Photography in the digital age | Alex Pravat | TEDxTeslaSTEMSchool

emotionally first asked me to be in for
this event
I was overwhelmed or as
in a speech in front of this many people
before but it was also nerve-wracking
I’ve never given a speech in front as
many people before the theme of the
event is in focus which only seems
appropriate because that’s why I
struggled to do the most as a
photographer as I was thinking about
what to reply if the Vice commies email
and quickly realize something I show you
so much of my work but I never talk
about what goes into it or how I got to
where I am and that’s perhaps the most
important part of any art so here I am
today let’s start from the beginning I
think we can all agree but it takes
incredible amount of courage to drop
everything and pursue art especially
photography for one year is absurdly
expensive
I remember watching my summer go by and
ten hour increments as I work palace
ships before my first camera but for
some a couple grand is nothing to drop
on a new piece of equipment the new line
content for example has a suggested
retail price of seven thousand dollars
that’s for the body alone arrival lens
for the young system cost you almost
double the price
then when two camera systems such as
Hasselblad’s and face ones which range
from pulp I don’t know thirty to fifty
five thousand dollars of course the
lense isn’t included either I don’t know
about you but I’d rather be driving
around one of these then have a camera
that’s marginally better than a
full-frame Nikon my point is it’s really
easy to get discouraged browsing through
photography catalog and looking
prices they say the best camera is the
one you always have with you and thank
you modern technology please study
photos with even the phone in your
pocket and even if you manage to get the
DSLR camera for a reasonable price you
still have to learn how to use it of
course the hieroglyphic symbols on each
button can feel an important language
they must learn from scratch it can be
really infuriating at first I want my
first camera in Salem Oregon to avoid
the sales tax we have here in Washington
thanks for the i-5 traffic of horrendous
eye traffic way up on the way back I was
able to go through the cover the manual
from cover to cover at least three times
but technically the technical details
are only half the lesson composition
oops
composition depth of field and lighting
are only some of the challenges that lay
ahead and you can only learn these
through experience so you must be truly
dedicated to devote hundreds of hours to
learning and master these concepts the
hardest part though in my opinion is
actually following through when the
aspiring photographers on camera and let
it sit on the bookshelf to collect dust
and they only bring it out for special
occasions all I have now is an expensive
paperweight with nothing to show for it
so how exactly are you supposed to stay
motivated how do you go out and shoot in
the state where it rains 364 days of the
year
the answer is passionate passion is it’s
one of my favorite words because it
suggests so many different names from
person to person for some it can be the
passion to create for others the passion
Foods fire the passions new to share and
it’s one of my favorite words it really
spooling your work and I think it’s one
of the greatest reports of modern
artists so what’s my passion then well I
aim to capture moments which is why I
find myself opening of adventure photos
and weddings mainly I feel like the
number one duty of a photographer today
is to immortalize the present so it was
a gift for the future photographs are
very important means of getting to know
the memories and stories that that
people share between each other that
families share that friendship and it’s
really important to share those memories
in between generations between families
etc or nothing about this place so if
all you really need this passion to
become a photographer then twice the
number of professional photographers
slowly declining today a couple of weeks
ago I read an article titled under
pressure from still positive
professional photographers individual
age now if I learned anything from my
years of grueling English courses it’s
certainly that thesis was novel on the
title but I continued reading the
article and the author Adrian hadlen
concludes that professional
photographers and photo journalists are
finding it harder and harder to secure
full-time employment in reliable income
we’ve already variations to the joke
before what’s the difference between the
photographer and a pizza well a pizza
can feed a family of four everyone jokes
about it but the truth is is true it’s
really hard for us to find work today
and they seem like a relatively
future-proof career right I mean
students graduated here
couples get engaged and married all the
time they even have kids the kind of
issues but my point is people are always
going to want pictures to remember how
beautiful their mega puss or how much
they spent on their ridiculously
over-the-top venue
however how is right the number of
professional photographers has
noticeably declined in recent years he
cites a survey almost 2,000 photo
journalists from over a hundred
different metrics paddlin and others
tracked income workers education levels
risk and ethical practices and many
others and what do they find
basically fewer respondents were working
full-time survivors from 74 percent in
2015 11 61% in 2016 instead you see a
rise in part-time work with respondents
undertaking other the darky related work
such as exhibitions weddings and books
but also work unrelated in photography
this raises the question what explains
the drastic decline the number of
professional photographers are people
just giving up are people just leave in
their accounts on your bookshelves well
half the answer is in the articles title
we’re in a digital age and some people
like the advent of digital photography
with huge corporations such as Canon
Nikon Sony
Domon digital
world and breaking technology to the
mainstream market traditional companies
like Fuji codec I’m getting physically
harder to research and develop there’s
no doubt that digital cameras are
cheaper and easier to use than film SLRs
and the learning curve is not escape
anyone can go into a pasta or a Walmart
and pick up a medium grade DSLR and
start taking pictures with it you know
they say everyone’s a photographer today
was such easy access to digital
photography the field is becoming more
saturated and professionals are finding
it harder and harder to find work
however some people blame the declining
value of art but I think the main reason
that photographers are finding it
difficult to survive is failure to adapt
like we all learned in high school
biology mitochondria is the powerhouse
this oh wait Darwin organisms compete to
survive and the weakest die out I
believe one thing to make sure in
regards to the photography world those
who follow trends and find their niche
enjoy famous success while the
stragglers are left behind right well
there’s a number of steps to keep up
first you have to find right laughs
morning
there’s so many out there today are we
supposed to choose them well Facebook is
where I share photos with my friend
family the complex privacy settings
allow me to share photos exactly what I
want this in them
Twitter them is what I use to connect
people with people more professionally
but I mean bother to use it once a week
or so I used to post on tumblr too but
it’s more of a creative inspiration
rather than Malik it’s a pretty
authentic with the vlog and a lot of
people get started with tumblr so I
recommend it to anyone starting a
website but I also post on Reddit too
although for the most part it serves as
a community where I ask questions and
find articles in the photography world
or you know with images of cats and then
they’re the more hardcore photo services
Liberec type as in Instagram I want to
talk about the latter because all these
are oriented towards photographers but
if you find most people using Instagram
right remember back in 2011 when its
grams the world’s largest database of
food pictures people would let their
chicken marsala plates in coal well they
have a creative caption for it however
the same people realize they upload
higher quality gives all our shots
instead of a grainy Lola – trust they
were used to amateur photographers began
sharing pictures from their rainy day
Heights and cascades or skylines in
Seattle and you know the community
matured and as it matures so the app
histograms developers I had countless
features that catered to the
professional market they removed the
measly 640 m by 6 under 48 pixel format
and allow for higher quality uploads
they eventually removed the squared
format – and they allowed people to post
vertical portraits or fit wider
landscapes on the screen they even added
analytical tools that help you track
your audience figure out what time to
pose what hashtags are most popular you
know who your audience was come
so basically they were making it easier
for people to enter the professional
world with a hat Instagram is an app
based exclusively on visuals to social
sharing and interaction this formula has
proven to be very successful Instagram
is the fastest growing almost populated
mobile social network on iOS and Android
today
not to mention Facebook recently
acquired them for over 1 billion dollars
and Instagram has 5 million photos
uploaded on a daily basis
5 million photos has a lot of selfies
was this much content being published
each day is almost impossible to have
the word notice unless you find a way to
stand out there’s a couple of tips that
I’ve acquired along the way to help you
grow more organically
first is consistency to be fair and
reverse is word around like it’s crispy
but what did it can mean well you need
to find a style and that goes way
further than simply applying your preset
when I say consistency I mean everything
from your shoes out your editing to what
kind of pose you know I think you shoot
my portraits in the shade or exactly
during sunset because when I’m editing
my photos they will all have the same
look and feel when I apply my preset of
course you shot midday and one shot
during sunset won’t look the same if you
apply the same settings to them and then
there’s the thing I mentioned earlier
with what time to pose a lot of people
figure out hey you know I usually post
that 7 plug I get a lot of reaction at 7
o’clock so I’m going to keep
yes I’m thought so then that person’s
followers start expecting content at 7
o’clock you know so whenever they’re out
on their phone during dinner they see
okay it’s a person content again I’m
going to keep going you know
and then there’s editing it took me
nearly three years to nail down my style
and it takes some people even longer
race photographers would change their
editing style every couple of months
which is amazing
my style is composed of kind of a crush
white sort of look where I bring them
highlights make mid-tones pop it’s easy
to explain but if you look through some
photos you’ll understand what I mean I
feel like I’m staffs in South and the
intimate mood
I love compliments and subjects and
sentence of my photos another tip for
drumming is a simple one that goes
beyond photography quality over quantity
about the urge to upload random shots
that don’t match your feed simply
because you have nothing better to close
don’t do this
it’s all about the quality right wait
until you have deep shot through your
Instagram feeds
look at me portfolio and imagine that
you’re presenting it for roomful of
people which mean I am but we’d imagine
you’re presenting it to a roomful of
people who are going to potentially hire
you for a way or an engagement or
something and imagine throwing himself
New York at the middle of all your
beautiful wedding work it doesn’t fit
right so if it doesn’t believe it don’t
put it there
ideally you want your feet to always
look at it to us even when you have
nothing else to boast but the greatest
tip I can offer prepared organically is
engagement no I don’t mean get down on
one knee it means I don’t find someone
in the same my life but if you want to
grow people according to the same style
as you are and connect with them I
suppose this works for any hobby music
especially but when it comes to
Instagram there’s a number of tools at
your disposal such as comments and
hashtags always good original comment
something like hey this is amazing or I
love the way you almost capture your
life is perfectly or the woman in the
red hat as you can see up there makes
the shot for me you know you’re more
likely bit of action out of the comments
of like this rather than something like
cool or nice you know and then there’s
hashtags hashtags this is perhaps the
most overused and misunderstood features
of Instagram a lot of photographers
proposal is the hashtags in the
compensation and then the time to just
draw under more lights but that’s not
right I like to think
as a pipeline and the rest in the world
so think about it like if you spot
hashtags there are five outlets that
someone can use to review your image if
you use 30 hashtags there’s 30 outlets
that someone can use every hashtag is
you need this one handling wonderland is
one that was started years ago and is
run by a page with the same name they
feature a bunch of people’s work from
the Pacific Northwest you know popular
places like who is Falls or pleasure or
something like that that page is full of
pictures from the NW and people get
their pictures with the hashtag so it’s
an outlet use it effectively if you keep
all these ideas into consideration and
most constantly the binders are protein
10:28 even 50 followers a day numbers
may not mean a lot to some people but it
translates into a larger audience and
more attention from other users but not
all the other users companies – huge
companies companies like Google REI Land
Rover Mazda McDonald’s – of even having
an outsourcing their photography –
Instagram accounts not only do they
trust these photographers to reduce
caffeine content but it’s a way for
to reach an audience with similar
interests let’s say the travel bag
companies such as Langley I make these
really cool canvas backpacks I’m not
advertising for the lump to seasonal as
an example but they make really cool
countess backpack so you can take on
hikes or about packing or camping and
say they want to get their word out
expended two years ago right so how do
they do that
well if I’m a photographer they find in
the spare Macau who boasts content like
this you know outdoors of adventure
style content and they realize that
their audience
the photographer’s audience is going to
have similar interest like if I’m a
hiker I’m probably gonna follow this
page and as I see that I’m back on it
you didn’t want the backpack to write so
companies use Instagram not only as a
way to get a wider audience but in a
very specific target audience in some
the old idea of incident is built on a
symbiotic relationship it’s essentially
a win-win for all the players in the
game users and companies alike see so
many people put their day jobs and start
working for companies like these to be
marketing and PR work where they
essentially get paid to travel take
pictures and just enjoy themselves and I
wouldn’t be possible without the recent
surge in social photography so back to
Buuren I mentioned earlier while the
number of professional photographers may
be declining
it’s just the way art works for
experiencing the new wave of
photographers those wave those
influenced by passion to adapt into the
motor trend right I’ve met so many of
these amazing people through this hat to
the Instagram community and I think I
have to say effort on them as they
follow me and I wouldn’t be here without
the constructive comments the criticism
the support and admin from other people
and this speech is kind of my way of
sharing that with you so thank you
