that the 10% organizations do
differently even as I am talking from
1956 to 2016 out of the fortune 500
companies 88% of them have vanished they
are no longer there in the last 18 years
half of the fortune 500 company
do not even exist so in this 15 minutes
that I have I just want to dive deep and
help you understand three reasons why
shift gears and also maybe three or four
principles of what it takes to shift
gears starting with the first reason I
think we need to shift gears is because
human beings were designed not just to
exist but to grow that’s the way we have
been designed we never read the sign
just to have an ordinary existence but
to live a life of significance now my
memory goes back to the time and my
journey and my pursuit started to
understand why 10% people do exceedingly
well and it happened on a particular day
which I recognize my turning point and I
failed as an entrepreneur and that was
way back in 2000 and in that period I
got married business was not doing well
and my wife was working and to just top
it all you know I was in a situation
where the cash flows had dried up there
was nothing coming in and they were
fixed expenses which were going out
month after month and if you know
anything about business is all about
confidence and my confidence was at its
lowest low because at that point in time
my wife was working and 6054 rupees
every month was cut from her salary for
a loan which I had taken before marriage
so I was in the lowest low that you can
ever imagine but I believe that was a
specific incident and I also believe
that behind every successful man there
is a woman but not only that I also
believe that behind every successful man
there is a woman who keeps saying you
are wrong you are wrong you are wrong
you are wrong and most of the time she’s
and it happened that day that we were
having a fight and you know I don’t know
how you guys fight those who of you are
married but in my case I’ll tell you the
first minutes about her and me the
second minute is about her people and my
people the third minute is about you
know the place that she came from and
the place that I came from you know
that’s how it goes but on this
particular day you know I was upset and
I was you know going fully ballistic and
my wife was calm and she was you know
just silent I didn’t know because
sometimes you just need that cue from
there you know to keep on and after four
minutes nothing is happening so she
looked at me she said I said what she
said you said whatever you wanted to say
I said yeah she said I want to tell you
only one thing and this is what I want
I cannot explain what that word did to
me but that word ordinary spun in my
head it made me cry like a baby
I slumped on the floor 20 minutes later
I got up with a prayer God make me
anything but don’t make me ordinary and
that’s why I believe human beings are
designed not just to exist or live an
ordinary life we are designed for
something extraordinary
the second reason I think we need to
shift gears is because just like a car
if you don’t shift gears and if you’re
stuck on gear number three and you have
no knowledge of how to get into four you
will only be making noise and pushing
the pedal that is the accelerator
because of the pressure that you have
from yourself and because of the
pressure that people put on you and we
all know on third gear you can press as
much as you want the accelerator but
there’s only so much that you can
achieve in terms of progress and reason
number three I think we need to shift
gears because I believe one day we need
to give an account for all the talents
for all the opportunities that we were
provided with so on that context let me
share with you about three principles of
shifting gears and here I just want to
talk about principle number one and that
is you know it’s an inside-out game and
that is what one needs to understand
shifting gears is not an outside-in game
it’s an inside-out game 90% of the
people are conditioned
to believe that things will change for
them when things outside will change and
I think media also has a role there
because we somehow tend to believe that
my life will change if the economy
changes my life will change if the
government changes my life will change
if so and so will change yeah but
nothing is further from the truth our
life will only change when we change
because it’s an inside out game not an
outside in game you give me a person I
will have a conversation with them for
15 minutes and I can reasonably and
accurately tell you that this person is
talking about the inside out game or
outside in game and I will share the
secret when you are speaking to anyone
about any particular challenge and when
you are discussing why things are not
happening if the person has an outside
in game three things you will notice
they will justify they will blame they
will complain but if somebody is playing
an inside out game they’ll be focused on
two things and that is what is it that I
want and how to get it yeah so the first
principle is it’s not an outside-in game
it’s an inside-out game you know we also
need to recognize when to shift gears
and this is how I like to explain it you
know the concept of three circles and
how we can be mindful about shifting
gears now these three circles the first
is about your ability the second is
about your passion and the third is
there are things which you can do there
are things which you want to do and
there are things which you have to do
but you know what you can understand
that you need to shift gears if your
life is moving in any one of these
circles which means you can do things
but somehow you do not have the passion
or nobody’s going to pay you for doing
that
sometimes we may be wanting to do things
but we do not have the ability and
nobody’s gonna pay us and sometimes it’s
also possible that somebody’s paying us
for doing something but somehow we are
not having the passion we are not having
the ability and that’s why this becomes
the sweet spot this is a sweet spot and
it should be our endeavor to get into
this sweet spot now the question is how
do we get into the sweet spot if you ask
me from whatever I know about people and
performance you need to start from here
everybody in this room has been given
something which falls in their area of
responsibility and if you start doing
the small things in an exceptional
manner in the area of your
responsibility it has an ability to pull
you towards the center very soon you
will not have to chase your passion your
passion will find you and very soon
there’ll be people who will recognize
your ability but most of all I think the
takeaway is that you will be the
happiest person on earth because most of
the time you are doing things which you
can do which you want to and which you
have to so that’s the second principle
when do we know that we are out of gear
and our response has to be to just get
into this sweet spot of success the
third thing I want to share here is it’s
not about just the gears because we all
know that a vehicle runs on fuel but for
you and me that fuel is purpose you know
the purpose of life is to live a life of
purpose some of you may say well I don’t
know worse my purpose then that becomes
your purpose
discover why is it that God sent you
because remember I said one day you and
I have to give an account yeah and now
the third thing I want to share is that
shifting gears is not just about being
intuitive it is also about being counter
intuitive it will not make sense and
that’s why 10% people tend to do those
things which 90% people fail to
understand why they are doing understand
the game and in being counterintuitive I
want to share two things number one in
every vehicle we have something called
as a reverse gear progress is not always
about moving forward progress is also
about stopping pausing and sometimes the
best thing you could ever do is to
retreat
and then move ahead and the last thing I
want to share is about being
counterintuitive shifting gears and
becoming a person of impact and
influence getting into this 10% who tend
to attract 90% opportunities time and
time again you need to remember it’s not
about you it’s about others
it’s not about what you will get it’s
about what you will give what are the
problems you’ll be able to solve for
people what are the opportunities that
you will be able to create for others
and I just want to close this by doing
an exercise which I hope you will never
ever remember did I say that wrong well
I want to do an exercise which you will
never ever forget and this is what I
want you to do it’s an exponential
exercise I want you to do two things
when I say get you need to breathe in
and when I say give you need to breathe
out simple get give
get get get get keep getting you know if
we keep getting without giving we will
choke to that
but I am a behavior analyst and I see
somebody in the crowd saying oh the
opposite is also true but my dear
friends it is never the gettin that
begins the process of receiving it is
always giving that begins the process of
receiving
so in conclusion live the best life God
intended for us you and I were not
designed to exist but to live a life of
exists significance influence and impact
and one day we need to give an account
thank you very much [Applause]
