¿Pueden los tatuajes ayudarnos a conocer nuestro estado de salud? | Katia Canepa | TEDxTukuy

do not
[Music]
imagine that with the simple fact of
eyelashes you can turn on a light
or that with you you could pay the meter or
with the simple act of touching your hair
you could send a message I’m going to
tell how these ideas can be
out probably but you from a
science fiction tale but really
can be reality today a while ago
back I was in charge of selling licenses
of software then what I was doing was
use a tool that someone else will
created and make other people the
use
however I started thinking how could
stop doing that as it could happen
to become a creator and stop
be a user
it was so I discovered the investigation the
research gives you this great privilege
to get up every day and think what is
what I want to create today
of generating new knowledge in a
unexplored territory
to reinvent the world in which you want
live
and so I decided to go to Brazil to study a
masters and doctorate in science of the
computing
and it was during my PhD that my advisor
He told me he sent me to Hong Kong but
not a science faculty of
computing but a faculty of art
and I started to see how it is that artists
create
I was used to thinking about
solve problems this is the problem
this is the solution
this is the problem this is the solution
and when I was talking to the artists and
I asked them and I saw their projects and
I told them what the problem is and what is
the solution I understood that the artists
they move for a passion they try to look
a new question
like the 100 ready
if today I told them
that there are no problems in the world
What would you do
then we would start doing
new questions
the research that was done is called
beauty technology which is a way of
place technology on the surface of
our body and make these two
square meters of skin that we have
become an iteration platform
is within this context of flight
the device states that we already wear
be it in clothes or accessories these watches
that count how many steps we take or that
he saw us send a notification when
an email arrives
but if you think about these
devices we do not have to incorporate
in our personal style
every day today I am
wearing this clothes this watch the day of
tomorrow could be others
but my skin my hair and my nails will be
the same
then how could we do so
technology is much closer to
our body
what we did was convert cosmetics
traditional in interactive cosmetics
as for example these false eyelashes
that with the simple fact of eyelashes
can make a drone fly or you’re
nails that have a chip like having
technology at the tip of your fingers that
would allow you for example to open the
office door or pay starbucks or
turn off the meter or this hair
intelligent that what you do connects to
a circuit that is connected to your
cellular and with the simple act of touching
your hair
could you send a message
so how do we make our
body not only hide technology
when using makeup but also that the
iteration that we do with the
devices are hidden
this project may be applied
several contexts from a context of
security for example where a girl
that is in a dangerous situation with
the simple act of touching your hair
could send your location to the
police or some family member or also by
example we work with a person who
have a disability that can not move the
body and with these this makeup
conductive with the simple fact of
blinking could have independence and
change the channel we write a book
where we not only count these ideas
but we also share the circuits
until the chemical processes so that
anyone can execute it because
we think that knowledge must be
currently shared there are many more
researchers working in these
topics including startups that have
created to have these nails with chips
to pay for the subway in london in japan
or in china
then to my doctorate I participated to a
contest a cosmetics contest
Smart was more or less what
I did was organized between the
natura cosmetics company and I issued
medialab this lab that for me
it was a dream
and the winner would go to this lab
as a visiting student
and just before they give the results
he approaches me and tells me in catia not you
make you sad but you will not walk
the feeling was that I did wrong
and then he tells me you’re not going to win because
We want you to come not as a student
but as a researcher
and that was great for me because now
could be in this lab where
At some point, I would have simply
wanted to go and take a self in the
door but now it was part of the state
of researchers and I was doing a
post doctorate
this is a laboratory inside a
of the main universities of the
world where they create futuristic technology and
being in a place so disruptive me
I started thinking how we can do
slightly more intrusive technology of the
that he was already doing instead of
place technologies on the skin how
place it inside the skin
and it was so we joined a group of
researchers from an artist a
designer
a scientist and a group of
researchers from the medical school in
harvard to answer this new
Question
the skin can be a display the skin of
in case it manifests itself of many
forms when you feel embarrassed you
you put red
when you eat something that makes you a little
I could give you acne when you have
some allergy that could leave pimples
then our emotions diseases
and feeding are revealed through
of our skin however there is a lot
information that was not revealed
when for example I wanted to know which
are your cholesterol levels do you
a blood test or whenever I want
know what your anemia levels are
if you have any other infection
including types of cancer
you need about various types of
tests
and what we started to think about is how
we can make the skin reveal the
internal changes that are within
our body
hundreds of years ago humans
they modify the skin in several ways
of them are tattoos tattoos
what you do is injected into the
skin an ink then we got to
think what would happen if instead of
use a traditional ink to
make tattoos we use biosensors
that would allow us to do that in a
tattoo becomes interactive and
it changes color but that is a
biosensor if you can think through
example in these tests that women
they make pregnancy where they have these
strips and so they change color indicating
your hormone level and if you are pregnant
or not
or these devices that many people
who have diabetes use that are more
little ones that your cell phone to be able to
determine your glucose levels these
are some types of biosensors
then the old sensors what
they do is determine certain certain level
or certain certain capacity of an element
and translates it to for example a color
how can we do to make these
tests are on the surface of
our body
we create biosensors
that could be inside the skin and
that change color
we use ph sodium biosensors and
of glucose because they are the ones in
greater concentration within the skin
then imagine that you can change
one color to another depending on what
this is happening and how are they
changing your account bolis mo
for example, if your levels of
sugar change could be a start
your tattoo of a purple color and could
suddenly change to a pink color and
with that if somebody for example
have diabetes their sugar levels
they go up and down they could just see their
tattoo and know when they need
more insulin and there are many applications
that can be created from these
tattoos
and the truth is hundreds of people who
They have written us with their desire to use
those tattoos mainly of people
who have diabetes problems some
of them told us that they are punctured
10 times a day for more than 40 years for
be able to know your glucose levels
with this tattoo they could just see
the color and know when they need
more insulin
or for example other people who do not
they know what their level of absorption of
fluids and they could have those tattoos
of sodium where they could determine when
is that they need to be more hydrated
they do not want people who would like
place that on animals where the
animals can not communicate can not
transmit their symptoms but we could
see by means of a tattoo
or people who do not even
they imagined this in astronauts because they did not
they can do
blood tests for many months but
if they could control their levels of
health through treatment
this project is called davis gun that
its translation into Spanish would be the abyss
bad green that what it does is reveal the
various levels that may exist
inside your body
instead of using devices
We use biosensors that do not
they need batteries or cables to be able
interact to be visualized
it’s a new way of being able
continuously monitor what is
happening inside of you and have access to
information that is inside your body
but it is important to mention that this
project is not yet available at
public and there are many tests by
do until we can do the
tests on humans
what we wanted is to show the
biotechnologists this new possibility of
use interfaces completely
different as in the case of
tattoos and combine them with our
biology
I am currently a professor at the
University of California in Davis and my
laboratory is responsible for creating
disruptive and different interfaces that
may be on the skin and the surface
of the body in how we can reinvent
various concepts from tattoos or
cosmetics that could now be
interactive and where they could coexist
with our biology
mainly how can we create a
fusion that is indistinguishable between the
human body and technology where the
technology could not necessarily be
just an extension of your body but
it could also be part of your body
thank you very much
