hello hello welcome to the Ted X Sydney
show an introduction my name is a nd why
your name’s what pleased to meet you how
are you how are you thanks for asking
I’m good too now let’s get started let’s
all dance let’s all sing let’s all sign
and have a real good time yay yay me yay
us thank you my name is Andy dexterity
and I love expressing myself with my
body
I have adventured far and wide and
discovered things like dancing gesture
mime and sign language and they are all
very useful forms of physical
communication they’re useful in loud
places in quiet places in faraway places
places places in underwater places in
windowed places and in private places
and in dark places there are some
languages designed specifically to
communicate tactile II through the use
of touch like tactile sign language now
not only physical communications that’s
now a word not only a physical no only
is physical communication useful but
some people rely on it every single day
the World Health Organization states
that 5 percent of the world’s population
has some difficulty accessing the
average hearing range that is 360
million people about 15 Australia’s
worth of people that may never hear the
tune – happy birthday
so not only is it
is fall but it’s very fun and maybe our
little interaction here today is gonna
make the world a better place so you may
be saying to be now Jorge I’ve always
wanted to learn sign language I don’t
have time it’s 2017 or or like oh that
sounds too big and complex for me well
I’m here today to tell you that you have
everything you need you have a body you
have a need to express yourself and you
already have some vocabulary inside you
trapped up waiting to come out
for example the wave let’s all turn away
to someone right now you can wave at me
don’t pretend someone’s waving at you
give them a real wave isn’t that
wonderful isn’t it great to connect and
be acknowledged by somebody else so nice
oh here’s another one
okay do it with me oh okay beautiful in
some countries that means a homosexual
oh my goodness
oh my goodness that’s a new one let’s do
this one together oh my goodness
and if it’s very shocking it can be oh
my goodness okay back to things that we
already know thumbs up good one mate
deal with me good one mate good one I’m
in some countries this means you’re
gonna stick it up somewhere turn it
upside down and we can kill someone in
ancient Roman times pointing also very
useful me you there that up down disco
in some places pointing is offensive so
we can replace it with an open palm me
you there up down
disco doesn’t quite work but it still
looks kind of cool
yeah in India some people point with
their middle finger like this in
Australia this finger takes on many
different meanings depending on where
you do it and how you use it if I do it
down here like this it means available
is there any food available are you
available I’m available if we do with
two hands we can go on a holiday and if
we stick it up here like this it becomes
the tallest tower in Sydney Harbour on
the count of three let’s all do the
tallest tower in Sydney Harbour ready 1
2 3 yeah
[Music]
sign language is very visual and to the
point if you have been indulging in
chocolate or ice cream you may be
greeted with a sign like this not
because it’s rude but because you’ve
been indulging in ice cream for the past
few months sign names are very visual a
girl named raylene with curly hair might
be signed like this and are coming down
in curls behind the ear as someone named
Sebastian may be signed like this
referencing the crab from The Little
Mermaid someone named Emma may be signed
like this because she’s a little bit
crazy Daniela my first sign language
teacher Daniela with a D and a and it
talks like this because Daniela talks a
lot Daniela gifted me with the sign name
of Andi which is the a finger
AEIOU hey around the eyes like a pair of
glasses which I used to wear Oh joining
in this is great and as my moustache
grew and I lost the need to wear glasses
my sign name migrated down to my lip
where my moustache now resides so my
name is Andi but not all andis and E’s
and not all sign languages are the same
sign language here in Australia
Australia let’s do this one middle
fingers ready we’re going to pick up the
convicts and put them down there
this is the sign for sign do with me
sign and this is universal you can do
this anywhere in the world and people
will know what you’re talking about and
this is language to capital ELLs
together like this and we open them up
oh look a language so we have Australian
sign language yay also known as Auslan
Roslyn also needs our nationally
recognized sign language here in
Australia used mostly by the deaf
community and we have a northern dialect
and n going up and a southern dialect
and s going down which is a descendant
of British sign language and Irish sign
language when they migrated over here
during the European colonisation but
prior to that we already had 20
indigenous sign languages some which are
still in use today in times of mourning
hunting walkabout and speech taboo and
that’s just a hand scape here in
Australia globally we have over 300
different sign languages in use today so
it’s all very much alive and flicking
now I may hear you say hey Andy this is
all fantastic but I only have one hand
well that’s okay some sign languages
have a two hand alphabet like Auslan and
British sign language we have a b c d e
f bit a little and so on and so forth
some sign languages have a one handed
alphabet like in America and Ireland
like this a b c d e f so on and so forth
this one is very handy this one’s very
handy if you’re doing the shopping or if
you’ve got a drink in your hand you can
still chat away
you can literally talk with your mouth
full it’s fantastic um but then I hear
you say hey Andy I don’t have hands and
I say that’s okay I’ve developed an
alphabet for your feet the AL foot bet
it’s a twenty six gesture system for
your feet so you can spell anything and
express your soles but I do say hey Andy
I don’t have feet and I say that’s okay
I’ve got an alphabet for your face hmm
okay and so on and so forth it’s quite
embarrassing to do in public but um it’s
effective and it just cramps a little
bit but there’s nothing we can’t master
together now the thing I love most about
sign language is translating music song
and poetry into movement transcending
linguistic barriers in creating a
universally understood moving picture
with my body for example I come from a
land down under could be signed like
this I come from a land down under if I
wanted to adopt sign language grammar I
could sign me from where Australia or if
I wanted to get very visual with it
which I do I could sign world me there
yeah
isn’t it cool and then I were to
incorporate the feel of the music like
this and maybe a bit of the character of
the person singing I come from a land
down under let’s do it together ready
here we go seven I am I come from a land
down under Oh beautiful yay okay I now
want to show you a couple of my favorite
signs this is a helicopter everybody do
the helicopter with helicopter mouth
helicopter goes up helicopter goes down
helicopter goes up now it’s floating all
around let’s do the cops sing with me
and the kite goes up that’s beautiful
and the kite goes down and the kite goes
up and now it’s floating all around
let’s see the parachute parachute goes
up high here
a parachute goes down beautiful
parachute parachute goes up now it’s
floating all around yeah
now if you forget those three science
today that’s okay as long as you
remember this next one okay this is
really important you’re concentrating
i-l-y I love you I love you I love you
and I do and share this one around it
does get confused a lot for the devil
and rock and rock on a small difference
of a little phalange here yeah I love
you I’m thank you for listening to me
and for watching thank you yes this is
clapping we’re gonna clap again and yay
look at that ocean of hounds I’m gonna
cry okay and before I go I’m going to
put my hands where my mouth is and I’m
going to put some of this into practice
for you if I don’t fall back
