Program to learn, don’t learn to program | Daniel Stoiber & Sam Mendelson | TEDxDesignTechHighSchool

in fourth grade my mom told me about
scratch a visual programming language I
kind of ignored it at first and only
looked at it maybe once a month I just
kind of played the games I never decided
to make my own but in fifth grade she
started bugging me about my learning my
multiplication facts she decided to
download an app for me but me being my
stubborn self said I don’t need some app
I’ll make my own that’s how I got into
scratch I made this really terrible
scratch game that got a total of eight
views so I was really excited about
making this game that I decided to make
a new version just one day later my goal
wasn’t to learn programming it was to
learn the dredgen multiplication tables
but in the process I felt like I became
a better programmer in the ninth grade I
I’m sorry when I played Minecraft in the
first second and third grades
I played online and I really wanted to
chat with the other players who typed
messages incredibly quickly and as I
played this game that I really loved I
not just built my typing skills but as
well I also built my economic skills by
buying selling and trading commodities
when we came to Dee tag at first we
noticed that almost every single website
that we like to visit was blocked we
kind of took this as a challenge so we
decided to use modern web tools like
like JavaScript and api’s from companies
like YouTube to make a tool that can
circumvent all this we were quite
successful we we were able to visit
different websites that we wanted to and
as we continued we found that the skills
that we developed like testing
experimenting and building on what we’ve
made have just grown as we have and that
as we work we really come to build the
future of technology thank you very much [Applause]
