Rediscovering your world | The Bottle Boys | TEDxDornbirn

ah thank you children tend to use items
in any way they see fit it can be for
whatever purpose fits their needs or in
whatever way he seems meaningful to them
for a child a kitchen sink can be a
swimming pool for at all she can be a
partner not a toy cars and bottle can be
a waterproof container or any kind of
small items
despite the creativity this is obviously
not the intended purpose of the items a
kitchen sink is for cooking or for doing
the dishes himself or wearing on the
feet and cotton is for drinking or
pouring from these are the proper uses
of the items right or white tilde sizes
have other properties is it just
convenient for us to label things for
their functionality instead of their
possibilities I’m going to dig into this
area and document that a certain amount
of this childish view on the world has
much greater potential than the examples
I just gave I’m going to do an example
of how a childish silly idea
combined with passion and persistence
can become something quite unique in
fact I want you that practicing this
childishness is a necessary tool for any
kind of innovation I know that many of
you in the audience have a water bottle
with you like this one please pick it up
fill one don’t be shy and open it
yeah something good already
I you know what we’re going so you do
like me develop like this and look
downwards diagonally as if you were
blown out of cattle to reduce the sound
the one
[Music]
all right good job
all right this is better than I expected
thank you thank you I don’t know what
else to do now though you already know
for us so you may notice that there’s a
different pitches different songs out
there right
in short the more hair bottle the lower
the pitch if you think the content the
tongue would go down this can give
anything to experiment with for a few
minutes on this maybe with your child or
just plain childish which brings me to
our story we are caught guys that met at
the University of Copenhagen in Denmark
where we from where we studied using
another party with no instruments
somebody started painting external
another guy would join now a researcher
we can cycle I guess I was just a few
bottles each we’re going to be able to
combine them differently to play over
the series of course
now this was getting interesting so much
so that we couldn’t just stop here so we
left the party to get a room and
practiced at this point we’re over to
trained musicians so we knew the theory
but we didn’t know the instrument but
within a few hours we went back and we
turned this university party into a
musical bottle he killed everybody the
audience the unsuspecting audience and
asked the decisions ourselves everybody
was having a blast it was so much fun
faint music in such an unconventional
way and at the same time cost of
musicians everything was done with a lot
of effort in quick precision and at this
point none of us had any idea how far
this thing would go to be fair it didn’t
sound everyone in the beginning we want
to trade on our new instruments and we
actually had a hard time paying without
laughing but there was something about
this idea that was so exceptionally
down-to-earth that we just hacked we saw
some kind of great potential in it so we
did it again at the next party and the
next part of that and I thought we went
to the streets of Copenhagen to see how
a different audience would react and
guess what saying reaction people
wouldn’t matter what they were doing
they would listen they would smile
glad and they would put money in the Hat
so we will start expanding our arsenal
of bottles to play more and more
advanced forms and it began looking
something like this
and this is for 15 minutes of concert
with all the bottles needing individual
tuning so logistically this was a
nightmare
so through experimentation and natural
selection these tapes you get up
honestly died out and Alec who answers
arose the bus already made from deceased
photos and duct tape now you could
exchange the terms and shoot them
separately we also as edit other
instruments such as the bubble shakers
and the paste them made from a water
tank I’ve also practiced and and
inventing new techniques to counteract
some of the difficulties on failing
bottles one is that we have a limited
number of terms at some point there’s a
physical limitation I’m sure you get it
but limitations has a little bit on our
rate our songs too so we found great
around this if a melody is simply too
fast to be played well let’s split it
between two musicians so sure it’s
tricky and it’s hard to learn but it
literally makes the impossible possible
let me show you what I mean caspere’s
good have you played in half of a bass
line
hello let’s see if you

all right

with POTUS and it didn’t sound very good
back then this is actually a combination
of many years music education a whole
lot of practice and inability to accept
limitations it’s not a talent and it
wasn’t inspired by an existing issue
it’s just some decisions we don’t know
how to quit we wanted to fit music using
everyday items that we wanted to do it
so good that it would become almost
unbelievable our question was how we
could reach a lot of people so we
started traveling out into the world a
few weeks every summer we would travel
around Europe and play for all kinds of
people and no matter the audience people
would smile loud clattering and dancing
so here is a picture from our last
street performances in it so we took
this for two years and we kept talking
about that the band had to have some
greater potential than this with this
appearance apparent appeal to almost
everyone with it so one Titan in 2011 we
agreed about giving this thing a shot
trying to become a professional
international band we had to step it up
on this thing would simply dial and this
determination changed everything
we started recognizing ourselves as a
real professional band and our own
respect for what we were doing really
wait our ambitions were maybe not as far
as players we have peered so over the
next few years the private concerts
became
corporate events the university parties
became festivals and talent shows and
traveling to play on the streets that
were faced with in hired to play
concerts all over the world so deep we
did reinvent ourselves and this would
turn up to feed on in the beginning
because at the same time sites like
YouTube were beginning to give in it so
we put this
catch a little rehearsal video on this
side and it got a lot of attention so we
realized later than everybody else
I know that the internet was a great
opportunity for us to spread our music
on the planet and we see mean we got the
same reactions on the Internet as we did
plain in the alive and furthermore we
finally got the confirmation that we
really did manage to push this concept
so far that it had become untenable some
of our internet fans took that turn
quite literal in their expression of
fascination with what we do and what is
more powerfully says today
create and while there’s no part of me
wishes that they knew that we are
actually doing this a much larger part
of me is saying how amazing that these
people find it so unbelievable but
they’ve had to spread the word to the
world
that this has to be faced by now we have
been doing this professionally for five
six years and we’re still banned in the
concept by making studio recordings
megandave created videos women in
commercials and collaborations with
other musicians and even orchestras my
belief is that what it would take just
focus would be stopping being creative
we are doing to expand this concept or
we’re going to dry out like an open
bottle at the Sun as you can imagine we
have some different reactions to
explaining the world around us what we
do if we could count the number of times
we that people say things like so what’s
the real plan for it aren’t you spending
too much time on those bottles or how
about could it work that if it into
something with the future and done those
the same voices are saying so wait
another next before I loved in your
video or even how lucky you are to be
able to be paid traveling on Tinian
music okay I believe that a common side
effect of getting older and wiser is
also getting accustomed to using the
world around us the way it is intended
we stop questioning and start answering
and sometimes this comes at the cost of
creativity and creativity is not just a
tool we pick up whenever we need it
it’s a coiler meant of being a human
being it enables us to have a
conversation or improvise the solution
when something goes wrong and as it
happens just a few days ago our Portland
affinity you have two counselor
dispensed to this very conference due to
a family emergency
we’ve been preparing for so long and
this was an absolute disaster for us we
couldn’t show you guys how best anymore
we have no substitutes the eldest
trainer when
the world with this peculiar set of
skills so we had to cancel all my weight
at all but then again looking at the
topic of it it didn’t take us long to
decide that we had to find aware of this
even though this would mean rewriting a
lot of the talk and all of the music for
the three of us so now we’re going to
perform at elevate three men version
about biggest you two did and Jamaica or
the missing member each of us is going
to be performing

creativity like all other skills to be
perfected through practice once we start
allowing ourselves to be childish and
silly we can discover a lot of things
that we couldn’t see before
in addition to pin fun or business
creative is you can easily be stopped
halfway to the crate idea because of
grown-up rational thinking and the earth
making mistakes but keep in mind that
creativity is making mistakes but also
if you don’t pick it up and put and put
a lot of weight into it that great idea
is never gonna music kindergarten
thank you
