I’d like to ask something of you and
it’s to do with learning and you see
learning is what I see is one of the
most important things in the world I’m
not just saying that cuz it’s synthetic
so when you think about it it’s a
necessity in our society we is how we
interpret the world it’s how we expand
our knowledge is how and often the
ability to learn is how we do ourselves
or how you might do someone else in
terms of inferiority or superiority we
it expands our limits and or what we
feel is our limits and it allows us to
catch the world and take on the world
and so many more ways than we probably
come before and it is so it’s very
important to I think it’s a very
important tool to sort of be hungry for
it to be hungry for the ability to learn
and want to take on more and learn more
so what I’d like to ask you is has there
ever been a time in your life I mean
whatever age were you struggled with
learning subject or learning or to be
more specific a time when you found
learning was difficult for something
again that’s very normal and another
thing that was important thing and is
there ever anything you learned or you
were trying to learn that you found was
boring I’ve been engaging you know so it
wasn’t as TED talk but the you know that
for me is the killer nobility the fact
that you don’t even want to take on this
endeavor the fact that you think it’s
too much effort is too much effort or
it’s too much and a hassle or this just
it feels like a waste of time because
there’s nothing to grab your interests
you know and that is why we think would
be a problem and it was certainly a big
problem in my life but I’ve taken on a
belief that is very much influenced and
the whole of my life has made big
changes to myself it’s a certain thing
of learning is never boring but how it
is presented
and me you know learning the information
itself it’s not the informations fault
you know anything can be interesting you
know and say yeah it might be boring
hearing and some very gray lecturer and
sort of talk to you about quantum
physics or something but what if that
the same information is portrayed to you
in something that is vibrant or colorful
or made to entertain or made to be fun
or something to your taste you know
something that’s given to you
enthusiastically and you know there’s a
there’s examples of that going on today
like that red-hot musical that came out
and we think a year or two ago Hamilton
it’s got schools and pupils across the
board and America interested in American
history now and that they wouldn’t be
before because of the way they do it
they do it through treating it like a
genuine piece of art and a genuine piece
of story but some ways in which
information and learning can be
presented are not always the best for
our attention span or whatever you like
to call it you know believing in this it
may seem like a bit a bold statement but
believing in this and actually buying
into it is what has produced this and it
is the front cover of a comic strip you
see before you and you may think it’s a
very colorful and wacky very daft lots
of energy and that it looks like
something that’s made to entertain and
or made to be something fun to read in
your spare time that would be good if
that’s what you’re thinking because that
is what it’s supposed to come across as
it is in fact actually the front cover
to an educational comic all the material
in it is educational based the same
educational material that you would find
in school
it’s based on the curriculum but it is
portrayed it portrays the information it
communicates the information through fun
short comic stories that don’t try to be
anything else than comic stories but
they tell the information through their
dialogue and through the happenings and
through the story structure you know if
information if learning is information
then presentation is communication and
so the communication of information can
be done in more ways than just words on
the sheet or words in a book you know
that doesn’t really have any emotional
in there and so things like this that is
education you see for you the material
in it within the words that are linking
with the pictures it’s all information
that you might find on a school
worksheet you know this as well it’s an
English lesson but this what you see is
a comic what you see is a story what you
see is something that you think child
would want to do in this spare time or
another you’ve got life so this as well
you know it’s the same thing and tries
to come across with lot spend is trying
to grab your attention to every moment
trying to make you feel like you’re
having a worthwhile experience but the
material that is happening that is a
comic right there teaching children
about factor and multiple and prime
numbers but and that’s just the second
page you see there but it’s doing the
function through the form and these are
called Decker comics and they are they
come from a very important part of my
life as I was saying earlier and you see
school is a big area that comes to
learning you know we spend a lot of our
time we spend a lot of our early youth
school years and lover here early years
of our life in school trying to develop
a relationship learning trying to
understand the basic concepts of things
and you know we basically get a lot of
uh we learn a lot about how we see
ourselves depending on how good we are
learning and or how proud we are of
ourselves based on how proud of our
parents or other people are of how we’re
doing in school and I mean the sad thing
about suppose that it teaches and only
one way it teaches through words and
with the ability to listen and the
ability to write the ability to read you
know and if you’re good at that great
you will probably do well even if you’re
passable you’ll do well school and
people will encourage you you’ll get
words or whatever and you will feel good
about yourself and you’ll feel you can
do things you’ll feel you can take on
things and you’ll go out into the other
world feeling that you can take on
anything that you’re interested in and
you’ll probably have much you’re more
likely to have a hunger for learning and
you know the thing it doesn’t worry too
much work you think it but if you’re bad
and that ability is probably gonna be
the obviously you’re probably not gonna
have a hunger for learning you probably
gonna have quite a bad relationship of
learning
thinking that it’s boring thing thinking
that is something you don’t really want
to do and saying thing about some you
can do you’re going to feel very limited
and that’s that can be a tragedy because
there’s a lot of people that leave
school and have less on the past that
have not made the most of their life and
I was one of those people who wasn’t
going to home reading and listening
I found that I can I can read listen to
people it was very difficult to absorb
the information while I was reading and
you know I’d be reading the words that
returned to blur and or I just found
that nothing had gone in even though I
had taken in the works or listening with
the same I would listen and then I’d
find it difficult to keep up with the
teacher while the teacher was talking
and they would just fade out and I would
lose concentration and that made me do
bad at my school results made me think
it was bad at school made me think was
bad at work but beyond that maybe think
it was stupid
I gained a reputation from being stupid
among my pupils and such people said it
to my face teachers some teachers
thought would be a high-flyer because
all the evidence in the system that they
were they’ve been trained to think that
people’s are doing well at this you’re
doing a good job as a teacher I was
letting them down in every corner unless
it was something like art or drama so it
was even worse when it came to exams I
hated the exam periods it was
excruciating trying to absorb all the
information and have nothing go in and
feel that disappointment with yourself
again and and then just to get fairly
poor grades you know that might be very
lucky
I’m really trying with this by the way
but I’d be very lucky if I can scrape
with me and all from up paying very
little reward school be calibrated under
learning experience and learning was you
know an experience like one I wanted to
get away from learning whenever I could
how much of something I didn’t realize I
was burning like a computer game or like
a call me where I would be learning
information so when it came to my final
exams in high school here’s my model
studies revision I thought I do not want
to go through this pain again just maybe
scrape a pass you know it’s it’s not
worth it and doesn’t really matter the
way I feel so this was my resolution
this was life-changing if I’m going to
fail anyway I may as well enjoy
I mean but that is what I thought to
myself I just thought you know effort
you know because funnily enough the most
important part of that sentence was
enjoy I look to my enjoyment as my
resolution you know I felt like I had no
control over how well I did at this exam
but at the very least if I could and do
you know fayla my own terms and actually
enjoy the experience this time and not
be associated with all this negativity
it would be something at least so I knew
I was like making comics how I knew I
was like reading comics you know in
Dendy so I turned my revision of into
comic strips just one page
cutting off into chunks to make it a
story out of it color coding what was
information and leaving the rest is
character dialogue and these were fun to
make but they were even more fun to read
i weirdly found that I could now
remember the information with a visual
and the point of narrative that cemented
it in the mind in the same way you’ll
remember what happened in an episode of
Game of Thrones or the lyrics to a music
and you know a piece of music or a tune
so and thumbtacks you’re really
refreshing experience so I made more
comics so just by my own studies I
didn’t want to venture too far and I was
still trying very hard at the
conventional way with my other exams but
this was a nice relief and so I just
sort of did little things like this and
made little characters out them made it
as if I was genuinely making something
fun for myself you know focusing we
can’t comment before education as far as
I was concerned I was going to fail for
this but as I said before at least you
know I went out with a bang at least
them did it in a way that I felt proud
of myself for and I was expecting and
fully prepared to get that deep and it
was looming especially subject is were
these modern studies with all those
political systems to understand all that
academia to get my head round
funnily enough I got a name you know the
first day I’d ever go in an academic
exam
[Music]
you know so much you know so that one
way or another and that was you know we
and I tested different and you know how
was it working well we how successful
were on three factors and engagement
digestibility and clarity
that’s engagement how much they enjoyed
it digestibility how much they retain
the information and clarity how well
they understood information in this
format and in terms of engagement
without saying the kids love comic and a
lot of comic has done well so and you
know if I can find the stuff on anything
it’s how to make good cartoons so they
really liked it they really wanted to
see more and there’s lots of exclamation
marks lots of demanding instead of
homework even kids is it over sixteen
you know and
into that are never free well we tested
how long we can retain this information
we gave the kids a comic to read for
what we as many times or as few times as
you like but we’re gonna ask you
questions it’s up to you because you
read the comic once they remembered some
of the questions not many it gets read
three to four times in you know sort of
utilize that as a revision technique
they were remembering full marks for
nearly four months you know it worked as
a you know if as I said before if you
can remember something from a piece of
entertainment a comic works the same way
it just so happens more naturally and it
breaks down that motivational barrier
and these kids more they read it the
more information they retained and the
clarity we want to be taking the comics
away from the kids and two months down
the line a teacher asked his family six
children and what they’ve remembered
from the comics and they were
deliberately given call me back those
two months ago I thought that was based
on advanced higher biology and you know
and animal science tells and I knew that
was too advanced something that for them
but I wonder do they remember it through
the context of the comic strip and they
did they were remembering things what
what photosynthesis was what
chloroplasts were what and the whole
purpose of an animal and plant cells
were and nobody didn’t understand it in
the biology context but they understood
that in the context of the comic they
understood have you know the information
and where it was happening in the story
and so that was also very exciting so
and the teachers loved it too they
called a fantastic resource they
welcomed it they embraced it this is
something that they this is this one
maybe think it was something that was
not just a little gimmick that okay that
works it was actually something I was
getting responses like this was
something that they had been waiting for
or something that had made sense for a
long time but just hadn’t been used
enough or had me subscribed enough know
just simply the idea of using visuals
and good visuals no politically-correct
nicey-nicey visuals like whack
cartoony all go ahead visuals that
actually produces like it produces an
emotional reaction from the audience
that’s gonna produce engagement and
engagement and whatever subject matter
you want to give those kids so the
teachers got that which is wonderful so
it brings us back to that learning is
never boring but how its presented can
be that thing that you found boring and
in your past or whatever
was it really a case of the information
that is just not interesting enough or
was it more of a case of the way was
being given to you this wasn’t quite
working for you or didn’t find it a job
for you
I mean everything given to you in a way
that was associate with your personal
entertainment would have been different
you know we sometimes forget you know
words are very important they are
unveiling for some use them in all of
our senses in almost every walk of life
they are our ultimate communicating tool
but let’s not forget that our senses
came before words that we did not come
out of the womb with the ability to talk
we didn’t say hi to the doctor and we
didn’t have the ability to understand
what everyone says we have to learn that
as we go on it is a human-made skill
that we have to learn where as we learn
to communicate with the world and
interact with the world first through
our senses for a vision or touch or
sound or movement or taste these are key
things that we use and react much more
strongly to before I guess what I’m
saying the senses before skills skills
are one thing they’re important but our
senses come first you know even you’re
listening to me and I’m very much
you know without my words you wouldn’t
be understanding anything I’m giving you
words but for example you wouldn’t hear
my words in the first place if you can
hear my voice and to help you follow my
voice more and the words than what I’m
saying I’m using movement I’m using arm
gestures to help illustrate what I’m
saying
and I use intonation Xin my voice as
well and and different registers and
such i you know i i’ve got visuals on
the board and you can see me as well
that also helps to the whole experience
and i was just sort of reading
everything like this and didn’t make any
sort of emotional connection with you
and this is all i gave you it probably
winky as easy to listen to you see so
there is you know words are important
but senses are
and words on the card and it’s important
to remember that when over giving our
schoolchildren is worksheets and class
lessons and textbooks and instructions
to listen to and getting angry with them
cuz they’re not on the right page or
they’re looking at the window really
sometimes and you blame them frankly so
you know doesn’t know maybe it’s not
such an out of the blue or unthinkable
idea that’s something like a comic would
speak to the senses a bit more naturally
that would be more speak to the visual
appeal and it touches on that humor that
the desire for humor we have their
desires laugh or a desire to follow a
story in be engrossed in the story no
matter how short or and no matter how
simple you know or maybe just having
like for example a telephone drawing of
a dinosaur to make a huge difference in
how people understand something like
fact versus opinion you know and the
list goes on learning about history
learning about the time it just the idea
of a comic is just one way it’s one
alternative to learning and the school
system was never really built on the
open mindedness of learning to take in
all these different kinds of thinking it
was very much about the function of we
need more learners for the Industrial
Revolution we need more and scholars or
whatever is but worries were the tool
and unfortunately we’ve never really
grown the seed of what can be done
through the power of visuals but sound
moving through entertainment be covering
a movement you think of are engaged we
all the sports are dancing you know
there’s so much potential for this
ultimately thing to remember is that
soccer senses are older than words for
any entertainment and our love for
entertainment is older than our school
systems and you know although schools
change but fun or are yearning for fun
doesn’t change you know we’re always
going to have that desire and yes it is
great to get that satisfaction that
functional satisfaction when you do well
at your schoolwork or when you
practicode or when you do something
intellectual but it is also it you know
you can get there but you can get
through through a different way you
don’t have to get them through the same
as everyone else and you can go through
a way that speaks your personal language
more I mean entertainment is such a
great communicator you know far more
people in our school class will yet have
far more in common with a piece of
entertainment than they will with a math
lesson or how much they enjoy the worst
person at maths could have the same
amount in common as the top person at
maths in terms of their music tastes for
example so entertai is why entertaining
is such a big part of our society today
so be bold enough to think how can we
make this as fun as possible for our
children with or without the educational
element and because if you do that then
education will be fed through the
entertainment through the funnel of the
entertainment entertainment will
communicate the information and you know
what line is if these comics can give me
a great a you know the same grade as the
highest flyers in my class the people
who I always looked up to and thought I
would always be struggling behind on if
it could give me an a the same greatest
them and think of what else this kind of
approach could do thank you very much
[Applause]
[Music]

more information they retained and the
clarity we want to be taking the comics
away from the kids and two months down
the line a teacher asked his family six
children and what they’ve remembered
from the comics and they were
deliberately given call me back those
two months ago I thought that was based
on advanced higher biology and you know
and animal science tells and I knew that
was too advanced something that for them
but I wonder do they remember it through
the context of the comic strip and they
did they were remembering things what
what photosynthesis was what
chloroplasts were what and the whole
purpose of an animal and plant cells
were and nobody didn’t understand it in
the biology context but they understood
that in the context of the comic they
understood have you know the information
and where it was happening in the story
and so that was also very exciting so
and the teachers loved it too they
called a fantastic resource they
welcomed it they embraced it this is
something that they this is this one
maybe think it was something that was
not just a little gimmick that okay that
works it was actually something I was
getting responses like this was
something that they had been waiting for
or something that had made sense for a
long time but just hadn’t been used
enough or had me subscribed enough know
just simply the idea of using visuals
and good visuals no politically-correct
nicey-nicey visuals like whack
cartoony all go ahead visuals that
actually produces like it produces an
emotional reaction from the audience
that’s gonna produce engagement and
engagement and whatever subject matter
you want to give those kids so the
teachers got that which is wonderful so
it brings us back to that learning is
never boring but how its presented can
be that thing that you found boring and
in your past or whatever
was it really a case of the information
that is just not interesting enough or
was it more of a case of the way was
being given to you this wasn’t quite
working for you or didn’t find it a job
for you
I mean everything given to you in a way
that was associate with your personal
entertainment would have been different
you know we sometimes forget you know
words are very important they are
unveiling for some use them in all of
our senses in almost every walk of life
they are our ultimate communicating tool
but let’s not forget that our senses
came before words that we did not come
out of the womb with the ability to talk
we didn’t say hi to the doctor and we
didn’t have the ability to understand
what everyone says we have to learn that
as we go on it is a human-made skill
that we have to learn where as we learn
to communicate with the world and
interact with the world first through
our senses for a vision or touch or
sound or movement or taste these are key
things that we use and react much more
strongly to before I guess what I’m
saying the senses before skills skills
are one thing they’re important but our
senses come first you know even you’re
listening to me and I’m very much
you know without my words you wouldn’t
be understanding anything I’m giving you
words but for example you wouldn’t hear
my words in the first place if you can
hear my voice and to help you follow my
voice more and the words than what I’m
saying I’m using movement I’m using arm
gestures to help illustrate what I’m
saying
and I use intonation Xin my voice as
well and and different registers and
such i you know i i’ve got visuals on
the board and you can see me as well
that also helps to the whole experience
and i was just sort of reading
everything like this and didn’t make any
sort of emotional connection with you
and this is all i gave you it probably
winky as easy to listen to you see so
there is you know words are important
but senses are
and words on the card and it’s important
to remember that when over giving our
schoolchildren is worksheets and class
lessons and textbooks and instructions
to listen to and getting angry with them
cuz they’re not on the right page or
they’re looking at the window really
sometimes and you blame them frankly so
you know doesn’t know maybe it’s not
such an out of the blue or unthinkable
idea that’s something like a comic would
speak to the senses a bit more naturally
that would be more speak to the visual
appeal and it touches on that humor that
the desire for humor we have their
desires laugh or a desire to follow a
story in be engrossed in the story no
matter how short or and no matter how
simple you know or maybe just having
like for example a telephone drawing of
a dinosaur to make a huge difference in
how people understand something like
fact versus opinion you know and the
list goes on learning about history
learning about the time it just the idea
of a comic is just one way it’s one
alternative to learning and the school
system was never really built on the
open mindedness of learning to take in
all these different kinds of thinking it
was very much about the function of we
need more learners for the Industrial
Revolution we need more and scholars or
whatever is but worries were the tool
and unfortunately we’ve never really
grown the seed of what can be done
through the power of visuals but sound
moving through entertainment be covering
a movement you think of are engaged we
all the sports are dancing you know
there’s so much potential for this
ultimately thing to remember is that
soccer senses are older than words for
any entertainment and our love for
entertainment is older than our school
systems and you know although schools
change but fun or are yearning for fun
doesn’t change you know we’re always
going to have that desire and yes it is
great to get that satisfaction that
functional satisfaction when you do well
at your schoolwork or when you
practicode or when you do something
intellectual but it is also it you know
you can get there but you can get
through through a different way you
don’t have to get them through the same
as everyone else and you can go through
a way that speaks your personal language
more I mean entertainment is such a
great communicator you know far more
people in our school class will yet have
far more in common with a piece of
entertainment than they will with a math
lesson or how much they enjoy the worst
person at maths could have the same
amount in common as the top person at
maths in terms of their music tastes for
example so entertai is why entertaining
is such a big part of our society today
so be bold enough to think how can we
make this as fun as possible for our
children with or without the educational
element and because if you do that then
education will be fed through the
entertainment through the funnel of the
entertainment entertainment will
communicate the information and you know
what line is if these comics can give me
a great a you know the same grade as the
highest flyers in my class the people
who I always looked up to and thought I
would always be struggling behind on if
it could give me an a the same greatest
them and think of what else this kind of
approach could do thank you very much
